I'm having frozen mash for Christmas dinner and one of those Iceland ice cream bottles

I hate doing mash, unnecessary labour for something dull.

I'm also doing the Roast potatoes in the Actifry.

AND

I'm having a chocolate ice cream bottle for pudding. With Heston Ponce Pies.

I'm not remotely unreasonable.

Nothing is unreasonable if it results in chocolate ice cream with toffee bits in a novelty shape.

An Actifry is a magic air fryer that makes ?ovely crisp food with a teeny blob of oil.

I luffs it.

Frozen mash is ace.

christmas dinner with only one kind of potato is unacceptable.

I prefer Frozen to the ready made stuff.

I I do make it at home I use a ricer

I never need a ricer for mashing potatoes. I just channel my inner rage.

velvetspoon · 29/11/2014 19:48

Frozen mash is amazeballs.

I bought a massive bag of it from Iceland a few weeks ago for £1 (half price). Cooks with minimal effort and actually much cheaper and easier than buying potatoes and peeling etc. The bf adds grated cheese to it which makes it even nicer. We have it all the time on top of shepherds pie.

We prob won't have it on Xmas Day but only because there isn't room on the plate for 2 sorts of potatoes plus the usual mountain of veg. Would be having a frozen Aldi turducken but the bf wants a turkey, so (provided he cooks it) I'll let him have what he wants :)

Bit tempted by the ice cream bottle, esp as I hate all 'proper' Xmas desserts!

Mumraathenoisylion · 29/11/2014 19:55

Have you tried Nigella's chocolate prune cake, velvet? it's still quite christmassy but mostly tastes of chocolate (and you can't taste the prunes but they are, well, helpful).

Chandon · 29/11/2014 19:59

Frozen mash is cheap, yes, and easy , yes, sadly it tastes rubbish

I have a phobia about prunes (we used to get them weekly for school dinners for 4 years) but if you honestly cant taste them I might consider it as an alternative dessert :)

Or we may just end up having a Viennetta. Or one of the DCs selection boxes!

Mrsgrumble · 29/11/2014 20:22

Ooooh parsnips in the actifry.. Totally doing that too.

Mumraathenoisylion · 29/11/2014 20:48

You honestly can't taste them but prunes...for 4 years?? did you report them?

NeedABumChangeNotANameChange · 29/11/2014 20:48

YABVVU!
Obviously never had decent mash if you think it is boring.
Obviously can't cook if you think making mash if hassle.
Who has mash for Xmas dinner anyways?
Potatoes done in an actifry are not roast potatoes.
Don't even get me started on the Iceland junk- for Xmas- that's a bit sad.

Seriously you may as well get a frozen roast dinner Grin

Honeydragon · 29/11/2014 21:52

I cook all year.

Screw some beardy blokes birthday. I'm having Frozen mash and novelty ice cream.

I'm doing the red cabbage though because I like mine the best

And mashed potato is boring.

Interesting mash isn't obviously, but if I decide to do poncy mash than mass disagreement will break out over which kind. Then I will be doing seventeen different mashed potatoes and will cry.

We're having a frozen Peking duck for our dinner. I shall nuke it, hack it to bits and fling it on the table with a steamer full of pancakes.

HaroldLloyd · 29/11/2014 21:59

One year my mother did roast, mashed new and boiled potato.

There were 18 forms of vegetable on the plate. It was like fracking to get down to the turkey.

TheLostPelvicFloorOfPoosh · 29/11/2014 22:01

See, I was picturing Frozen Mash to be a novelty Olaf shaped potato product, complete with a wee carrot for a nose.

I'm a little disappointed.

HaroldLloyd · 29/11/2014 22:01

Genius idea though!

Honeydragon · 29/11/2014 22:06

The dc are getting mash snow men now.

Ice cream scoop, carrot ends and peas should do it. With a cabbage or streaky bacon scarf.

Hurrah! Grin

OOAOML · 29/11/2014 22:27

I have no idea what we will have for Christmas dinner and an stunned at how organised you all soundWink

PearlieQueen · 29/11/2014 22:41

I am serving mine in a giant Aunt Bessie's Yorkshire Pudding! (saves on washing up) Grin

TheMaw · 29/11/2014 23:15

YANBU and the Heston mince pies are the absolute tits, I'm on my third box already. Looked for the pine ones for fucking MONTHS and they're not doing them this year. Glad to hear they're horrible, actually, or I would've always wondered.

Tinks42 · 29/11/2014 23:32

Im hugely traditional where even sunday dinners are concerned... its a dying tradition and no i wont do frozen mash... my xmas dinner will be fresh!

HicDraconis · 29/11/2014 23:59

DisgracetotheY we would be too except the In Laws are coming. Apparently it's not a proper Christmas dinner without turkey and trimmings. Can I come to yours instead?

CelibacyCakeAndElevatorMuzac · 30/11/2014 00:14

I'm doing my first ever Christmas dinner. Am crapping myself. I won't be doing anything extravagant. I plan to ply them with Proscecco and hope they're too pissed to care about my meal Wink

I love the list of ingredients up there, properly snorted at that. Pious Food Police on a HD thread, worrevva next!?

saoirse31 · 30/11/2014 00:54

Can't believe (in suitably judgy way) how many people don't cook fresh Christmas dinner.. All this frozen Iceland stuff sounds sad... as for frozen mashed potato.
. words fail.... will calm down by calculating what size turkey for 12, checking brandy for brandy butter making on Xmas eve to go with home made xmas pudding... and wondering where Xmas cake toppings are for home made cake...

mmmm food is a big part of our Christmas. .. mustn't forget making stuffing on Xmas eve.. now I'm hungry..
