to ask if you'd bother mentioning anything to school? (hair related)

DS(10) had his hair cut yesterday. For the last few cuts he's had it very short around the sides and longer, combed over on the top and the barber has used the clippers at where his parting would be. This accentuated it and made it look like a line.

Hair cut yesterday is very similar but he had quiffed the top a bit more rather than comb it over. It looks fashionable but it is smart.

Today he's been told off for having a clippered line in his hair (where the parting is, it's not at the side).

I fully support school rules and am intending to email and apologise and say he won't have that done again. AIBU to be a bit miffed though as this is the 4th(ish) time he's had this 'line'. Am debating whether to mention that or just apologise.

I think the "line" sounds blinking odd unless he has Afro Caribbean hair? In which case I sort of understand. Why did he get this "line" cut in?

YABU. It sounds like an extreme haircut to me.

18yearstooold · 26/11/2014 19:24

Quite a few of the boys came back with this done after the holidays

They've all been told not to have it done again

It maybe they've not noticed before but it is against the rules so no point arguing

TheAlias · 26/11/2014 19:25

I'm sorry, I've tried but I can't get beyond that much thought being given to a 10yo's hair. Mine don't even comb it unless I hold them down.

No-one can stop you being miffed but if you knew the rule and support it, why have you being doing it?

juicycelebrity · 26/11/2014 19:27

I didn't know the rule. As I said, it's never been mentioned before. Its really not extreme. You are now going to think I'm a mega saddo but here is his hair!

Haha TheAlias. He's been so grubby until about 6 months ago, we're quite pleased he's getting a sense of cleanliness. Lol

Yabu to feel miffed, half his head is shaved with a line in it! No idea whether that's fashionable or not but it looks completely unsuitable for a 10yo, sorry.

I think if it's gone unchallenged by the school up until now you've been lucky really.

TweedAddict · 26/11/2014 19:40

I think its fine to be honest.

ClawHandsIfYouBelieveInFreaks · 26/11/2014 19:40

I do think it a bit inappropriate for a ten year old OP. So I don't blame the school.

If the boys were all allowed to walk around like that, then the girls would all be turning up with ombre hair and pink streaks.

sliceofsoup · 26/11/2014 19:44

YANBU

I have never understood the angst over hair. I think schools have far bigger problems to worry about these days.

juicycelebrity · 26/11/2014 19:44

I like TweedAddict! Hehe Wink

But I respect the majorities opinion so I shall drop them an email to apologise and ensure DH is not allowed to take DS to have his hair cut unsupervised.

OP posts:
Littlefish · 26/11/2014 19:44

That haircut would not be allowed at my school. He is lucky it hasn't been picked up before, but now it has, so don't let him have it done next time.

juicycelebrity · 26/11/2014 19:44

And what is ombre hair?

OP posts:
Littlefish · 26/11/2014 19:45

Sorry - cross posted with you.

GoodKingQuintless · 26/11/2014 19:48

Blimey.

That is one "anti dis establishment" Wink hairstyle your son is sporting! Grin

Not sure what my sons school would do, ask him to wear a wig?

ClawHandsIfYouBelieveInFreaks · 26/11/2014 19:52

Juicy It's like...dip dyed. So the ends are lighter than the rest. I think.

wtffgs · 26/11/2014 19:54

Hmm, I retrieved a bewildered and lost Foundation Stage 1 new starter today. He had a lovely star pattern razored into his hair ShockGrin Sweet kid but wtf were his parents thinking? Hmm

ClawHandsIfYouBelieveInFreaks · 26/11/2014 19:55

Oh lordy.

ohmychrist · 26/11/2014 19:59

What difference does it make to his education if he has a line shaved on his head?

Anyone who thinks it's affecting his our anyone else's learning is crazy!

ohmychrist · 26/11/2014 20:00

YANBU

MiniTheMinx · 26/11/2014 20:06

I think it looks fab OP. I think its wrong to dictate hair, everyone's hair is different quite naturally without cutting, dying or styling. Its a nonsense. I can understand uniform, but hair, its not as though any will in the world could make everyone's hair look the same.

gingee · 26/11/2014 20:32

I like it FWIW
How is it inappropriate for a ten yr old?? He's a young man starting to take an interest in his appearance, dont think having a slightly more fashionable hairstyle is too bad
A lot of people on here are probably of the "I can't bring myself to cut my ds lovely hair!" school of thought, or enforce the awful "middle class pudding bowl" as my DH calls it on their sons until year 9.

ShockGrin

Op just tell school oops sorry and don't worry, it will have grown out in a couple of weeks!

TeenAndTween · 26/11/2014 20:54

Certainly wouldn't be allowed at DD1's secondary
Extremes in style not acceptable at school e.g. shaved (grade 2 or less)

juicycelebrity · 26/11/2014 21:09

GoodKingQuintless - I just snorted my wine when I read that!

Thank you to those who have said they think it looks fab. I have to agree (although I am biased lol). Tbf, that pic was taken last night straight after he got home (I've cropped a photo, I didn't take it especially to post here) it looks a lot less 'extreme' now that he's come off the sports pitch, had a shower and it's flatter. :)

Gingee That is exactly what I think. There is nothing as smelly as a Y6 classroom and so anything that gets him to take an interest in his appearance and hygiene is fine by me!

OP posts:
SquinkiesRule · 26/11/2014 21:33

It looks fine to me. Our neighbors 7 year old has his clippered with his initials, or shapes shaved onto the sides of his head, looks bloody daft to me, but it's not my kid or my hair and the school has never objected and he's a good student.

Purplepixiedust · 26/11/2014 21:48

I can't understand the fuss either, it looks fine to me. How does having this hair affect the school? Fair enough though I guess if it's the rules. They say no shaving so he will just have to have it a tiny bit longer. Tell him he can have it shaved like this in school hols.
