to hate the word 'up-cycling'?

It drives me absolutely potty. What the actual fuck does it even mean? Isn't up-cycling just the same as recycling, really? Taking someone which was used up/going to be thrown out and using it for something else?

Why can't these rich fucking ponces just say up-cycling?

God, I'm in such a bad mood this morning and listening to some cunt on the radio going on about up-cycling some old shite has driven me around the bend.

I blame property/Design Challenge -type programmes for the fetishisation of 'upcycling', 'vintage finds' and whatnot. My pet hate is the 'Wow factor!'

mousemates · 10/11/2014 12:31

Lunaballoon Eugh, yes definitely. Normally when they say things have the 'wow factor', they actually really do because I think 'wow that looks shit'.

It's about the fact that the words themselves are cuntish and pretentious and don't need to exist.

But this isn't a FACT - it is your opinion.

And you asked AIBU? (which is a question BTW) and I am saying yes you are.

What you really want is for everyone to agree with you - you aren't asking a question at all! And you are shouting down anyone who disagrees with you. So why ask in the first place?

LemonChicken · 10/11/2014 12:35

But this isn't a FACT - it is your opinion.

and it's your opinion that twat-language is superior/better/more concise. It doesn't stop you stating it. So what's your issue with the OP stating non-factual opinions?

BeCool · 10/11/2014 12:37

Whatever Lemon

GuybrushThreepwoodMP · 10/11/2014 12:38

Re-use is another strategy and means actually ensuring in the original design that it can be reused at the end of its life- for example designing something so it can be deconstructed and reconstructed elsewhere like a meccano set. Or just reusing without making any changes.

Sorry to be pedantic- you might have guessed that I work in sustainability!

Lemon Grin

The thread is a ranty light hearted AIBU so I guess I generally expected people to join in a ranty light hearted chat about knobby words.

Guy You're hurting my brian

What you need is a word which refers to changing a product at the end of its life in a way which adds lifetime, longevity and value.

mousemates · 10/11/2014 12:41

Guy BRAIN, not Brian. Hmm

OP posts:
grocklebox · 10/11/2014 12:42

YABU. It's called the natural evolution of language. And you're being nasty and judgemental to boot.

mousemates · 10/11/2014 12:42

Guy Spruced up, tarted up?

Yes indeed - the Oxford English Dictionary tells us there is indeed such a word - you'll never guess what it is .......

"Upcycling refers to ‘the operation or process of reusing waste materials to create a product of higher value or quality’. In an unusual etymological twist, evidence suggests that das Upcycling may have existed as a pseudoanglicism in German before it was used in English."

grocklebox · 10/11/2014 12:46

Text speak is an entirely different thing.

GuybrushThreepwoodMP · 10/11/2014 12:47

Tarted up is excellent. I'm going to use it in my next academic publication...
God I wish I could!

mousemates · 10/11/2014 12:47

grockle how?

OP posts:
enriquetheringbearinglizard · 10/11/2014 12:47

Its not really made it better or worse, just different: side-cycling, do we think

customizing

A rich and extensive vocabulary is a wonderful thing. Most of the examples given here though are indeed examples of The Emperor's New Clothes e.g. the 'up-cycled' hat and coat stand which eventually proved neither use nor ornament.

LemonChicken · 10/11/2014 12:48

Lemon Grin, The thread is a ranty light hearted AIBU so I guess I generally expected people to join in a ranty light hearted chat about knobby words.

Exactly! I have no idea why becool is losing her cool at you stating your negative opinions on twatty language, yet she feels free to state her pro opinions on it. Maybe she can upcycle her eye roll to an ornate letterbox, or something equally twattish wowsers.

mousemates · 10/11/2014 12:51

Lemon No idea. I'm going to up-cycle some cold tap water into a cup of tea now.

OP posts:
BeCool · 10/11/2014 12:52

wow Lemon - so now you are one of the people you call "twats" who use the word "upcycle"!

What brilliant Self-twattery!

and the urban dictionary tells us there is also a term for these kinds of words - you'll never guess what it is.....

"Twattery-When somebody acts like a complete twat-Tom Is Just Full Of Twattery"

grocklebox · 10/11/2014 12:53

I don't think its very light hearted to call people poncey twats and cunts in your OP.
It's just a bit cuntish.

GuybrushThreepwoodMP · 10/11/2014 12:54

You are being pretty fucking rude lemon.

Pipbin · 10/11/2014 12:54

I'm off to sell some totes amazeballs up-cycled stuff in my vintage pop-up shop.
