Band Aid 2014.....Really?

Ok, I get that its a good cause but seriously?? ANOTHER rehash of that same song? Plus, Geldof has recruited One Direction for the new version Hmm

AIBU to think its time to "rip off the band aid" so to speak? The least they could do is write a new song...

But think Lemma's opinion through a bit more...

... would the masses listen to, pay for, be interested in any unknown-to-them artist singing a sad song for Ebola victims?

The reason Band Aid works is that it touches The Masses and gives them a simple opportunity to contribute.

Those of us who are more mature in our aid thinking don't have to like it, agree with it or even give it a second thought. It is not aimed at us. We learned the terrible lesson of the 85 event, the same as Geldof and the rest of the world did. To keep on referring to it without acknowledging the changes made, lessons learned is disingenuous at the best.

Some people sound as though they are blaming Geldof, as if he could/should have known what would happen. Well, hindsight is a wonderful thing, just as cat flaps are blindingly obvious, once you have seen one!

For those in Africa who want Band Aid done differently well, no! If someone else, say Damon Albarn wants to work with African artists, then great - personally I am more likely to listen to the outcome of that. But Geldof does not work like that and I think it is remarkably self centred to ask him to be someone else, working in a completely different manner. This works for him and he gets good results. The accusations of being utterly patronising can be thrown both ways in this.

I shall continue to ignore Band Aid, the song and the money raising. It is not aimed at me, the original 85 event opened my eyes and made me a much more mature and thoughtful aid giver. But I will continue to support all of those involved and to encourage those it is aimed at to contribute, in the hope they too learn the lessons I did.

I liked the song 30 years ago, learnt it, bought it, went to LiveAid and thought I'd done something to help, even though I knew I was also getting something out of it.

I listened to Geldof speak on the News this morning, liked what he had to say and the way he said it, so bought this one. Meh. It cost 99p, none of the artists are taking a cut, Apple/ITunes won't be taking a cut. Maybe my quid will help, maybe it won't. But certainly doing nothing won't.

I don't get the angst, really I dont. It was made with best of intentions and will hopefully help some people. I can't deploy out there to give practical help, so I'll do this instead.

secretsquirrels · 17/11/2014 13:14

Hassled I'm glad you said that.
I wish I could put into words how angry this thread makes me. What a load of sanctimonious intellectual snobbery.
This will raise cash from many, many people who would not normally be donating to charity. For what it's worth I have donated to MSF for 20 years. Doesn't stop me applauding Bob.

AmazonGrace · 17/11/2014 13:25

It must be difficult to organise something like this, getting all the artists together etc so I can fully understand why they've gone with the original song, plus we all KNOW what the song represents, it's doing it's job though and raising money and that's what this is about.

AmazonGrace · 17/11/2014 13:29

Also agree with Hassled regarding Bob Geldof, he should be applauded for making the effort just like he was back in the 80's.

wigglesrock · 17/11/2014 13:30

I don't get the angst and sniffiness about it either. I was 10/11 when the original came out. I bought it on single, my parents did, I remember school collecting for it. My parents used Live Aid and the single to explain to me about charity and raising money and other countries because they had both spend time and we had lived when I was very young in an African country. My eldest daughter is now 9 and she wants the single/download because the singers/bands in it appeal to her and she sees it as a tangible thing that she can do to help.

AuntieStella · 17/11/2014 13:31

Well, it seems to be raising a lot of money quickly, and unlike other crises where there are more complex issues, what is needed right now for tackling Ebola is more money to pay for the resources. This is one of the rare scenarios where cash is exactly what is needed and can be given with far fewer concerns of diversion from the intended purpose.

He's been on the news this morning and had completely denied the newspaper stories about Adele.

CiderwithBuda · 17/11/2014 13:31

I agree secretsquirrels. And Hassled.

It doesn't matter if you hate Bob Geldof. It's not about him.
It doesn't matter if you don't know any of the current artists.
It doesn't matter if you hate any of the current artists.
It doesn't matter if you hate the song.
It doesn't matter if the lyrics are good, bad or indifferent.

It's 99p. 99p. That's all.

It will raise money. And lots has been learned in how better to channel donations. It will raise money from teens etc buying it. It will also raise awareness.

I bought it this morning. I also donated to MSF weeks ago. The two are not mutually exclusive. You can do both. Or one.

I hope it does well.

AuntieStella · 17/11/2014 13:34

You don't even have to buy the single if you hate it. You can donate by text (if press accounts are right, that's raised over £1m already).

CalamityKate1 · 17/11/2014 13:37

Had to laugh at the video on XFactor last night; quite a few of the singers couldn't seem to remember - or didn't realise in the first place - that the chorus is now HEAL the world, not FEED the world.

BeCool · 17/11/2014 14:20

I hope it raises load of dosh for Ebola charities.

just watched to video and I don't know who most of the people are.

It's a real shame they didn't change the "Feed The World" line - missed opportunity. I would think people affected by Ebola give as much a shit about a European Xmas as the Ethiopian famine victims did.

I just want to say I wish Bono would fuck the fuck off - I'm still recovering from the U2 home invasion via itunes Shuffle play over the weekend. Fucker.

BreakingDad77 · 17/11/2014 14:37

Cant believe the rubbish Geldof giving Adele.

Hello shes bringing up a child away from the druggie filled industry of the 80's that you revelled (read at weekend about how in first band aid people doing coke) in which claimed your ex wife, daughter, and left a grieving husband and grand kids.

On a separate note can't Bono withdraw gracefully from development, while donating some of the large amounts of tax he has 'saved'?

AuntieStella · 17/11/2014 14:40

Bob completely denied everything to do with the newspaper accounts concerning Adele. He said he'd not spoken directly to her, he knew nothing of what was purported to have happened until today; said he knew she wasn't writing/performing/etc at the moment, that it was entirely her prerogative to take a break from pop and that was all fine and good.

I suppose it comes down to whether you believe him or The Sun (as she doesn't appear to have commented).

SistersOfPercy · 17/11/2014 16:54

Can we just go back to Mr Taylor for a bit, the thread was nice with him in it

Band Aid 2014.....Really?
OhBuggeringBollocks · 17/11/2014 19:59

still a hotty

I think it's just us talking to each other now sisters

TheRealAmandaClarke · 17/11/2014 21:06

Gorgeous Blush

LovleyRitaMeterMaid · 17/11/2014 21:15

It's a pile of shite and seeing his self serving pus all over tv has enraged me. And the fuckers singing are only interested in themselves, all trying to out do each other.

Boring, lazy pish.

Oh, and there's still more people dying from aids in Africa.

I bet geldof was chuffed when yet another African crisis broke, so he could dust of that banal format yet again.

Sparklingbrook · 17/11/2014 21:18

pus? Confused

LovleyRitaMeterMaid · 17/11/2014 21:20

Pus, face.

Sparklingbrook · 17/11/2014 21:21

Really? I have never heard that before. I thought pus was the stuff in spots.

LovleyRitaMeterMaid · 17/11/2014 21:23

Yup, pus in spots, pus as in face.

Hth

Sparklingbrook · 17/11/2014 21:24

No it doesn't help much. Confused Never mind eh?

LovleyRitaMeterMaid · 17/11/2014 21:26

Ok....

Carrierpenguin · 17/11/2014 21:29

Yanbu, it's a load of shit. I can't stand geldof and his hypocrisy. He's preaching to us? I'm still upset about Peaches.

Carrierpenguin · 17/11/2014 21:30

He ought to be working with drugs and addiction charities surely and leave ebola to msf etc. Or are drug charities not sensational enough for him?
