to ask about nose piercings??

My daughter, 15, had her nose pierced yesterday ( without my knowledge or consent).
It is pierced with a stud with an arrow shape on the end ( the end inside her nostril).
At the moment it looks clean and she says it is not sore unless she knocks it.
It was pierced with a nose gun. she was not told how to clean or look after it or how long until she can change the stud. The bar is quite long and pokes the inside of her nose.
How do we even take it out? Does the arrow have to slide through the hole? I know nothing!

I wouldn't be a horrid parent, but I loathe piercings and tattoos. Most schools don't permit piercings for hygienic reasons.

EhricJinglingHisBallsOnHigh · 10/12/2014 06:37

Thing is erica, once we have kids they are actually separate people from us! I know right! They aren't actually extensions of their parents. That means, when they start growing up and exerting their new found agency in their teens they will start doing stuff to and with their bodies that we might not like. But you know, they are their bodies and not ours! That's why we try to guide them into safe and healthy choices but ultimately the choices are not ours. The law helps, such as no tattoos under 18, but there is no law covering body piercing. It's really important to let your kids make their own choices and mistakes.
Not that any of my teenage piercings were mistakes. The ones I grew out of are now barely visible and the ones I didn't I still have at 34.

WalkWithTheLonelyOnes · 10/12/2014 08:05

Most schools don't permit piercings for hygienic reasons. Yeah that's because kids tend to do a lot of roughhousing and there's a chance they'll get ripped out.

Why would you come onto a thread about piercings just to say how disgusting they are? Why even open the thread in the first place? Confused Hmm

solidussnake · 10/12/2014 09:42

There are laws covering body piercings. Surface & Genital cannot be done under the age of 18, nipple 16 & all the rest I think is 13.
Erica, my school didn't permit them full stop unless you were of a certain religion. i got my nose done and kicked off and screamed bloody murder why were there girls who were allowed nostril piercings but others weren't? to this day I can't get my head round it - surely it should be a blanket ban or let everyone have piercings?
piercings are not disgsuting. I've had my lips, nipples, chest, neck, septum, nostril (x3), helix, lobex2 and a stretched ear. And I have tattoos. and I work in law.

kissinggiraffe · 10/12/2014 10:22

eric I never asked for personal opinions on piercings. How rude of you to say they are common (and whatever else you said, I can't be bothered to read back). You do know you can just scroll past a post if you have nothing relevant to say??

We are fully aware that most schools don't allow nose piercings, if dd had asked me if she could have it done before she did it I would have told her to wait until she's finished school. But as it's there now I am willing to let her keep it until someone at school notices. She knows she will have to remove it then.

ehric that is so true, she is so much her own person it scares me a little bit although I can't help but feel a little bit of pride that I raised a strong, independent young lady who is not afraid to make decisions!

solidussnake, I work as a body piercer and we have absolutely no official laws regarding age - it's a massive bone of contention and the majority of us are actually pushing for legislation.

That said, you're correct in that no REPUTABLE studio will perform genital piercings on under 18s. I have no idea where you got the 'no surface piercings on under 18s' from.

Nipples are generally on people 18 and over too. Everything else is 16 with Government-approved ID, or 14 with parental consent (and the parent must be present to sign the consent form and witness the piercing). These are my personal practice rules and generally a given in most studios. I'm very strict on ID.

The only law we're subject to is the Female Genital Mutilation Act, as genital piercings are not for medical benefit and any potential mistakes made when performing the piercing are considered to be mutilation.

solidussnake · 11/12/2014 10:04

i stand corrected, thank you. Most places I went to wouldn't pierce under 16 eve with parental consent. So I went to less reputable places and got dodgy piercings. I would never, ever do that again.

AnotherGirlsParadise · 11/12/2014 10:24

I would absolutely love to see industry-wide legislation for piercing, I really would. I've known of 14 year olds getting genital piercings because they've either not been ID'd, or the studio just wasn't bothered - the majority of us are self employed, and sadly money talks in some situations and ethics go out the window.

Andrewofgg · 11/12/2014 10:59

A law is only as good as the enforcement thereof! There are enough under 18 tattoos around to remind us of that.

AnotherGirlsParadise if I had had a daughter who wanted a bog standard earlobes job I would have insisted on someone like you with a needle and not some amateur with a gun. But at what age would you do it? 14 seems a bit high for that!

spamanderson · 11/12/2014 11:18

ericaequites ha ha you'd bloody love me then! I am pretty heavily pierced and I am absolutely not 'common'!

OP, if the school have a problem with it, there are ways you can hide it. I wouldn't recommend it be removed until it's had its 12 weeks healing time etc anyway, it can be bad if there's any infection there etc. you can get teeny tiny studded ones and if you choose the right colour they're pretty hard to see. I have titanium in all of mine but only have a 1mm ball on the end of my nose piercing and so many people have known me for years and not noticed it. I pierced my lip when I was at school... My parents made me take it out, it was awful, I looked like I'd been punched in the mouth for several days with the swelling. Least she didn't go and pierce it herself like it did :)

spamanderson · 11/12/2014 11:26

Yep solidsussnake and anothergirls I thought there were rules on it until I had a natter with my piercer. I have a lot of piercings, ears first with parents permission, then the hideable ones started! My eldest is 7 and wants her ears pierced. I know she could have them done now but I've told both of them that they can have them done when a reputable piercer of my choice says that they will do them. Apparently that age seems to be ages 10-13 depending on piercer. My friend is a piercer in a reputable studio across the road from a less than reputable one. People are constantly coming to her to get her opinion on what's been done and getting her to fix them :/ and getting the customers coming in expecting her to happily pierce their babies ears :/

So I just recently got my nose pierced about 2 weeks ago. So just a quick question... is it weird that when I push the outside of my nose piercing inward, it starts to go inside my nose.... if I don’t touch it then it doesn’t sink in by itself but I’m just wondering if my hole is thicker than it should be or if this is normal

🧟‍♂️

LeighaJ · 12/06/2018 11:32

It just means the outside bit is likely too small, but if you're really concerned then call the place you had it pierced. Hopefully it was done by a professional piercer and not some half-trained teen with a piercing gun. 🙈

Aussiegirl88 · 18/11/2022 11:15

Silly Silly to pierce a nose with a gun. Any reputable body piercer would have used a needle and Either a Pig tale stud or Dog leg stud. I would recommend changing to either one of those immediately or have another body piercer replace it as she will forever be accidentally knocking it out and it will take ages to heal. You could even go a very small, dainty Sleeper type ring in about a 6mm so it's a snug fit. But change immediately!!!!!!!!!
