To ask WHY there are little girls with bare legs and ankle socks in this weather ?

Are you the owner of one of these amazingly resilient (possibly frozen) little girls, sporting bare legs and ankle socks in Mary Jane type shoes in this weather?

Can someone PLEASE explain this mystery to me, because I just cannot get my head round it.

As a parent to a school age dd and toddler dd, I couldn't contemplate bare legs in this weather for either of them.

Are these parents BU? Or am I??

This isn't new.

I grew up in Florida and kids wanted to wear shorts to school even at 1 or 2 C. They finally banned primary and middle schoolers from wearing shorts in exceptionally cold weather.

Artandco · 11/12/2014 23:06

Both my ds's have shorts all year around as school uniform. Trousers aren't an option. Same with most school locally. The girls uniform is usually pinafore dresses (compulsory), and boys shorts with long socks ( compulsory)

BackwardFlip · 11/12/2014 23:09

Splash in puddles??? My DD hasn't wanted to do that since nursery. They have Tarmac and a massive field. The field is out of bounds when it's muddy. So they never get wet and mucky. It's not really that cold at the moment anyway. Once it snows or rains heavily they wear wellies or snow boots to school which they can only wear if they want to got outside when it snows.

RueDeWakening · 11/12/2014 23:09

DD (year 3) actively prefers wearing short skirts with knee high socks, which she then rolls down to her ankles Hmm

She has perfectly nice warm tights available, or trousers, but generally just won't wear them.

I don't get it.

DS1 (year R) on the other hand, will be lucky if he finishes the term with any trousers to wear - if he takes any more knees out of them, he'll be going in shorts whether he likes it or not :o

BlahBlahYeahYeah · 11/12/2014 23:09

Thanks Chippingin, but I shall continue to have an opinion if that's ok Smile

Dd is 8 and went to school in skirt and ankle socks and Mary Jane shoes last week when it was cold. She has ASD and nothing I can say will dissuade her. I may put long socks and gloves in her bag but she won't use them at my behest.
She doesn't like school trousers either or jogging bottoms for outdoor PE.

x2boys · 11/12/2014 23:11

Hmm I had a toddler who just refused to wear hats ,gloves and scarves yes I bought them but he kept pulling them off he has autism and can't tolerate them he is now four and a half and I don't bother with them any more I got him a big thick coat so I know he is warm .

BackwardFlip · 11/12/2014 23:11

Like I said the kids you see walking get hot from, urm, walking. Exercise.

BlahBlahYeahYeah · 11/12/2014 23:11

What's wrong with splashing on puddles ? Blush

even I do it with dd sometimes and I'm 30

When it snowed a couple of years ago, DS2 still wore shorts, just agreed to wear waterproof leggings over the top!

Mummytogoldie · 11/12/2014 23:14

My dd refuses to wear tights fir school but is 10 so I suppose it's her decision. I work in a school and tbh in this weatger tights are sometimes colder as dc fall over in the playground in puddles and soak them so are either Sat in wet tights or changed into or shorts. Legs can be brushed off and warmed up, its hard to dry hundreds of girls tights in a dinner hour x

BlahBlahYeahYeah · 11/12/2014 23:14

Hmm. Possiby backwards.

I do sympathise with all the owners of Refusers Grin .. Havnt encountered that in my DDs yet but I might yet need a disclaimer sign to hold above their heads in the future Wink

Pe shorts not or shorts : /

Backtobedlam · 11/12/2014 23:16

Children really don't seem to feel the cold. Ds has to wear shorts and long socks all year round (usually round his ankles) but the last few weeks he's been refusing to wear a jumper as he says he gets sooo hot he feels sick. Apparently they are only allowed out at playtime if they wear a coat, so his solution is t.shirt and shorts to go to school in!

AngelsWithSilverWings · 11/12/2014 23:19

Because I got fed up with the daily arguments and the sulking and crying all the way to school on the days I made my 6 year old wear tights.

She hates tights , finds them uncomfortable and would refuse to wear trousers too.

It annoys me to see her in ankle socks in this weather but at least she goes to school happy and no longer tells me that I'm the worse mum ever.

teenagetantrums · 11/12/2014 23:23

dont worry as soon as they are teenagers they will be swanning around without a coat and in short sleeves all year, my DD us 18 cant remember the last time she wore a coat, to much hassle to take to college apparently.

ItsaboatJack · 11/12/2014 23:24

and it is bloody artic here, all the time grin - and I promise you I'm the same, and if I was comparing to me and dd1 I'd totally agree with you. But. dd2 will strip off as fast as I can wrap her up.

wigglesrock · 11/12/2014 23:27

I've 3 daughters, two of them are like little furnaces. Their school is roasting, they're always coming out with jumpers off, coats round their waists. If it's raining heavily they don't get out in the playground and if they are out, they're running around so don't feel cold. They don't feel comfy in tights all day and I'm sure they'd have the wit to tell me if they were freezing in their socks and skirts. The youngest one wears joggers to nursery but no coat.

BramwellLovesSnowflakeBiscuits · 11/12/2014 23:36

because DD ripped her last pair of tights this morning, we break up tomorrow and they are actually knee high socks but she keeps rolling them down, I'd put her in different colour tights or trousers but the school rules are very specific, I got pulled into the office last week because DD's skirt is meant to be knee length but was an inch and a half too long, who the fuck even complains about that?

maz210 · 11/12/2014 23:38

My daughter used to struggle to put tights on when she was younger so I always sent her in socks on pe days, mainly to help the teachers sanity!

Perhaps this might be one of the reasons why you're seeing girls in socks?

lougle · 11/12/2014 23:41

DD2 (7): Ask her! While you're there, ask her why she comes out of class with no cardigan or coat on. She says 'I'm a hot-bod'. I'm shivering & she's fine.

DD3 (5): Sensory issues. She pulls the tights on but can't stand the gusset of even flat-seam tights.

Pantone363 · 11/12/2014 23:43

DD wears ankle socks with bare legs.

She ripped the knees out of every pair of tights and now prefers socks because they're easier to run in.

Both her and DS throw their coats at me as soon as they are out of the school gates and walk home in their shirts.

Either of them has ever complained of being cold. My other DD would never take her cost off, she gets freezing!

Stripyhoglets · 11/12/2014 23:44

My dd doesn't like wearing tights, so will wear socks if she wants to wear a skirt in winter - I hate it, but it's easier than trying to get her to wear tights. She will sometimes wear leggings instead, but it depends on her mood!

sanfairyanne · 11/12/2014 23:46

cos they are well hard innit

its boiling hot in schools. tights are itchy. they want to wear ankle socks. shrug.
