She has never been much into playing with toys and a bit of a weird one really.
So, I'm not surprised really, but a train set.

It's not so much as I don't want her to have one but they are expensive for just a fad for a few months. She wants it to go round her room.
I can't help thinking its more of a bedroom gadgety kind of thing that holds things, picks things up.
This seems to be the main thing she wants it for.
So AIBU to not buy it her.

To me, it sounds like you'd be happy to shell out if it was smething you'd be sure she'd get use and enjoyment out of for longer than a month.

I'd suggest looking for a set that's smaller and cheaper for now, but that can be added to using pocket money or future gifts if she remains enthusiastic.

SunshineAndShadows · 14/11/2014 23:33

My brother had an amazing hornby train set that ran around his room. I spent hours with plaster of Paris moulds making station houses and villages for the set and watching it run. I was desperate for my own, asked for it 2 years in a row along with a bmx bike. I even scavenged a big piece of msd and mapped out a track to show my parents i ficn't need a big set. I received a tiny-tears doll and a makeup/hairstyle head thing. Never used. Still bitter. 34 years old ,

Mrsjayy · 14/11/2014 23:38

Yes see what you can get second hand collectors are always selling

Mrsjayy · 14/11/2014 23:41

If we are moaning I wasn't allowed a scelextric or a planet of the apes set I was desperate for my boy cousin got the planet of the apes thing I got a frigging girls world that I drew on and cut its hair

SistersOfPercy · 14/11/2014 23:45

I desperately wanted a train set at that age, or a scalextric but this was 1983 and girls didn't have them according to my mother.
Girls also didn't have star wars toys either apparently, something that my dh now firmly blames my mother for as our dining room is heaving with star wars stuff Grin

Refuse her request now and in twenty years time you'll have a daughter who's a train spotter Grin
No, seriously, just look for the smaller sets until you know if this is going to be a serious hobby or a passing phase.

Mrsjayy · 14/11/2014 23:53

Dont get me started on starwars a chewbacca is all I wanted

morethanpotatoprints · 14/11/2014 23:56

Thanks for all the nice posts, and please believe there is no gender issue, I was lucky and my parents bought me trains and cars, science sets, as well as girly stuff.
I have no reason except cost and commitment to playing with it to not buy her a full expensive set.
I will buy little and see what happens and think that's a wonderful idea Thanks

Look on eBay for tomy tomica track. You can get a load of track sections second hand for a tenner them buy a couple of nice trains (Amazon have good ones, search for tomica train). The track is very easy to change into different layouts and quick to pack away. We often have it going round one room, down the hall and into another transporting stuff around!

46direct · 15/11/2014 00:07

I wanted an army jumper...my boy cousin got the one I accidentally found in the airing cupboard felt major joy and then devastation on christmas day when he got it.

Bambambini · 15/11/2014 00:21

I wanted a Hornby train set too (to be fair we didn't have the room) and a garage where the cars would go down the twirling ramp. And weebils wobbles for some strange reason.

DamselNotInHerDress · 15/11/2014 00:27

Have a look on eBay etc for a small set which can tide her over. She's old enough to realise that you grow a collection over time rather than just receiving a huge bundle all in one go. And then you can add to it if she remains keen, no pressure if she doesn't.

And if we're having a whinge, I really wanted a Turtles blimp and instead I got a Mr Frosty Angry and the handle snapped off on its first use Hmm

There's some amazing build kits out there that lift/move/transport stuff.

I always wanted a train set as a kid though!

Katinkka · 15/11/2014 09:04

I bought this for one of mine this Christmas. A good starting point I think. www.very.co.uk/hornby-west-coast-highlander/1408788111.prd and half price.

Mrsjayy · 15/11/2014 09:58

My husband has a model railway he built trees and sheds and knows all the guages of the different size trains and he says hes not a geek Grin maybe it be something your dd could get into

SistersOfPercy · 15/11/2014 10:33

Mrsjay it was the at at and darths lightsaber for me, partly why I have a rather large collection of at ats and fully working sabers now.

Every time she visits she tuts hehe

Inthedarkaboutfashion · 15/11/2014 10:36

They do Lego trains? Omg, I want one.

Mrsjayy · 15/11/2014 10:37

I am Envy of your light sabres, my dad tutted when dd1 got cars for Christmas one year and dd2 is into cosplay the parents dont get it

saoirse31 · 15/11/2014 10:37

You sound v controlling tbh... surely she's old enough to express her opinion without her 'd'm telling her that she's wrong and laughing at her. Strange attitude imo.

LonnyVonnyWilsonFrickett · 15/11/2014 10:40

Just buy her as much as you can afford, and if she plays with it it can be added to over the next few years - which also means you won't be stuck for present ideas next birthday and Christmas! These big sets take years to build up and she's old enough to understand that now.

Mrsjayy · 15/11/2014 10:42

She doesn't sound controlling at all she doesn't want her dd to be faddy and it is expensive to have a train track running round a bedroom that isn't controlling

OftheTwilighttheDarkness · 15/11/2014 10:43

www.amazon.co.uk/Zeon-Limited-BIGTRAK-Bigtrak/dp/B0035IZ85G

What about one of these (a big track) if she want's to move stuff about.

CariadsDarling · 15/11/2014 10:45

It never ceases to amaze me a the age of the children who play with the train set we have at work for the wee ones. They never get near it and its the older kids who come out of their karate class who have most fun with it. its a lovely sight to see, kids with orange karate belts on the floor playing with a train set.

I second the lego ones - they're fab

Metalguru · 15/11/2014 10:47

The cost, and whether she will get enough use out if it are two separate things. I try really, really hard to get my 3 dc whatever they ask for at Christmas, even if I suspect they won't play with it for long after Christmas, because I think Its so magical for them on Christmas morning when they get what they were hoping for. I'm pretty tight the rest of the year though :) if it is too expensive, look for something similar but cheaper, but I wouldn't disregard her wishes because you think it's a phase. You're probably right, but with eBay, Facebook groups etc it's so easy to sell on unwanted toys, especially something that will hold it's value like a train set.

Inthedarkaboutfashion · 15/11/2014 11:00

I have looked at the Lego train sets now and I am considering whether I can put it on my birthday wish list (DP won't be able to afford it for Christmas as too late now). I wonder if DH will laugh at me if I request one or if he will happily oblige knowing that he can add something new to it every year and save himself having to think of things to buy me.
