Parents smoking weed at a children's party

CandODad · 08/11/2014 15:48

So, I hire out a piece of party equipment to children's parties and since it's worth a considerable amount of money intend not to leave the place it's beong used at. I don't need to be with it so I tend to just sit in the van where I know I can see should it "need moving"

The window is open slightly so the van doesn't steam up. Am I the only one shocked by the fact there are at least eight parents at this party that seem to openly smoking weed out in the car park while a seven year olds birthday party goes on inside (one parent of which is the dad of the party child) and children are popping out now and again to talk to parents etc?

Those aren't really comparable Hmm.

As far as I am aware, cannabis is still illegal?

I don't have a huge problem with cannabis, I know lots of people who smoke it, it can make them really boring company but that's all.

I just don't think smoking it around children or whilst responsible for them is acceptable.

But I think the same about drinking.

JaneFonda · 09/11/2014 00:02

I think a person's moral compass can be separate from what the law says.

They are comparable, if someone is saying something is wrong because it's illegal, then surely that goes for all things that are illegal.

So abortion used to be wrong but now isn't, and homosexuality used to be wrong but now isn't? I don't agree with that reasoning at all, titchy.

Jolleigh · 09/11/2014 00:05

There are many outdated laws: www.buzzfeed.com/tabathaleggett/ridiculous-and-outdated-british-laws-that-still-exist?s=mobile

(on the app so can't link)

Re being high and in charge of children...there's no way of knowing here if that was actually the case. There were obviously some adults inside too who very well may not have been high.

Alisvolatpropiis · 09/11/2014 00:07

So, to be clear Jane - you are comparing the persecution and oppression of gay men, and the oppression and suffering of women to er...the oppression of drug users?

Can you not see that the things you are choosing as comparables to cannabis being illegal are not actually comparable at all?

Jolleigh · 09/11/2014 00:12

Jane is merely making a point that something being illegal doesn't mean it's wrong. Stop twisting her words.

Jolleigh · 09/11/2014 00:14

In fact, looking back, you were the one who said that something being illegal makes it wrong. So Jane's point here is her checking whether you actually believe the rubbish you've spouted. Clearly not Hmm.

ThereMustAndShallBeTea · 09/11/2014 00:15

A beer wouldn't make me pissed. A (rolled by DH) joint wouldn't make me stoned. I wouldn't drive after either.

Some massive leaps going on here - ZOMG, someone has a joint, they must be off their tits and in charge of children and passing the doobie to the kids and drug driving!!!!!

Personally I judge a couple of adults having a joint outside while kids play inside far less than the woman I see lighting up a (completely legal so therefore fine Hmm) cigarette in a car containing a three year old and a very small baby with the windows up every week.

Legality schmegality. Different things are legal or not in different places. How bizarre to base your moral compass on something so arbitrary.

OP, were they rolled joints or pipes, in which case could they actually have been ecigs?

Alisvolatpropiis · 09/11/2014 00:17

Neither abortions nor homosexuality have been illegal in English and Welsh law in my lifetime.

Something being illegal, as in, currently would make doing it wrong. Hmm

Jolleigh · 09/11/2014 00:20

So what you're saying is back when it was illegal, it was genuinely wrong to be gay? To have an abortion?

ThereMustAndShallBeTea · 09/11/2014 00:20

But both are illegal right now in other parts of the world, Alis Confused

ThereMustAndShallBeTea · 09/11/2014 00:25

So it would be fine if cannabis was legal?

Do you ever go 33 mph in a 30 zone with your kids in the car? ;)

pictish · 09/11/2014 00:26

Something being illegal, as in currently, would make doing it wrong

Goodness what simplistic view of the world. Bless you.

WhizzpopWhizzBang · 09/11/2014 00:28

It is quite normal tbh and has been for many years.

What?! No. No it really isn't, and Christ alive knows where you love or what type of people you hang about with but it really ISN'T normal.

Jolleigh · 09/11/2014 00:29

Alis did you happen to know that spousal rape was only criminalised in England in 1991? Was it ok before then?

You seriously need to have a think about the difference between 'legal' and 'wrong'.

WhizzpopWhizzBang · 09/11/2014 00:29

where you live not love.

Jolleigh · 09/11/2014 00:33

It is fairly normal though Whizzpop. Genuinely. Certain age ranges are bound to have seen more of it, as are people from certain areas and backgrounds. Several of my friends do it. A family member does. Countless previous colleagues have. My old boss did (and I worked for a director of a household name).

Jolleigh · 09/11/2014 00:36

Christ, my teachers smoked weed. One of my collage tutors was partial to hash brownies. I've even known a doctor who smokes weed.

Greythorne · 09/11/2014 00:37

Being illegal does not make something wrong.

Or do you mean only in countries like the UK?

What if we lived in a repressive regime? What is "wrong" then?

WhizzpopWhizzBang · 09/11/2014 00:39

Certain age ranges are bound to have seen more of it, as are people from certain areas and backgrounds. Several of my friends do it.

Several of my friends used to do it too. Back when we were in our twenties. (I never did it. Never interested.)
Now in our thirties, with kids, they've stopped doing it. Of the opinion why would you smoke drugs with kids around? Disgusting.
They don't need to be breathing it in.

WhizzpopWhizzBang · 09/11/2014 00:40

Christ, my teachers smoked weed.

What, in class?! Confused

ChippingInAutumnLover · 09/11/2014 00:40

It most certainly wouldn't happen around here!!

Jolleigh · 09/11/2014 00:48

Haha! No, not in class Whizzbang. But kids can be shits...when one of them goes through a teacher's bag and finds a grinder, they're pretty much rumbled. And since school, I've discovered that there are a few of the teachers who have bought weed from former students.

Jolleigh · 09/11/2014 00:52

I'm not saying it's right to have a joint where a child can breathe it in by the way, but nor do I agree it's ok to have a cigarette (completely legal) where a child can breathe it. These parents were outside doing something that is pretty commonplace nowadays. Having a joint isn't the same as getting really stoned, just like having a drink isn't the same as getting really drunk.

HeeHiles · 09/11/2014 00:54

Alis have you any idea as to why cannabis is illegal?

Clue: It has nothing whatsoever to do with being dangerous!

Everything to do with money and profit for the cotton farmers of America.......so not illegal because its wrong - just them cotton growers didn't like hemp being better quality and cheaper than cotton - they spread all sorts of propaganda, lobbied the Government and here we are!

I smoke weed - I run my own business, studying for a degree and raising two children. I don't smoke tobacco with my spliffs and I don't drink alcohol. But put the girls to bed and then I kick back and relax with a lovely smoke. None of that nasty skunk yuk! It should be legalised!

Oh and its not addictive either, just lovely!

Bogeyface · 09/11/2014 00:55

Given that cannabis has been proven to cause mental health issues, not least schizophrenia, plus has been proven to be a "gateway" drug to harder drugs then YANBU.

Alcohol is not something I would be happy to see at a childs birthday party either, but I feel that weed is worse not least because it isnt the "grass" that was around when I was younger but Skunk etc, which is much stronger.
