To think that a school should ask for parental permission before singing certain songs

Dd came home from school singing "Jesus loves me this I know for the Bible tells me so." She attends a community school and there are only two practicing christians in her class. There are seven practicing muslims, a couple of hindu and most the children come from non religous families.

I realise that schools are required to a have a broadly christian basis to their worship, but there are loads of christian songs which would not offend non christians. Why would a school choose that hymn? I know that parents do have the right to pull their children out of assembly, but they do need warning if the hymn choice is going to be that extreme.

Amen Grin

Oh I have a little tear in my eye. In my early teaching days I taught in a very deprived school in a bad area of Glasgow. The 6 yr olds were poor little grubby bairns with runny noses. They were so loving and sweet, I adored them all. They sang this song for me often. (Imagine the broadest Glasgow accent, belted out by shrill, raucous voices punctuated by coughs) Happy but poignant memories! (Sniff!)

This particular hymn has a recent history of being used against religious extremists. Jesus loves me, whatever my sexual orientation etc., and you can't take that away from me. It's one of the simplest messages though some people seem unable to grasp it. It would be great as an example for a fairly simple RE lesson in tolerance and beliefs frankly.

OP - Let It GO!!!

Santa Claus You Cunt Where's My Fucking Bike

Now that's my kind of hymn! Maybe Cliff Richard will release it this Christmas.

In all seriousness OP, what would Jesus do and how many more bloody threads are you going to start moaning about schools ?

RiverTam · 19/11/2014 21:06

what is so dreadful about that? It's not like it was 'Jesus loves me AND IF YOU DON'T LOVE ME BACK YOU'LL BURN IN HELL FOR ETERNITY.'

for usual - my (very Catholic churchgoing) mum's rendition of We Three Kings:

we three Beatles of Liverpool are
John in a taxi
George in a car
Paul on a scooter tooting his hooter
following Ringo Starr

Ah, I like that one, reminds me of my primary also a community school.
My favourite was Jesus wants me for a sunbeam, to shine on him each day.

Its a song, all schools do them, some more than others.
If it bothers you that much take your child out and educate her yourself.

I am a Christian most of my family are atheist children grow up and make their own minds up irrespective of what mum or school teach them

Thread of the day, had me rolling with laughter.

Isn't there another verse:
Jesus loves the Indian boy,
With his brown eyes full of joy,
Big Philipino,
Wee Chinese,
Girls and boys across the seas.
Yes, Jesus loves them, yes Jesus loves them, yes Jesus loves them, the Bible tells me so.

LarrytheCucumber · 19/11/2014 21:39

Or Filipino, even.

manicinsomniac · 19/11/2014 21:51

in terms of meaning that song isn't so very far removed from Away in a Manger.

How many schools can there be out there that won't sing that at some point this term?!

I'd expect our school to ask our permission (and they wouldn't get it) because DS is withdrawn from religious whatsits.

If he wasn't then I wouldn't. That's why he is.

Waitingonasunnyday · 19/11/2014 22:10

My DC came home claiming to be dingle dangle scarecrows with floppy floppy hats once, I soon told those bastards at the school to stop indoctrinating them into becoming farmers.

LarrytheCucumber · 19/11/2014 22:18

I used to love that song, Waiting Smile.
