Day off school to see Santa?

We've left it too late again - hearts set on a particular place this year. The only slots they have left are during the last week of term. Would I be unreasonable to give them a day off? They are 8 and 5.

Shit not shot

You get the gist....

waithorse · 12/11/2014 10:38

I've just looked at the website. The lanterns look bloody amazing, it will be magical in the run up to Christmas. Go op Blush

Enjorasdream · 12/11/2014 11:16

The marketing department really have a lot of you sucked in. 'A once in a lifetime experience' so are a lot of things. they will not suffer if they don't see it.
We used to see Santa in the Co Op whilst other kids didn't even get THAT lucky. I always wanted to go to Disneyworld as a kid. I don't feel deprived because I didn't. Your kids will not be disadvantaged if you take them to the local dept store.

Oh for goodness sake, a day out of school is not going to set a president for a downward spiral of school attendance. Don't tell them they're missing school, go on a Friday and bloody enjoy it, they are small for such a short time. Don't let the self-righteous posters suck the joy out of it. I took my two out of school for a day to go to Disneyland Paris at Christmas a few years ago, admittedly before the attendance rules changed, it was an amazing experience and you can use any outing as a learning experience. Go and have a great time. Smile

Quite. BUt then my BF all through university had a holiday job being a Father Christmas. No glamour there really, and he certainly wasn't a " once in a lifetime experience" Grin

LST · 12/11/2014 13:12

Go op. Have fun. They are kids once.

Confused

Nope.... no marketing dept working on us here!

I have been myself seen the vast scale of the work going on....I have seen the lanterns being hand made by huge teams and walked round the ones there, I can see with my own eyes the scale of this. Even my hard to excite DH agreed to going back and even suggested it, when I suggested going to Longleat last year, sans Lanterns he was adamant NO.

He loves Longleat and agrees the lanterns are a one off.

Don't tell them they're missing school, go on a Friday and bloody enjoy it, they are small for such a short time. This is what we are doing!

ZeViteVitchofCwismas · 12/11/2014 13:46

It's about telling the nice man what you want Santa to bring you, and also some lanterns. It's a pathetic reason not to go to school.

"Heaven wheels above you, displaying to you her eternal glories, and still your eyes are on the ground." Wink

This thread has reminded me why my DH was so keen to home school. I told him about this thread and he said, "Pfft. These women on the computer are so narrow minded. I'm amazed English children learn anything useful!" DH is German btw. smile Have fun

Yeah - we're in the US and it's much more like the German attitude. When the kids get back from wherever they went they're asked to share what they learnt or experienced with the other kids too.

I wish you were my mummy Smile

Strange post as it is illegal to HE in Germany and German HE families in US face deportation see here!

rumbleinthrjungle · 14/11/2014 17:44

They are highly unlikely as adults to remember that one day at school among their many days at school - particularly in the last week of term - but very likely to remember a really special day out as a family. Do it, family memories matter so much in growing up. And have a lovely time. (Teacher)

Mehitabel6 · 14/11/2014 18:04

They never remember the things you think they will remember! I don't think mine have remembered that sort of day out.

Interesting how hard people will work to miss a point :-)

merrymouse · 14/11/2014 18:37

I'm not missing the point of the thread, but am confused and curious about relevance of the German DH.

Mehitabel6 · 14/11/2014 19:04

I wasn't missing the point-just surprised that we can go off on a side line from someone's whose German husband wanted to HE, when he can't in his own country, and then find that they are quoted by someone who lives in US, a country who is deporting Germans who go there to HE!!

RedSoloCup · 14/11/2014 19:30

Hi OP

We have some lovely grotto's in a few beautiful local garden nurseries that aren't even well advertised and could be worth a try in your area?

We just arrive on the morning buy a ticket and join a queue and the kids love it :-)

Can't be arsed to read the whole thread, but if you're local to Longleat, the best Father Christmas is on the steam train from Bitton. Failing that, Whitehall Garden Centre near Lacock.

ZeViteVitchofCwismas · 14/11/2014 20:49

Ohh.

You have not read the thread have you, She is taking them on the santa train which is pretty booked up all weekends. I know because we are taking day off school.

There is also other stuff going on.

Missing one day is not denying her DC down time at school. Its a one off. I agree with previous poster who said in years to come, dc will not remember that day at school but hopefully will remember this day at longleat as a treasured childhood memory.
