To find ILs sticking "the" in front of DS's name a bit annoying?

Ever since DS was born my younger BIL decided to use "the" in front of his name when speaking about him. So rather than saying "How's Jack* doing?" He'd ask "How's the Jack doing?"

MIL has picked this up and we've just received our Christmas card addressed to me, DH and the Jack.

This is really starting to irritate me for some reason. AIBU?

*His name isn't Jack but it's similar, trying not to completely out myself in case MIL is a secret mumsnetter.

I think it's quite cute, it like he is a little king, 'The Jack' sounds like he is even more important.

My SIL calls my DH (her brother) 'Uncle John', always, even when the kids are in bed. That's winds me up, just use his regular name, he is 35, and it's 10pm!! But I wouldn't ever say anything. Wink

My brother and sil refer to each other as mummy and daddy even when The Baby is in bed.

'Would like a cup of tea, mummy?'
'Yes daddy, that would be nice'.

It creeps me the fuck out.

Having said that, I don't refer to my nieces or nephews by their given names, they all have ridiculous pet names so am probably just as bad.

YANBU. "The" infront of a name just sound weird. It doesn't even make sense!

When DS was a baby/toddler, DM would refer to him as "Baby Bob" or "Grandson Bob" (name is not actually Bob btw) and I found it pretty irritating. Especially on crappy FB. "Going out for lunch today with Grandson Bob and Daughter MrsKringle and her Partner MrKringle" - not everyone needs a title to explain their relationship to you DM!

DS' great-grandad has a nickname for him which isn't anything to do with his name but it's lovely and endearing. "The" or titles I don't find endearing at all.

At least they partly get his name right. I've got relatives who can't remember DHs (German) name. But rather than check, they just choose something German sounding. We've had

Dear frosty and Helmut
To frosty and Heinrich
Hi frosty and Hans

His name doesn't even start with H!

But yeah in your case OP I think they are just being affectionate. Embrace the love. Merry Christmas

frosty, that made me laugh. My husband is also a forriner from Forrinland, and my mother invented a name for him. She thought it was his name but it isn't. No such name exists. It begins with a T. The letter T doesn't appear in my husband's actual name.

As for the subject of this thread, I'm waiting for a thread along the lines of "My DS is named Thomas. Everyone calls him Thomas. When my MIL calls him Thomas, it really winds me up. AIBU? She's obviously calling him by his actual name just to annoy me."

(The last is not directed at the OP but rather at the prevailing culture on MN that is relentlessly negative toward MILs.)

My DM can't remember my husband's name. Conversations go:

"how's erm...erm......MrCollector?"

She calls the twins This One and That One, which drives me bonkers.

"This One needs changing"
"That One likes X"

still, not as annoying as putting 'The' in front of their names!

NobodyLivesHere · 14/12/2014 05:52

My sister is still 'the baby'....she's 24. Lol. She was nameless for so long it sort of stuck.

TheFantasticMrsFox · 14/12/2014 05:58

My DP's have a nickname for DS. He is their only GC and they are devoted to him so I struggle to remain sanguine about it. After a day in their presence though I feel an irrational desire to do damage to something, and have to keep reminding myself that in the big scheme of things it could be so much worse

MaryBerrysBum · 14/12/2014 07:28

He is also their only thefantastic so will keep schtum and go for similar deep breaths!

I do generally like my ILs Elk, it just this one thing and two or three other things. I know what you mean though, possibly would have had different responses if I'd said it was my own DM...
