To think you can't just trundle along at any old speed you fancy...

I fully expect to get flamed for this because I know I'm a tad over the top about this but it's my pet hate so here goes.

If say be gentle but I know this is the wrong place for that Wink

I drive a lot. Every day I drive on a road that's technically a country road as there are fields either side but it's more than wide enough and not too windy. This road is followed by two straight roads. These are all national speed limit roads.

This is comfortably attainable with a few corners on the country road where 50 is a better speed. Obviously various weathers call for different speeds. I was behind a double decker bus doing 50 down there today.

The last few days I have been stuck behind people doing 35-40. Today the lady flashed at me when I finally get chance to overtake.

They way I see it is if you are driving so slow on the roads either
A) you are unaware of the speed limit/unable to follow basic road signs and therefore shouldn't be driving
B) do not feel comfortable driving at an appropriate limit for the road and therefore shouldn't be driving.

I know it's a limit not a target but you fail your driving test if you 'fail to progress' so they shouldn't be driving like this.

It's the principle that they don't care about anyone's time frame or how they affect other people. They just trundle along deciding what speed they want to go at and not giving a fuck.

We all have bad days where we mess up roundabouts and misjudge but Jesus Christ, if you can't drive at 60 in a straight line...

This drives me bonkers ! I used to drive a country road to work and the amount of times I've been stuck behind someone doing 30 is ridiculous . The thing that worries me is , they're doing 30 in front of you , making you do 30 , but if someone comes round a corner at 50 and can't slow down in time it's you that will get bumped , and they'll quite happily plod along doing their nice little 30mph drive - having just caused an accident Angry

Going too slow is dangerous too .

Jjuice · 28/11/2014 21:11

I drove over a pass across the moors at weekend Nsl clear vision as no shrubbery or houses.....30 miles @20mph behind a wagon. Sorry that isnt quite correct he slowed to 5mph for the bends and sped upto 60 on the only long straight bit I could have overtaken.
There was a huge queue behind him whichhe must have seen but didn't stop at the wagon stops. There were a couple wagons in front of it that vanished rapidly.
The air in my car was blue!

mollypup · 28/11/2014 21:11

I hate this too, along with:

People who pootle along at 25mph - COME ON.
People who pootle along at 25mph and still brake at speed cameras - ARGH.
People driving slower in the middle lane than the inside lane of the motorway - WHAT ARE YOU DOING.

I don't often get road rage but goodness, do these people not have places to be?! Angry

OTheHugeManatee · 28/11/2014 21:11

YANBU. Nothing worse than those idiots who do 40 everywhere, including in 30 zones.

I'd have to see the road in question before deciding if you ABU or not Op. If this happens to you a lot I'd think you possibly might be driving too fast for the road. If not often then you're probably right. :-)
It only takes one bend at too much speed on a country road to wipe out a walker or horse rider. So personally, on any country road, I'm always thinking about how safely I could stop around the coming corners.
It takes a very long distance before the odd 10 mph more or less has a real impact on your journey. On a stress awareness course years ago they gave us all the chapter and verse and suggested that it doesn't really matter that much on the scale of things, but that not getting wound up about stuff like this on the road is much better for your health and makes you safer.
Just a thought.

dalekanium · 28/11/2014 21:17

I especially hate the ones who are scared of the dark, and drive at 30 mph on a clear dry straight road and brake whenever anything comes the other way.

If you can't drive in the dark, get lessons, or plan your life so you don't have to.

HesterShaw · 28/11/2014 21:21

YANBU. People who are not confident enough to go more than 40mph, or who brake when they see a car coming towards them, should not be behind the wheel.

I know it is risk taking that causes the accidents, but people often take risks because of the incompetence of other drivers.

And yes, if someone sees a mighty queue behind them, isn't it some kind of HINT that the polite thing would be to pull over and let them past, like tractors do.

HesterShaw · 28/11/2014 21:21

Oh look, X posts with dalek.

TallulahTwinkletoes · 28/11/2014 21:22

No amici. It happens all conditions even when my lights aren't on.

I often get stuck behind the same people too so I know they know the road.

Yabu. I am a confident driver and absolutely do not dawdle.

But my fil scares the hell out of me the way he drives around the country roads where he lives. Ok the speed limit might be 50 but there are blind bends, dips and turns. He's been driving on them for about 55 years (never moved out of the village he was born in) and has got complacent.

If someone is being impatient and up my arse, I pull in and let them overtake. Then I re-join the traffic and usually join them at the next junction/traffic lights.

Comito · 28/11/2014 21:24

Oh yes, and Highways Agency traffic cars are NOT police. You do NOT need to slam on your brakes when you see them wombling up the inside lane of the motorway! Use your eyes, FGS!

HesterShaw · 28/11/2014 21:25

Oh yes the people who slam on their brakes when they see a speed camera, even if they are within the speed limit. It's not a "must be seen to slow down camera."

Comito, that reminds me of the Michael McIntyre sketch: You have no jurisdiction here! :o

dirkdiggler1 · 28/11/2014 21:33

I'm with you OP. So many morons out there flashing their lights after being overtaken perfectly legitimately and safely and lets not get started on the twats who try and block overtakes. I swear some people must think overtaking is illegal or something. My answer is to drive a high performance car, drop a couple of cogs and pass them before they know what hit em.

Lomega · 28/11/2014 21:35

Haha Tallulah i know. It's one of my fave 'angry' tracks.

littlepeas · 28/11/2014 21:41

Around 80% of my driving is on NSL roads that I am very familiar with. Somebody has to be doing under 40 before I think about overtaking - it used to really bother me, but I have tried to chill out about it. The drivers that really bug me are the ones who want to do 80 on winding country lanes - I get overtaken all the time, despite driving at the speed limit.

MrsMarcJacobs · 28/11/2014 21:49

I don't know where you live but I hardly ever encounter people driving under the speed limit or sticking to it, for that matter. The world needs more slow drivers (and people that aren't using their phones 24/7) so I think YABU.

dirkdiggler1 · 28/11/2014 21:51

It takes a very long distance before the odd 10 mph more or less has a real impact on your journey

Maybe, but the odd 50 or 60 mph certainly does!

Mintyy · 28/11/2014 21:58

I drive mainly in London so I rarely hit 30! Here the main hazard is people stepping out into the road infront of you. You have to be on the toes 100% of the time and it makes you hyper alert and mindful.

Nishky · 28/11/2014 21:59

Just get up earlier. Then these people will not have such an impact on you

sliceofsoup · 28/11/2014 21:59

Yeah the worst is the people who hold you up on a NSL road driving at 40, and then break the speed limit by continuing at 40 through a 30mph village.

Gets right on my wick that one. Happens all the time in a village near me.

HesterShaw · 28/11/2014 22:44

Just get up earlier. Then these people will not have such an impact on you

What a silly thing to post. How will having got up earlier make any difference to the speed you're being forced to drive at in the evening?

Comito · 28/11/2014 22:56

Mintyy yy, driving in central London really does sharpen the senses. You have to be hyper aware.

beavington · 28/11/2014 23:11

I haven't RTFT because Im too eager to add FUCK YESSSSSSS I HATE THIS!! It takes 30 minutes for me to drive to work in the very early hours but if i go later in the day it takes 40/45 minutes despite good weather, nice wide and straight road. Why the hell should i have to accommodate slow bastards who are incapable of driving at the APPROPRIATE speed and too arrogant to pull over at one of the many suitable laybys. There are so many people who drive this and it angers me so much.

Oh and i think that a driver who is going too slow and frustrating other drivers to the point of reckless decision making are partly at fault when these accidents occurr.

I can actually feel my blood pressure rising now.
