to ask about nose piercings??

My daughter, 15, had her nose pierced yesterday ( without my knowledge or consent).
It is pierced with a stud with an arrow shape on the end ( the end inside her nostril).
At the moment it looks clean and she says it is not sore unless she knocks it.
It was pierced with a nose gun. she was not told how to clean or look after it or how long until she can change the stud. The bar is quite long and pokes the inside of her nose.
How do we even take it out? Does the arrow have to slide through the hole? I know nothing!

My first nose piercing was a gun. I didn't know any better. Within a month I had a lovely lump called a granuloma on my nose, it wouldn't heal and I had no choice but to remove the stud.
It took about twelve months to heal, and lots of work with heat compresses to get rid of the lump. Finally at the end of it I managed a repiercing, this time with a needle. It healed perfectly and has been in for about fifteen years now.

I've had many piercings and the gun one is the only one to ever cause me grief.

dd wanted her nose pierced at 16, I suggested the first day of the school summer hols to have it done so it had chance to heal enough for her to then to use an 'invisible' stud when autumn term started. We live way out of town so I asked a relative who lives there to check out the piercing studios and local grapevine and let me know which was the best. I'd read a lot online and the consensus was a needle was the best way to do a nose piercing. Relative confirmed the best studio definitely used a needle so off we went. dd was sat in the back room with people being pierced and tattooed, agreed the location for the nose stud when the piercer produced a gun. I queried it and said surely a needle was better and he produced the biggest hollow needle I've ever seen and asked if that was what dd wanted. Of course she said no, but she still wanted a nose stud and said she wanted the gun, so she had it done. It was a longer stud than an earring with a sparkly stone outside, a thicker shaft than an earring and it had a spear-shaped point that went through, although it was not shaped like the OP's dd's stud. If I can find it tomorrow, I'll photograph it. I still don't know why he would have told someone who walked in and asked that they only ever used needles for nose piercings then when we turned up he insisted guns were what they'd always used for the last 20 or so years. Confused

We kept it clean, there was never any infection, but a keloid appeared and was there for 2 years, it looked like the one in this image i45.tinypic.com/29vxqpi.jpg I tried all sorts of different bathing solutions and metal studs, then one day the keloid disappeared and her piercing has been fine ever since, 4 years and counting.

I hope you get your dd's nose sorted OP and that the reputable piercer can remove that thing for her with minimum pain and hopefully use something invisible for her, poor kid Flowers

You take it out the same way it went in. It's going to hurt, especially since it's going to be swollen from being done so recently. Sad It sounds like you're taking her to a reputable place, they might be able to give her some numbing gel on it before they pull it out.

I had a nose piercing but it was the corkscrew kind, and it was done with a needle. I can't believe the place she went to used a gun, that's not even that great for ears. Nose earrings are a bit of a pain, and boogers collect and stick on them. The nose just isn't a clean place, it's entire purpose is to catch harmful bacteria to stop it from getting in your body. You really have to clean it religiously. Mine was healing just fine, but I switched earrings to match my outfit and it got infected a few days later so I took it out. It hurt like hell, I was in tears pulling it out.

Poor kid. Take her out for lunch afterwards or something. Pulling the earring out will be lesson enough not to impulsively do stupid things.

Ericaequites · 08/12/2014 02:16

Cut the thing out, and ground her. Piercings are unsanitary, inappropriate, and common.

Bulbasaur · 08/12/2014 02:19

Ericaequites Cranky old lady talk about the "yoofs of today" aside, you can't cut it out. Metal cutters are big and bulky, using them to cut the piercing causes more risk of an even bigger injury than simply pulling it out.

sashh · 08/12/2014 06:35

Everything anothergirl said

bulbasor You don't need to put the metal cutters inside the nostril - you can clip from the outside and then blow your nose (experiment with straight stud that didn't fit)

kissinggiraffe · 08/12/2014 06:37

wow ericaequites I hope you don't have children. If you do, I hope they never make mistakes! I think the removal of that stud will 'teach her a lesson' better than a grounding would.....

AnotherGirlsParadise · 08/12/2014 07:40

I feel for the poor girl - having that pulled out will definitely be the best lesson!

Like PPs have said, the Studex system is just another type of ear piercing gun. It works a little like a stapler. The other guns are made by Caflon and have a 'pull back and bang' type mechanism. Neither should be used on cartilage, and quite frankly the 'piercer' (who is now very conveniently ignoring your messages!) is talking out of their arse.

Having piercings done anywhere like The Clothes Show is just asking for trouble, but in all fairness a 15 year old isn't likely to know that. I'm glad you're taking her to somewhere with a much better reputation Smile

Ericaequites Keep your attitude to yourself. This lady came on here for advice as a responsible parent, not for your views on body modification.

Dreadedsunnyday · 08/12/2014 07:57

OP you sound like a really lovely mum.

May I suggest that your daughter takes some painkillers about half an hour before you go to get this taken out?

I had my nose pierced about 4 years ago (I'm 47) at Selfridges which was the most reputable place you could possibly get! It hurt like a bastard and I managed to pull it out in my sleep that night...was almost impossible to get it back in and it was bleeding and very painful but I was damned if I was going to give it up that easily and somehow got it back in. I never take it out now, ever. The advice was that it takes 9 months to fully heal and the first time I wanted to change the stud to go back and they would do it.

Hope it goes well today for your daughter.

solidussnake · 08/12/2014 09:38

OP you are really lovely!
lets talk about piercings.
A piercing should NEVER be done with a gun. Ever. You cannot clean a gun as if you stuck it in the autoclave (sterilization device like a furnace) it would melt the plastic. It can be wiped down but it cannot be cleaned properly. Also, a gun pushes the skin to the side and this can cause infections in itself. It is very rare any infection as long as she cleans it 3 times a day for two weeks, then once a day after that for a couple of weeks.
also erica I have piercings and I have tattoos. I work in Law. try again.

Tsoukalosy · 08/12/2014 17:23

How did today go OP? Did they get it out trouble free?

Wotsitsareafterme · 08/12/2014 17:36

Nose studs you can't just pop in and out are so much better. I've had a ball with a smaller ball on the inside in for 9 years and it's not been infected with that stud ever. I would have to take it out with jewellery pliers but I don't plan to Grin

kissinggiraffe · 08/12/2014 17:38

We couldn't get it taken out today because the piercer local to us who has a good rep and who I feel safe to use is closed on mondays!
We really wanted to get it sorted today but one more day won't hurt.....
I am happy to say that for now at least, the nose/pierced area looks clean and healthy so even though it was done in the wrong way we seem to be infection freeSmile

bulbasor You don't need to put the metal cutters inside the nostril - you can clip from the outside and then blow your nose (experiment with straight stud that didn't fit)

Yes, I assumed that would be the case. You still have to pull the earring up enough to get into the cutters which will be tricky in and of itself if the nostril is still swollen, and put a moderate amount of pressure onto the clippers right near the nostril. It's just a risk that if you slip it could cause a bigger injury.

I've never had to have an earring cut though, just logically in my head it seems risky. There might be special jewelry cutters piercing parlors have.

If you can cut it off though, that'd be great! I hope they can for OP's daughter. :)

KatieKaye · 09/12/2014 07:18

Hope today goes okay

WalkWithTheLonelyOnes · 09/12/2014 11:10

How did today go OP?

kali110 · 09/12/2014 11:38

your poor daughter! My eyes watered just looking at that picture!
Although the gun hurt more than the needle on my nose for me, it healed quicker and problemless!
Can't believe they did that to your daughter still.

Eric you would think i'm very common then with all my piercings! ( not that i care though, as you don't sound that nice).

My ironlung i had to give up with those!i ended up with one of those stuck up my nose!Grin i'v got a small labret through my nose now with sparkly gem.

kissinggiraffe · 09/12/2014 12:51

ahhh the torture stud is out! The piercer we took her to was brilliant.
They had never seen anything like it and didn't want to try to pull it out, said that would probably have caused no end of damage.
They used a tool to snip the stud from the outside of the nose (it was obviously not great quality because it cut very easily) then just pulled it through.
They gave it a good clean and put in a new clear stud, I'm still not sure she'll get away with wearing it at school but I agreed to let her try but if it gets spotted she knows it has to be removed.
I feel so relieved they got it out without hurting her.
Thanks for everyones advice here, much appreciated Smile

Oh thank goodness its out OP. Poor girl! Hope she can relax now. Well done for being so rational about it too. Xmas Smile

AnotherGirlsParadise · 09/12/2014 13:06

That's great news! And I'm glad it's not just me who's never seen anything like it!

blanklook · 09/12/2014 16:22

Fabulous news, I do hope school don't spot the clear one and she can keep her piercing. Flowers

ravenAK · 09/12/2014 16:38

Phew! Glad it's out Smile.

Chillyegg · 09/12/2014 16:42

I've had my nose pierced since I was 16 and had that type of stud first. Um personally I regretted that move because the end was a lot wider it hurt considerably to try and take it out. I removed it and changed the stud to a nose ring after the stud got knocked out of my nose by a very rude lady who barged past me with a mass of clothes in debenhams. I worked there at the time and my boss had to let me run down the road to the piercing shop to get it sorted because blood was everywhere. I'm not sure on how long the healing process is however if just go to another piercing shop and ask a)what the best healing process is and how to clean it
b) if there's a better stud (you can get skin coloured studs)
And then I'd go to her original piercer and ask why they're piercing a 15 year old without asking id? Most piercer a I know are rather strict...I'm sure you had to be 16 to get a facial piercing. But it might be different where you are

kali110 · 09/12/2014 21:28

Glad it's out and it didn't hurt!

Bulbasaur · 09/12/2014 23:36

Oh good!! Glad it went ok, and even better than expected!

I didn't know you could cut earring like that. I learned something new today. :)
