to think that UK shops should follow Australia's lead and ban on Grand Theft Auto 5

I have never understood why Grand Theft Auto has been acceptable as a main stream game with the amount of violence against women.

Isn't it about time British shops banned it too?

The prostitutes do add a nice touch of humour. In one of the early games, I was pursuing my target on foot, and had to take him down with my hand. Unfortunately, the punch I threw missed and hit a prostitute who was just walking and ignoring us. She immediately started a fist fight with me, screaming "You're dead now, boy. I'm a dominatrix".

JackSkellington · 05/12/2014 12:33

are there any tough women criminals, or cops?! do they ever do the killing of the men etc?!

Apart from the ones LongDistanceLove mentioned, in GTA Online you can choose a female character.

JackSkellington · 05/12/2014 12:35

I like Resident Evil solid, but the Tyrant still puts the fear in me!

purpleglowspider · 05/12/2014 13:36

Oh please! The game is specifically for adults only. How about parents grow a pair of responsibilities and not let their kids play it. I have played GTA and so do my other friends but we are grown adults and we know we cannot copy what we see in the game. I am so sick of this ban this ban the other bollocks. It's nanny getting out of control. What next ban Game of Thrones? (Don't you dare by the way I love that program)

If you don't like the game don't buy it just don't spoil it for the rest of us.

TimelyNameChangey · 05/12/2014 13:40

Purple how about society grows a pair.

BoneyBackJefferson · 05/12/2014 19:09

Timely

You know what happened the last time "society" grew "a pair" the big internet providers blocked sites.

The net result?

Not a reduction in porn but a group of people who wanted to watch their favorite shows from the US a couple of months early no longer could.

Big win there (sarcasm)

TimelyNameChangey · 05/12/2014 19:29

Oh what an absolute DISASTER Boney!! I am shaking with the horror of that.

Not.

BoneyBackJefferson · 05/12/2014 19:33

The horror is timely that it had no effect on anything that it was supposed to. If you believe for a second that banning these games will have an affect you are deluded.

LongDistanceLove · 06/12/2014 18:25

timely, do yo believe in censorship? China does too.

RaisingMen · 06/12/2014 18:40

timely it is obvious you have never played the game. You're entitled to an opinion of course, but at least research your subject properly to ensure it is an educated opinion.

As many others have already said - there is no reason to kill prostitutes unless the player chooses to. The game doesn't make you, you don't get any further forward, it is the players choice. The player can kill whoever they want, or nobody. Your argument is flawed, and shouting and stamping your feet about violence and sex doesn't make it any less flawed.

happyhev1 · 06/12/2014 20:16

Genuine question, I get that lots of different people get murdered in GTA, but do any men get raped / paid for sex and then murdered or does that only happen to female characters? Also surely it's worse that murdering and raping women is a player choice in GTA rather than an integral part of the game. Many on here are saying they choose not to engage in that part of the game, but what of those who do, why do they? Isn't it possible then, that those who make a conscious choice to have sex and then murder a female character are doing so because that is a fantasy they have. And if it's a fantasy they have is it not possible that acting it out in a game might fuel the fantasy?
I do get the fears over censorship, perhaps those adults who like this game should push for it being a criminal offence to supply or allow a child under 18 to play an 18 rated game.

veronaswalls · 06/12/2014 21:12

Have you played the game?

TaliZorahVasNormandy · 06/12/2014 21:37

Happy, many people also choose to watch films about rape and murder or torture porn etc.

You cant censor things because someone might have a fantasy about it.

windchime · 06/12/2014 21:51

Is violence directed at men ok, then, OP?

Babycham1979 · 08/12/2014 17:04

Ban this, ban that, yep; that will solve everything. Funnily enough, the censorious puritans only want to ban the things they're not interested in. What next? 50 Shades of Grey? Mills and Boon?

How about allowing people the choice to make informed decisions of their own, and asking parents to be responsible adults when it comes to what media their children access?

It always makes me laugh when hear the same tired old tropes about games (or video nasties or rock and roll or penny dreadfuls etc etc) leading to violent behaviour and societal breakdown. Nobody ever seems to consider the fact that the crime rate has been consistently falling across the western world for decades, nor that the first half of the Twentieth Century was characterised by unprecedented levels of violence and brutality.

Won't someone think of the children!?
