Now that, Cyclops, would save a lot of men, from a lot of trouble Xmas Grin

DandyHighwayman · 20/12/2014 09:18

No to a like button or an agree button, dear me, no!

This is a chat site. Chat. You know, exchanges of view, imparting of information, mulling over stuff, chewing the fat, having a squabble, hefting bosoms, dreadful puns, silly japes.

Mehitabel6 · 20/12/2014 09:18

I would love a 'like' button. You are often getting a hard time on a thread and yet the silent majority agree but dare not post to say so!

DandyHighwayman · 20/12/2014 09:20

Hurhur at men/edit

meditrina · 20/12/2014 09:20

I don't think there's any need for a 30 sec edit button, when the function is already there via the 'preview' button.

And before mentioning a 'like' button, could I suggest reading the many, many long threads in site issues and elsewhere explaining why there isn't one and the strength of feeling against it?

If you want a site with different functionality that what is MN, then there are plenty of others.

DandyHighwayman · 20/12/2014 09:24

Erm, silent majority, not daring to post, that's an odd assertion. How do you know?

Roussette · 20/12/2014 09:38

No no no to a 'like' function - I know a niche forum that has that and it ends up like a cliquey popularity contest nothing to do with the actual post, just arse licking, which is why I don't post on there now!

Cornettoninja · 20/12/2014 09:56

I'd like a short edit window- not so much for errors but for when I think 'and another thing....' So I don't end up posting loads of times and looking a bit too keen Grin

I like digital spy's format, they let you have an edit window and it notes when a post has been edited. Well it used to anyway.

They also have a quote function which I'd like here. They've limited it so you can only quote one post so you don't end up with massive posts containing half the thread over and over.

No to the 'like' though, its just a bit wanky tbh.

skylark2 · 20/12/2014 10:10

I'm startled it doesn't have a real edit facility. Compared to other forums it's like being back in 1995. These days even the "set it up yourself" freebie forums have editing as standard.

usualsockpuppet3333333 · 20/12/2014 10:14

We need those little thumbs up or down thingies..

MiddleAgedandConfused · 20/12/2014 11:34

YANBU

TheOnlyOliviaMumsnet · 20/12/2014 11:35

No need for an edit button.
There is a PREVIEW post button
It's basically the same thing Xmas Grin

Selvsikker · 20/12/2014 11:36

I wish. I say three minutes though

Selvsikker · 20/12/2014 11:37

I wish they'd just allow edits though. MN say it would be abused and that is their excuse for not allowing it but on another site I visit it is not abused because people know that the other posters would spot it.

Selvsikker · 20/12/2014 11:40

Maybe predominantly male sites abuse it but on the other fora I visit that are predominantly female it's definitely not abused. I do a 'tidy up' every now and then on the other site which means that there's not an endless trail of my details left on line. Being able to tidy up (long long after the threadsa have sunk) means I can keep the same name!

On this site I have to change every few days because I have no control to remove posts even years after they're read. THey're there forever so it is quite scary!

Mehitabel6 · 20/12/2014 18:33

In theory of course we should use the preview button, but in practice I don't and am not going to.

skylark2 · 20/12/2014 18:40

I post on multiple other sites. They all have edit facilities. Why would it be abused? With this modern forum software you've been able to get since, oh, 2000 or so, you get a little note that the post was edited, who by (poster or mod) and when.

I do sometimes get the feeling that the people who run this site don't actually look at any other part of the internet except for Facebook. No, Olivia, preview is not the same thing as post editing - you would expect to have that as well. Facility-wise, this place is a bit of a joke, to be honest.

fatlazymummy · 20/12/2014 19:39

I would like to have an edit function and a quote function personally. There're just standard functions on forums nowadays.

fatlazymummy · 20/12/2014 19:42

How is the preview function the same as an edit function? They are 2 different things. Which may explain why some forums have both.

CassieBearRawr · 20/12/2014 19:50

@Usual

"MN don't do up to date.

[time warp]"

Oh yes, I agree. A quote function would be handy too. As would avatars. And the ability to post images (no - GIFS!) I expect we'll get such things in about a decades time the way things go Grin

I've long thought mumsnet a very strange little corner of the internet. But every time I've ever mentioned such things I've been met with a barrage of "and that's exactly why we like it" with much harrumphing and bosom hoiking. It'll never change!

ChippingInLovesChristmasLights · 21/12/2014 00:26

Anyone that doesn't like it, doesn't have to use it As you say, plenty of sites out there that have those functions if that's what you like. Many of us like it how it is and thankfully MNHQ agree. So no, it probably won't change. Great :)

usualsuspect333 · 21/12/2014 08:29

You don't have to like every aspect of the site to use it.

It does need a timed edit function. But it will.never get one..

southeastastra · 21/12/2014 10:05

yes we should go to netmums usual Grin Shock

OP posts:
BuzzardBirdRoast · 21/12/2014 10:11

I think we should have a 'delete our own thread' option. After a few too many sherries one can occassionally start something that they regret bitterly the next day...

Roussette · 21/12/2014 10:25

I'm used to the site like this and only use the 'preview' function if my post is long or I quote someone else and want their post in italics (which sometimes doesn't work if you copy and paste for some reason).

I quite like the fact that it's just plain on here. There is another forum I'm on (mostly women) and honestly the crap underneath their posts, with quotes and tickers for weight loss, pregnancy, holidays, christmas etc... really irritating. I like the plainness of MN and it does mean you can skim read through threads quickly.
