AIBU for laughing at this statement and should I take back the Dyson I've bought her for Christmas ?

I'd have laughed too. Then corrected her. She's two, they look around at their lives at that age and nothing else exists.

Hurr1cane · 29/11/2014 09:48

I think it's funny. If a 2 year old thought all daddies stayed home because their dad was the SAHP there wouldn't be this much horror and outrage. Nor would it if she thought all mummy's worked in offices and all daddy's worked in shops just because that's what hers do.

It's funny. SAHP is a valid choice for either parent and it can be a very valuable role.

I find it offensive that people are offended by my choice to be honest. although I'm not a SAHP by choice, I worked for the first 5 years of DSs life and I worked hard, but now I have to care for him full time and that's a valid job too.

If DS thought all mummy's stayed at home I would laugh.

anothernumberone · 29/11/2014 09:48

Well I am a WoHM my dd2 recently explained to her 9 year old sister that I didn't get paid to work because only daddies do. She is 6. I was completely bemused as to how she could have come to that conclusion.

WD41 · 29/11/2014 09:53

It's got nothing to do with judging sahms OP, I was a sahm when DD was 2

You asked whether you were AIBU to laugh

I've had similar, I don't drive and DD once said to me "mummies don't drive, only daddies drive" - I didn't laugh, I told her that lots of mummies drive and reminded her of the ones we know. Laughing would have just reinforced it.

Pico2 · 29/11/2014 09:54

From about 2, we have explained to DD that there are only 2 things that can't be done by both men and women - weeing standing up and having a baby in their tummy. Everything else is possible for men and women. DD seems to have taken that message on board. I do wonder whether I have forgotten anything from that list.

We are having a harder time convincing DD that you don't have to go to university to meet your partner. She has been known to suggest to adults that they go to university to meet their OH and then they can get married and have a baby.

Hurr1cane · 29/11/2014 09:55

Pico, you can wee standing up if you have a shewee Wink

ispentitwithyou · 29/11/2014 10:00

OP, I was about to post in support of you and to tell people to lighten up, but your subsequent posts lead me to believe you are being goady and trying to wind people up.....either that or you are using it as an opening to discuss / justify bring a SAHM

I'll tell you from experience,do what is right for your family, and don't feel the need to justify it to anyone...but at the same time don't be too smug either Smile

Pico2 · 29/11/2014 10:03

Hurr1cane - I have a Shewee, but I thought it might complicate potty training.

NickiFury · 29/11/2014 10:08

Ds is very much into Lego. There's a Lego police set that has a woman criminal on it complete with stripy jumper!

Ds expressed surprise that women could be burglars as he thought only men would do that kind of horrible thing Grin.

I quite enjoyed explaining that women can do exactly the same as men including be criminal masterminds.

Waltonswatcher · 29/11/2014 10:12

No ispent I am not being deliberately goady, apologies if it sounds so .
I'm trying to respond to show that I feel sad that if we can't giggle at this statement from a toddler , then too many of us are actually limiting women not advancing them . Some of my responses are light hearted because the post was light hearted.

OP posts:
OhFrabjousDay · 29/11/2014 10:20

It's not sad that OPs dd said this, she is only two and is reflecting what she sees around her, but I'm not sure why it's funny? My dc have said similar and I've said, yes, well that's what I do and some other people do, but other mummies work and other daddies look after their children.

Why is it funny OP?

Hurr1cane · 29/11/2014 10:22

Ah, I make DS sit down wee to save my floors

jellybeans · 29/11/2014 10:27

At that age it is nothing to worry about. My 5 YO DS tells me he is going to be a SAHD while his wife works! I am a SAHM! They see plenty around them as they get older. Better to have a sense of humour about it.

One thing is though that we can never expect. Total equality when almost every toy advert is very sexist even my son says 'that advert is sexist' if there is one with only girls and dolls and boys with cars. Even toy animals only have girls in wtf! Seems hypocritical to expect kids to grow up to take on more roles whilst they are exposed to this sexist crap.

PunkrockerGirl · 29/11/2014 10:32

I would have laughed. She's 2 ffs. What joyless lives some people lead.

You were brave to post this OP, the professionally offended are out in force today.

ispentitwithyou · 29/11/2014 10:37

But serious question OP...do you feel the need to justify your choice to be a SAHM? It sounds that way or that's the vibe I'm getting...

I used to feel like this but don't care anymore....someone on here was saying that we don't deserve to use the nhs as we don't contribute.

I just smile now.

ispentitwithyou · 29/11/2014 10:39

Btw I think its funny, she will soon see that it is not the case as she grows, children just see their immediate world as everyone's reality

aprilanne · 29/11/2014 10:59

she is just a baby .and if you a SAHM.then thats what she will think .i was always a sahm .so the boys seen there father go to work and me at home .no problem in my eyes .it might be a bit old fashioned but my husband is alway,s saying to our son,s.mind you will have a wife and children to keep one day .don,t get the negative comments .and no they kiddies dyson,s are the best ever ,

Sleepingbunnies · 29/11/2014 11:02

Because DP is a SAHD (during the day, does night work too) my 5 yr old thinks all daddies should stay home and mummies need to 'put on their heels and go to work' ;)

ispentitwithyou · 29/11/2014 11:02
Confused
ilovesooty · 29/11/2014 11:02

you will have a wife and children to keep one day
Seriously?

ispentitwithyou · 29/11/2014 11:03

X post I love sooty!

aprilanne · 29/11/2014 11:10

yes seriously i did say he was a bit old fashioned .only 48 .but my mum used to say he should have been born in victorian times

paperlace · 29/11/2014 11:16

I made my comment on first page before knowing she was two ie who cares is she was even older - wow people need to get a fecking grip on here!

There are no need for sad faces, concern and horror over these kind of comments from kids - it's a great opportunity for discussion and debate and learnings.

I am a FT working mother/woman, a feminist and someone who has a sense of proportion.

NeedsAsockamnesty · 29/11/2014 11:20

My two year olds mind is blown beyond comprehension that his nanny who is also a mummy (her child comes to work with her) is at work when he sees her.

He finds it mind boggling that I leave to "go work" but she arrives to "go work"
