To think that £20 is ok for two sandwiches?

And chips and wine?

I've met a friend today for lunch and she almost argued that the pub we had found was expensive and we should leave and go somewhere else.

I pointed out you would be hard pressed to find somewhere else serving sandwiches for less....this was a cosy pub with an open fire and fairy lights up!! I didn't want to go somewhere else!

She kept saying £5 for a sandwich!!

I kept adding I don't think that's bad you get chips/ salad or soup too not just a sandwich.

The wine was £5 for a large.

We are in similar positions financially,it was her idea to go for lunch,AIBU?

Oh no, she must have been more embarrassed than you when she realised she couldn't afford much on the menu Sad

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 28/11/2014 17:02

Oh you paid for her? She's a tightfisted nightmare then. Can't stand people like that.

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 28/11/2014 17:04

Shatners you really think that was it? I don't.

Well, isn't she clever getting you to pay for it Hmm

She suggested lunch, no one goes out for lunch with much less than a tenner - even if you're poor and you take a fiver you still offer it to your mate

Everythingwillbeok · 28/11/2014 17:06

She has a new job in the city centre and eats out a lot!

Strange....I can't get over her keep saying "£5 for a sandwich"

She couldn't get past that I don't think,it was nice anyway but god knows where she normally goes and what she pays.

Aha, it was all a cunning ruse.........

Next time you meet she'll suggest a quick bite at Le Gavroche and then act dismayed when they don't have a £2.99 panini/coffee combo.

BellaVita · 28/11/2014 17:07

It is very reasonable, in fact more than reasonable.

EhricLovesTheBhrothers · 28/11/2014 17:08

Wow! What a rude bitch. She was happy for you to pay for her! If she was too poor to spend £10 on lunch then she shouldn't have suggested going for lunch Hmm where can you get lunch for under £10 apart from macdonalds? I can't actually believe she let you pay.

IHaveBrilloHair · 28/11/2014 17:08

That sounds like a fair price for what you had, though if you can't afford it, you can't afford it, she shouldn't have had the wine though.

ShatnersBassoon · 28/11/2014 17:08

I think she was just wrongfooted and had a bit of a panic about the cost. If she's a friend, you know she isn't usually trying to take advantage of you.

TheJiminyConjecture · 28/11/2014 17:09

If I can't afford a fiver for a sandwich and chips then I don't suggest going out for lunch.

I certainly wouldn't order a large wine if I was on a very limited budget.

Everythingwillbeok · 28/11/2014 17:09

She tells me how much money she has on a regular basis! She's very open,we earn around the same only she has no child care costs.

Really, with wine?
I don't drink when out but if the wine was £5 then a fiver for a sandwich and chips seems ok.

furcoatbigknickers · 28/11/2014 17:18

I can't bear tightness. I would happily pay £10 for a nice pub lunch sounds very cosy.

OnIlkleyMoorBahTwat · 28/11/2014 17:19

The only place I can think of where you can get lunch including a large glass of wine for much less than a tenner would be a deal at Wetherspoons or a similar cheap chain pub.

Otherwise it's Greggs, Subway etc, which is cheaper, but no wine.

Focussing on the £5 for a sandwich aspect seems a bit weird, because it wasn't even that, you also got the chips or salad. If she wanted to spend less, she could have got a cheaper drink.

If I'm on my own and just getting lunch while working, I'll usually get a lime and soda, which is usually about 60 pence, and cheaper than bottled sparkling water, which is ridiculously priced.

furcoatbigknickers · 28/11/2014 17:24

I can't believe she got you to pay

TripTrapTripTrapOverTheBridge · 28/11/2014 17:28

Price seems reasonable but why would anyone want chips with a sandwich?

LittleBearPad · 28/11/2014 17:29

£5 for a sandwich seems entirely reasonable to me. Plus another £5 for wine, perfectly sensible. Where does she normally eat?

If she's comparing prices to takeaway from Boots etc then a pub has a whole heap of other overheads and taxes that need to be included.

And you paid anyway! Shock cheeky moo.

Floggingmolly · 28/11/2014 17:34

It was five quid for the sandwich no matter who paid for it, surely?Confused
Did it really make her feel better about the "extravagance" because it came out of your pocket instead of hers? Tight as a ducks arse...

CakeAndWineAreAFoodGroup · 28/11/2014 18:14

Sounds reasonable to me. Did she expect you to find a convenient bench somewhere and then pull out a cheese sarnie and a bag of wotsits?

Sometimes you have to live a little. :)

BlueBrightBlue · 28/11/2014 18:15

I have known people like your so called friend. They fail to see that going out for lunch is a treat and it will cost more than the raw materials to produce it.
Do they ever consider the overheads for producing such a repast?
Suggest that next time she finds a cheaper alterative and that she foots the bill!
