To think that £20 is ok for two sandwiches?

And chips and wine?

I've met a friend today for lunch and she almost argued that the pub we had found was expensive and we should leave and go somewhere else.

I pointed out you would be hard pressed to find somewhere else serving sandwiches for less....this was a cosy pub with an open fire and fairy lights up!! I didn't want to go somewhere else!

She kept saying £5 for a sandwich!!

I kept adding I don't think that's bad you get chips/ salad or soup too not just a sandwich.

The wine was £5 for a large.

We are in similar positions financially,it was her idea to go for lunch,AIBU?

What a scabby cow!

CakeAndWineAreAFoodGroup · 28/11/2014 18:22

I would be tempted to send her a text now saying that the wine was on me but she still owed me the £5 for the sandwich.

ChristmasSparkle · 28/11/2014 18:37

£5 for a wine is extortionate, not normal at all here. You can get a large glass for approx £3.
So on that count it does sound like an expensive place to have lunch. How do you know what her financial situation is like at the moment? So what if she earns the same as you?
She might have expenses that you're not aware of.

Tobyjugg · 28/11/2014 18:47

Given all you got, £10 a head seems very reasonable to me.

Frozenchipsareawful · 28/11/2014 18:47

Our local does a lunch club, selected food such as a sarnie and a drink for just under £8! What you paid was bog standard prices really. Going out for food isnt that cheap any more, but if you want a change or a treat from staying home you just have to pay up. It was nice of you to pay for her!

Kiffykaffycoffee · 28/11/2014 19:05

But it's not £20 for 2 sandwiches, it's £10 for 2 sandwiches and £10 for wine, chips and salad. Seems very average to me. If you'd said, £20 for 2 packaged sandwiches from a shop would have been v expensive and I thought that was what this thread was going to be about.

Sad I do hate it when a thread title has potential to divide opinion and just turns out to be click fodder to gain traffic.

stripedtortoise · 28/11/2014 19:33

YABU to not have specified in the title that this also included wine and chips
YABU to not have specified what you had in the sandwiches.

YANBU to think that what you did have was reasonable for a tenner per head.

If it was brought in a supermarket then yes that would be overpriced but it was a pub so no.

She sounds like a tight cow

Hulababy · 28/11/2014 22:55

I'm "up North" and still think that £10 for a sandwich, chips, salad and a large glass of wine is very normal when eating out!

RedSoloCup · 28/11/2014 22:56

I am v tight but omg £5 for a main lunch option is not expensive even round here (SE village)!!! Nor is £5 for a glass of wine.

Lomega · 28/11/2014 23:04

LOL at the thread title. I came onto this thread indignantly about to say what a rip-off that was! But I am eating my words (no pun intended)

With wine, chips and a sarnie, £10 pp is CHEAP. I don't live in London either. Would she expect to pay less in a restaurant???
