To ask WHY there are little girls with bare legs and ankle socks in this weather ?

Are you the owner of one of these amazingly resilient (possibly frozen) little girls, sporting bare legs and ankle socks in Mary Jane type shoes in this weather?

Can someone PLEASE explain this mystery to me, because I just cannot get my head round it.

As a parent to a school age dd and toddler dd, I couldn't contemplate bare legs in this weather for either of them.

Are these parents BU? Or am I??

I don't think school kids feel the cd they run around too much. Mine have always hated tights.

timtam23 · 11/12/2014 22:51

My DS2, in reception, is still in shorts & ankle socks for school. He refuses point blank to wear trousers and until the weather turned cold a couple of weeks ago, he also refused to wear any sort of school jumper/tank top over his school tshirt - he does now have a tank top! He is the same at home though, often wears a fleece rather than a coat and still wants short sleeved tshirts (although he has now agreed to wear joggers at the weekends, rather than shorts).

MissHJ · 11/12/2014 22:52

Some kids don't feel the cold much. I have two cousins who are 7 and 8 and they walk round in hardly anything. Never wear socks unless forced and get naked as soon as it comes to bedtime! I don't know how they do it and I asked the oldest If he was not cold, he just looked at me blankly and said no lol. So maybe the mother has a battle getting her child to wear tights or trousers. You should not judge unless you know them and know why they are in socks.

TheBogQueen · 11/12/2014 22:53

DP wore school shorts throughout Scottish winters he assures me.

ChristmasJumperWearer · 11/12/2014 22:54

FWIW, it is always boiling hot inside our school. The DCs always discard their jumpers and cardigans on setting foot inside. So perhaps another reason why?

BackwardFlip · 11/12/2014 22:54

My DD hates wearing tights because the classrooms are very warm with central heating. I let her, because I get it, because I also hated wearing tights in the winter because I also felt uncomfortable and hot in a heated room. She wears knee length socks though and is allowed trousers so will now also wear those.

ItsaboatJack · 11/12/2014 22:54

We were all out last weekend at the Christmas market on Southbank. My dh and dd2 (4yrs old) were walking round in t-shirts carrying their coats, while me and dd1, and pretty much everyone else we saw, were in done up coats, scarves, gloves etc. Some people just seem to have an inner furnace.

BlahBlahYeahYeah · 11/12/2014 22:54

MissH - I think I'm more genuinely mystified than judging anyone in particular!

Oh and our primary school also doesn't allow trousers for girls. Skirts/pinafores only

Idontseeanysontarans · 11/12/2014 22:56

Once a week yes I own one of these for the simple reason that on swimming day they are asked to wear socks rather than tights for ease of dressing and DD prefers to wear a skirt on swimming days.
She hasn't yet frozen to death.
I'm also the mildly frustrated owner of a 3 year old who carries her damn hat in her hand and pulls her hood down every 12 seconds.
Bad mother twice over...Wink

DancingDinosaur · 11/12/2014 22:56

My ds insists on wearing shorts to school. Quite a lot of the boys do. I find it a bit weird myself but its not worth the battle. He obviously prefers it or he wouldn't insist on doing it every day!

Bowlersarm · 11/12/2014 22:56

At my dses junior school, shorts are the uniform all year round. Long socks, but they are normally bunched round their ankles as soon as they even get to school.

BackwardFlip · 11/12/2014 22:57

My DD has to to wear her Mary Jane type shoes as it's her uniform. What else can she wear? Def not boots they would not be allowed.

BlahBlahYeahYeah · 11/12/2014 22:58

But I've had loads of reasons on here that I hadn't considered while pondering this on my drive home from school Grin

I have another tights/trousers refuser. I have bigger battles to fight. And at least she currently wears a coat - give it a few years and she will be on your "AIBU that secondary school kids don't wear coats?" thread. She would go round naked if I let her.

ItsaboatJack · 11/12/2014 22:59

and get naked as soon as it comes to bedtime! - yy my dd2 also strips nearly naked as soon as she gets home from school. I only have the thermostat set to 20.

BackwardFlip · 11/12/2014 22:59

We walk to and from school so my DD and DS get warmed up from the physical exercise.

Theas18 · 11/12/2014 23:00

Pah! Not bothered as long as it's the child's choice. DS wore shorts pretty much all year round for much Of primary. It's no difference.

BlahBlahYeahYeah · 11/12/2014 23:02

Wow I am genuinely shocked at the primaries that won't allow little girls wear trousers. Shock

What the hell is that all about ???

And the person who made the very good point about Mary Janes being the only school uniform shoes available, it's true ! Why are little girls expected to wear Mary Janes in this awful weather ?? And then they send them out to play in all weathers. Hardly practical footwear is it, for little girls who want to jump and splash in puddles Hmm

FamiliesShareGerms · 11/12/2014 23:02

DD 4 refuses to wear tights. Sometimes wears long socks, prefers short ones. Often teamed with a summer dress... Hmm

I dress her in a really thick coat, hat and gloves but still feel like hanging a sign round her neck saying that she isn't a waif really!!

ItsaboatJack · 11/12/2014 23:03

Also, where abouts in the country are you? While I'm a massive wuss when it comes to the cold, it's not exactly Arctic yet. And quite possibly those children you see are going from home to car to classroom fairly quickly with minimal time actually spent outside.

chancer2014 · 11/12/2014 23:04

No coats here most of the time. The schools don t have lockers and kids hate lugging all their gear around. Plus, we're in the North East and I suspect they're genetically preprogrammed to wear as few clothes as possible.

SaucyJack · 11/12/2014 23:05

I judge.

BlahBlahYeahYeah · 11/12/2014 23:05

I'm in Manchester. These are children I've spotted walking home with their adults, so they're definitely walking not being driven.

Yep, loads of reasons :) so that's one less thing for you to worry about!
