To think Carrie from Homeland is the most irritating character on the telly right now?!

Trying to drown her own child, dropping drones and pulling her hair behind her ears with alarming force - why do they all fancy her and how does she get a job in intelligence!

I've no problem with Carrie being 'damaged' RedTooth - she always was damaged, though, it's not like it's new this season - it's the lazy, stereotyped, gendered way in which her 'damage' is now being constructed that bothers me. It would have been far more surprising, and interesting, to have her be a faulty but more-or-less coping mother, or to give her some complicated emotions about being apart from her child, rather than the 'Ugh! A baby! Take it away!' approach.

LittleMissCrankyPants · 13/11/2014 12:01

spoiler alert would have been nice!

Notbythehaironmychinnychinchin · 13/11/2014 12:13

What spoilers? The baby in the bath was two weeks ago at least and the touching up of the recruit started at the end of the episode on the 2nd Nov. The title included the words "Homeland" and "right now" so it couldn't really have been clearer that it was discussing current storylines.

sharon56bus · 13/11/2014 12:16

Brody will sort her out when the Iranians let him go .............

Meechimoo · 13/11/2014 12:20

Brodie is dead. Why are some people suggesting he isn't? !

textingdisaster · 13/11/2014 12:26

The only spoiler I can see is the suggestion that Carrie and Quinn will get together or were there inklings of that in the episode I missed 2 weeks ago? (And it's true that there hasn't been enough chemistry between them to make this seem plausible - they were closer in the last series).

I know Brody is dead and that we saw it happen but I also think he is going to materialise somehow Confused.

textingdisaster · 13/11/2014 12:28

(And I've always thought that Quinn is way more attractive than Brody ever was).

Chandon · 13/11/2014 12:28

wishful thinking?

I still think the show is good.

I hope Pi is playing Carrie, otherwise it is all a bit horrible. I would like him to pull a fast one on her. The seduction scene is so drawn out....

I was wondering (hoping) if he has been set up as "bait" for Carrie, the same way Saul used Carrie as bait in Season 2.

Now that would be an interesting turn of events.

Meechimoo · 13/11/2014 12:28

I bloody hope so. Brodie was Homeland. It's shit without him.

BOFster · 13/11/2014 12:28

I don't think a Carrie-Quinn romance has been flagged up at all: the bond between them is pretty nuanced, and while Quinn might love her on one level, he's also pretty disgusted by her behaviour.

OpenSandwich · 13/11/2014 12:30

I've stopped watching now as it's lost all it's suspense and emotion. Just another action-heavy soap opera, no depth to the story. It's all frantic dialogue and shouting, I can't be bothered.

I also think it's ludicrous that Carrie would continue to be put under these extreme pressures given her fragile health.

Some of the pre-series publicity was a bit ambiguous re Brody. They basically said "wait and see" - of course that could be a double bluff and he is just dead...

textingdisaster · 13/11/2014 12:50

Yes, odd the way Brody's family have all but disappeared?? Given also that his kids now have a baby sister.

The sight of Saul in the boot of that car quite distressing - I hope it's not the end of his character.

ghostyslovesheep · 13/11/2014 13:20

I like the idea that if a man did 80% of the things Carrie does though no one would bat an eyelid - so I enjoy the outrage

Clarabumps · 13/11/2014 13:27

Has anyone seen the video of Saul singing "Younger than springtime" from South Pacific? He was the voice behind that song. It's on you tube. He was lovely when he was younger. Mandi the hotty.

I love Carrie even though she's irritating as fuck, she's a great character.
I like the fact she goes off the rails and also thing that if she were a man she wouldn't be viewed in the same light. Look at Jack Bauer. I know he wasn't bi polar but his actions were pretty similar.

textingdisaster · 13/11/2014 14:10

Here is Mandy Patinkin singing "Younger Than Springtime". Very moving!

textingdisaster · 13/11/2014 14:11

(Now think Mandy Patinkin slightly wasted in Homeland!).

Notbythehaironmychinnychinchin · 13/11/2014 14:33

I don't think the criticism is because Carrie is female at all. I think it is because she is carrying (Carrie-ing?) the show so if her storylines become lame then the entire show suffers.

It can and does happen to male characters - the last few series of House were not a patch on the first ones, Prison Break, even House of Cards (although the first series was SO spectaular I can forgive it a little...)

Firbolg · 13/11/2014 15:09

I think I've read somewhere that Damian Lewis was spotted on the set in South Africa (which is pretending, not very convincingly, to be Islamabad) - or was that just another random internet rumour? I was assuming he was only there to shoot flashbacks, or Carrie coming off her meds and hallucinating or something, though.

I think it's refreshing to see a woman who isn't with her child all the time on TV and that they show someone with a mental health problem and who isn't Mrs Nice as Pie in an apron serving her husband as so many TV shows show. Some of us don't want to be with our children all the time and like to work, beat men, achieve and enjoy power. There are not enough women on TV shown like that and yet we are all out there.

Firbolg · 13/11/2014 15:19

Oh, and Mandy Patinkin is a musical genius. His Sondheim album is one of my favourites - and he can't even read music, so he has to do it all by ear.

diddl · 13/11/2014 15:19

I was so glad to see the back of Brody.

The romance between them was imo absolutely ridiculous.

I don't like her character & I don't think that that matters.

And it's not real, but it would be better if some of it wasn't just so improbable!

honeycrest · 13/11/2014 15:27

Brody's family were extremely irritating, I'm glad they aren't in it anymore. I'm enjoying this season, I think it is better than the previous one anyway. I do think that, knowing Carrie's mental health situation, her seniors should be a bit more concerned with her behaviour. The only one who seems to question anything she does is Quinn.

And I don't doubt for a second that the real CIA use similar tactics to recruit 'assets', and worse.

I've read that Mandy Patinkin is a nightmare to work with. Rude and as huge diva.
