To think that a school should ask for parental permission before singing certain songs

Dd came home from school singing "Jesus loves me this I know for the Bible tells me so." She attends a community school and there are only two practicing christians in her class. There are seven practicing muslims, a couple of hindu and most the children come from non religous families.

I realise that schools are required to a have a broadly christian basis to their worship, but there are loads of christian songs which would not offend non christians. Why would a school choose that hymn? I know that parents do have the right to pull their children out of assembly, but they do need warning if the hymn choice is going to be that extreme.

Pathetic, OP. YABU x 1,000,000. And more than a little Precious.

KissMyFatArse · 19/11/2014 18:34

Eye roll ....

VitoCorleone · 19/11/2014 18:35

YABU i thought this was going to be about an obscene song, not the Jesus loves me song.

Fairenuff · 19/11/2014 18:35

What is it, specifically, that you find offensive OP?

FFS!

DS1(20 next month) sang this song as a solo in reception. He went to a community school, I couldn't tell you what religion who practiced at home and neither did I care. What I cared about was that DS1 was happy at school and he had teachers that cared and were good at their jobs. Thankfully both those boxes were ticked.

What is going to happen when they start singing Christmas carols in a couple of weeks, or are they not allowed?

Redcoats · 19/11/2014 18:37

Blimey, the school got all eye rolly when I asked them not to play Blurred Lines at the school disco. They'd have me carted off if I complained about this.

Do non-Christians really get offended by Christian songs? I thought that was bollocks made up by the DM.

ilovesooty · 19/11/2014 18:39

I thought this would be about sexualised pop lyrics or something. Yes, you are being unreasonable and Isuspect teachers have better things to do than send out permission slips to satisfy parents obsessed with trivia.

DurhamDurham · 19/11/2014 18:39

Schools would spend all their time and resources writing to parents just to make doubly sure that someone want going to be offended to a certain song/activity/game/book.

Save your battles for the big things. A small child singing a song about Jesus is not a big thing.

AnnieOnAMapleLeaf · 19/11/2014 18:40

I'm an atheist and no, these songs do not upset me in the slightest. DD and now DS sing songs like this on a daily basis. Why the heck should it bother me?

MillieH30 · 19/11/2014 18:41

I can only assume this post is a joke. No-one is that crazy.

usualsuspect333 · 19/11/2014 18:42

I didn't like my children singing religious songs either, apart from Christmas Carols . I just taught them all the daft words to them though.

Andrewofgg · 19/11/2014 18:43

I wish I could remember how the playground version that we used to sing went on. It began Jesus loves me lots and lots - can anyone complete it?

ChimesAndCarols · 19/11/2014 18:45

How very adult of you Hmm

Trapper · 19/11/2014 18:47

I would be grumpy about this too, but because I believe the school system should be secular.
I don't think this is a battle I would fight though. I'd just stay at home and sulk to myself Smile

Whats wrong with 'While Shepherds washed their socks by night'?

I've got loads more like that

26Point2Miles · 19/11/2014 18:49

Think op wants us all to start some big mumsnet 'campaign' to hit the headlines with!

motherofmonster · 19/11/2014 18:56

Yes they should, i imagine that these children will end up with major emotional scars with nothing but possible hard drug addiction , a life of petty crime and life long therapy ahead of them due to the trauma Hmm

ChimesAndCarols · 19/11/2014 19:00

And teaching them silly words to sing in assembly will mark them out to their peers as 'strange' and to the teachers as 'defiant'!

motherofmonster · 19/11/2014 19:03

And i have to say in both impressed and scared in equal measures that the op seems to know exactly how many children in the class are which religion.
i honestly would not have a clue Confused

Woozlebear · 19/11/2014 19:04

Really? Confused

I am full on atheist- totally opposed to any legal protection for religious practice where there is none for my personal random subjective beliefs.

But even I acknowledge that a) Christianity is a strong part of our cultural heritage and is interesting, unavoidable and even valuable because of that b) people, incl children, are intelligent enough to make their own minds up- they aren't going to get brainwashed by one song.

I also suspect that people are a bit 'weird' about Christianity when they wouldn't be about another religion. If the school had sung a song from another religion would you have thought it was extreme, or would you have thought it was a good way of broadening their awareness and knowledge?

usualsuspect333 · 19/11/2014 19:04

Oh lighten up, Chimes.

Shall I teach you a few silly words?

LuckyLuckyMe · 19/11/2014 19:05

Whats wrong with 'While Shepherds washed their socks by night'?

More please Usual

ReallyTired just see it as another Christmas song like Jingle Bells or Santa Claus is coming to town.

WorraLiberty · 19/11/2014 19:06

And i have to say in both impressed and scared in equal measures that the op seems to know exactly how many children in the class are which religion.

That's exactly what I was going to say.

I've watched most of the kids in my DC's class grow up and yet I wouldn't know that.
