She has never been much into playing with toys and a bit of a weird one really.
So, I'm not surprised really, but a train set.

It's not so much as I don't want her to have one but they are expensive for just a fad for a few months. She wants it to go round her room.
I can't help thinking its more of a bedroom gadgety kind of thing that holds things, picks things up.
This seems to be the main thing she wants it for.
So AIBU to not buy it her.

My son is severely autistic and all kind of train sets are his thing. You could easily get run over at Christmas when he gets all of his Christmas ones out, including his lego ones, and has them going round the tree.

UterusUterusGhali · 15/11/2014 11:32

Really, saoirse?
She sounds very sensible to me.
Crumbs, fancy a mother being in control eh? Far better the kid stamps their feet and gets whatever they want regardless of the cost, right?

My dd is just the same; has a notion that she wants a certain toy and use it maybe twice. I would get a cheap version OP.

Inthedarkaboutfashion · 15/11/2014 12:09

uterus Laughing at your child's gift request is not sensible.
I'm not saying that OP needs to buy something that she doesn't think is suitable or will be used enough to justify the cost but there is no need to laugh at the child.

Mrsjayy · 15/11/2014 12:11

Dd asked for a macbook last year I laughed

fivepounds · 15/11/2014 12:16

Would you get it if she had a penis?

TheFirstOfHerName · 15/11/2014 12:19

I was given a train set aged 9 (N gauge) and played with it regularly until I was about 11.

DH had one that actually went around his room. The tracks are still there in the bedroom at his mum's house. He is nearly 42.

Meccano have a set with a motor and you can make different things including a crane I think.

Otherwise look at the robot Arm available at Maplins.

personally, I would much rather buy a 10 yo girl this sort of thing than a hair curlilng wand.

SuperScrimper · 15/11/2014 12:28

If my 10 year old DD wanted a train set or an Elsa dress I'd be running to the shops.

Much better than hair and make up stuff Hmm

UterusUterusGhali · 15/11/2014 12:34

inthedark I meant the op sounded sensible. Not "controlling" as someone bizarrely said.

But actually, some gift requests aren't Sensible. Those saying she should honour a little girl's wishes; would you do so if she'd asked for a pony? A MacBook? A yacht?
Not everyone can afford a £230 present for one child!
My DD has asked for a GoPro. I've said no way. What's the alternitive? Get a wonga loan or go on the game? Jeez.

ancientbuchanan · 15/11/2014 12:36

I desperately wanted one for years. My parents bought me a measly wind up engine that broke and no tracks. I didn't want a mega one, just a circle with trucks to out things in.
I sympathise with both you, from my parents' point of view, and her. I wasn't a girly girl either, though I loved my stuffed toys.

SistersOfPercy · 15/11/2014 14:18

Mrsjay are you me? lol DD (17) cosplays at comic cons. She's done Fionna from Adventure Time and Harley Quinn this year. I came to the 'if you can't beat em join em conclusion and purchased a full size stormtrooper kit. It needs assembling so is several months of hard work, but when finished I can hopefully join the UK Garrison and Cosplay it for charity Grin. Mother is, shall we say bemused.

Back to trains. One of my friends brothers as a kid had the box room. Fitted to his wall was like a square 'box' on hinges that fitted flush to the wall and I always wondered what it was. One day she undid the bolt, pulled down the front and pulled out an enormous train set. It was fixed into the wood, all painted with scenery, hills and stations. When he'd finished it just pulled back up and bolted back to the wall. A bit like a wall bed but for trains. I loved it, I tried desperately to get DS and DD into trains but alas it wasn't to be.

Mrsjayy · 15/11/2014 14:23

Dd was Harley quinn this year

morethanpotatoprints · 16/11/2014 19:27

Hello all.

I am going to get her a small one and as suggested she can add to it if she wants to.
I'm not controlling but am trying to buy things that I know will be played with, or used. I think it is not only a waste of money but a waste of a present if they find out it isn't for them, it is a long time till the following xmas and her birthday is January, so just trying to be thoughtful.
Thank you uterus We don't have a huge amount to spend on her at xmas as she costs us so much in music lessons over the year.

To those who take offence at me laughing at her, it wasn't in the context of bullying, more a what did you say type of reaction. When I told her dad he was just as surprised tbh. She is a confident girl and used to people laughing at her, she is a performer.

I think it's a great idea to get a little set you/she can add to.

Do discuss with her what it is she really wants, though - without laughing, even if you think it's all in fun, as she may want something she knows her friends won't "get". At a bit older than her (not much) I used to love making the little buildings you could get as flat cardboard cutouts, and have a whole box full somewhere. I never did have the trainset to go with them (I never wanted it) but I've made models all my life. Not that this was something I shared with my friends as a teen - or even now.

DS has inherited my love - he paints Warhammer models but isnt interested in playing the games.

I've forgotten what the name was of the poster who really wanted a train set and got some crappy fashion toy instead - but seriously, go get yourself one now, no need to miss out any more.

grassroots · 16/11/2014 19:44

Has she been watching the Teen Cribs programme by any chance? There was a recent episode where the totally spoiled brats teenagers had - amongst everything else - a train set that went around the whole room. I can see how it would have looked totally cool to any kids watching. To be honest it made me quite want one too….

morethanpotatoprints · 16/11/2014 20:08

grassroots

I don't think she has seen this, she watches very little tv, mainly Dr Who, more films really.
I think it was The Polar express tbh.
It does sound cool though, even though I could never afford/justify spending hundreds on one.
I suppose if money is no object and you don't mind giving into every whim as these type of parents do then the sky is the limit in terms of presents. Grin
