...what is the big deal about Benedict Cumberbatch ? I genuinely don't understand. He seems to be everywhere recently and his engagement garnered a lot of publicity, as well as envy.

Is he a particularly gifted actor ? I'm vaguely aware of some Sherlock Holmes connection. To be blunt he isn't exactly blessed with matinee idol looks.

Thought he was fantastic in The Imitation Game, not been bothered about him before I saw this tho.

He was phenomenal in The Imitation Game, and I do love Martin in Cabin Pressure as well - last two episodes over Christmas. He also makes a very good Horace Rumpole on Radio 4, and I'm looking forward to seeing his Richard III in the next set of The Hollow Crown films.

I think he is a very good actor. He's not conventionally hot by any means, but his personality and talent have us all tricked.

For ages, I've loved him as an actor, and as a public figure. I think he's very talented, intelligent, and he doesn't take himself too seriously.

I don't get George Clooney or Brad Pitt or other similar types who look like perfect physical specimens. I mean, I can see that they are handsome or beautiful but I don't 'fancy' them (insofar as you can fancy a celebrity you don't know). Men I like, even in real life, look a bit quirky or imperfect. I don't expect everyone to go agree with my preference but neither do I think people should be required to defend something that's so innate. And there's some unnecessary stuff on here about BC's perceived 'ugliness' which would be (rightly ) shouted down if it was about a woman.

Stating the obvious, but attraction is such an individual thing- otherwise we'd all fancy the same people. I don't fancy George Clooney at all, but plenty of people seem to.

I wouldn't say BC is conventionally attractive at all, but many people (including me) find him very sexy. One doesn't have to be good-looking to have sex appeal.
