When did bright blue become a Christmas colour??

I have seen quite a few houses decorated for Christmas now (already??) but they all seem to have loads of blue lights, their houses look like they've left the fridge door open! AIBU to think it just doesn't look festive?

I think it's supposed to be cool and wintery but I agree it looks like the ambulances have just turned up. Too harsh and cheap looking. Don't like the ice white LED's either.
Lots of warm white or lots of multi coloured for my money.

Having said that I am looking forward to all the early and late dogs walks in the dark again and seeing all the lights on.

CupidStuntSurvivor · 30/11/2014 20:45

I've literally just seen a pic of someone's premature tree decked in blue with bright blue LED lights. It upsets me Sad. Christmas should be lovely warm colours, not icy.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 30/11/2014 21:19

We have the mishmash of all colours on our tree, including twinkling multi coloured lights, I really don't like themed treees and white lights, but I do love blue ones in the mix and seeing blue ones on outdoor bushes, trees, houses. Especially mixed with green.

CobbOnn · 30/11/2014 21:26

Eek. We've got a set of blue lights winding up the bannister, had them up a month now- since decorating the house for baby's first birthday. They look lovely with the blueish grey walls and white bannister. (DH bought them last year when I was too nackered with newborn to be arsed about christmas tree. It was horrendous - I like a red and gold tree).

ClawHandsIfYouBelieveInFreaks · 30/11/2014 21:28

They're cheap OP. That's why there'r loads of them about. Absolutely tack-o-rama mind you. Awful things should be banned!

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 30/11/2014 21:31

I haven't put my blue icicles up in the window for a couple of years but I'm going to do so this year. Pretty blue twinkles, lovely.

wtffgs · 30/11/2014 21:35

YANBU - I hate blue lights . It's not festive it's for the emergency services.

As for putting decorations up in it's still fucking November Hmm .......

HedgehogsDontBite · 30/11/2014 21:36

I think Mary has been doing blue for Christmas for at least 700 years.

BlinkAndMiss · 30/11/2014 21:36

Urgh I can't stand the blue lights, unfortunately my whole street is lit up with them - outside and in the windows. It just doesn't look festive, it looks cold. And tacky.

I've always wondered why people had blue lights but Clawhands has just answered that one. Makes perfect sense! Last year our town decorated the main high street with blue flashing lights, it was awful and loads of people complained. This year they're gold and they look fab :).

fatlazymummy · 30/11/2014 21:38

Lots of blue lights round here. It makes no difference to me, people can decide for themselves what colours are 'christmasssy'.
My son has a little white tree in his room with blue led lights and silver decs. He loves it ,and dislikes gold and red decorations, or anything too traditional.

Poolomoomon · 30/11/2014 21:47

Think it's the Frozen thing. I agree it looks like shit. White lights or nothing for me Wink.

MrsMook · 30/11/2014 21:47

I find the royal blue ones dingy which defeats the purpose of lights at the darkest time of the year. A creamy white or a mix for me.

MrsSippy · 30/11/2014 21:53

Oh I'm glad it's not just me that doesn't like the blue ones, they look cold and unwelcoming. People put so many of them up, why stick one set up when you can hang them in every window and from every possible overhang outside too...

Well, red only became a 'Christmas colour' after Coca cola's hugely successful ads of the 1930s which depicted Santa in the coke colours of red and white.

Blue has a longer heritage at Christmas, being associated with the Virgin Mary and Santa precursors such as Odin, who wore a long blue cloak.

Just putting it out there

MargotThreadbetter · 30/11/2014 22:19

YANBU. I really dislike blue lights, they're cold, cheap looking, and should be reserved for the emergency services only!
Each to their own though Wink

Muchtoomuchtodo · 30/11/2014 22:22

I'm not a fan of the blue ones either.

Our lights are all white. Indoors and out. The rest of the tree is a mish-mash!

The outdoor lights are up, but won't be turned on until tomorrow. The indoor decorations will go up in a couple of weeks time.

ClawHandsIfYouBelieveInFreaks · 30/11/2014 22:25

Mouse between the two pics...I think the winner is clear...

The horror!

When did bright blue become a Christmas colour??
Oldraver · 30/11/2014 22:47

Someone down the road from me has multi coloured lights that include blue and they look really nice. Not kken on bright blue on its own

Our council have got new lights this year and they are all blue and white Sad

nic013 · 30/11/2014 22:51

I think any colour is fine for lights as long as they go with the colours in your room.

As for black trees, I'll be nabbing one in the January sale for my Halloween tree Grin.

smokinggnu · 30/11/2014 22:52

Do you mean those crappy/ tacky light/ icicles people put all round their roof line? They fill me with rage. They're right up there with 'little prince (ss) on board' stickers on my rage scale.

ghostyslovesheep · 30/11/2014 22:58

Our council put alternate Blue then white Christmas trees in light form round the lampposts in the park - I like it because the blue ones look like Darleks

SistersOfPercy · 30/11/2014 23:00

Not keen on blue at all. My town has some interesting parts shall we say, every time I drive through I think there has been a riot, then I realise someone has blue flashing lights Blush

mausmaus · 30/11/2014 23:00

it always makes me think there is a major incident down the road when I see those blue lights outside houses.

moosemama · 30/11/2014 23:04

Blue led lights are a migraine trigger for me, particularly if they flash.

Our lovely neighbours put up lights across the front of both houses and along the hedge-line on both sides every year. It's so kind of them and they always say they do it for my dcs, but a couple of years ago they changed their mutlicoloured lights to bright blue randomly flashing leds and now I have to try and pull the curtains around behind my christmas tree so that I can't see them, to stop me getting a migraine almost every night. I can't say anything to them though, as they're so lovely I would hate to hurt their feelings. Sad

We've just trawled all over the place to find a set of old fashioned, non-led bulb lights for our tree, as even the non-blue leds hurt my eyes. Found some in a local garden centre for a small fortune, only to receive an email from Tesco Direct when I got home advertising the same ones for a fiver. Hmm So, I've bought a couple of spare boxes, because it seems very likely there won't be anything but led lights available next year.
