Band Aid 2014.....Really?

Ok, I get that its a good cause but seriously?? ANOTHER rehash of that same song? Plus, Geldof has recruited One Direction for the new version Hmm

AIBU to think its time to "rip off the band aid" so to speak? The least they could do is write a new song...

My favorite version of the US one

DuchessofNorks · 08/11/2014 18:15

Sashh Hahaha!!!!

*HerBigChance I was thinking that too.... Didn't Bono throw a tantrum last time because they refused to give him the line??

I think this years version will be full of X factor "winners" and autotuners....

It always puzzles me when people criticise Live Aid.

It was the first of its kind and, at that time, no one knew just how corrupt Africa actually was. Yes, so Mariam siphoned off a lot to support his army, but a lot of people got the aid they needed, in the short term.

We learned so much about aid, how to raise it and how to ensure it is spent well. Without Live Aid, errors, egos and misappropriation and all, we wouldn't be in the position we are now, focussed smaller, self sustaining work alongside the big charities.

But I have my doubts - I probably won't recognise a single one of the performers this time round!

Iwantacampervan · 09/11/2014 19:35

I remember the first Band Aid single - it was out around the time of my 21st birthday and somewhere I have it (on vinyl of course). At the time I don't think anything like the record or Live Aid concert had been done before.
When I heard that One Direction might be involved I realised that they hadn't been born when the original was released!
I hope they use artists (I am careful not to say singers) with distinctive voices so we can tell them apart.

Rebecca2014 · 09/11/2014 19:37

Is this a joke?

The last one was shiiit. Love the original.

DuchessofNorks · 14/11/2014 17:03

Nope not a Joke Rebecca - I wish it was!!!

Nomama I completely agree with your point that it was revolutionary for its time and encouraged fundrasing on a completely new level. The song itself though, I just feel it is outdated!

I also feel I may not recognise half the people on the record. Maybe they should get the original back together or write a new one!!!

I don't like any versions of the song

DuchessofNorks · 14/11/2014 17:23

I can just about tolerate the original, but loathe the latest version. GOD knows how terrible the next one will sound.

No matter how much this if for charity, Geldof must certainly make his living off the back of it, as the Boomtown Rats are hardly one of history's all time greats.. and even the film The Wall is now virtually unheard of amongst todays younger generation.

YANBU to think they should write a new song. What does the line "feed the world" have to do with the ebola crisis?"

A VERY good point

What is all this talk of the original? Surely the most well known one was the 84/85 one (never can remember which it is) is that not the original?

GatoradeMeBitch · 14/11/2014 17:33

It always warrants mentioning on any Band Aid thread - Midge Ure waived his royalties, Geldof wouldn't waive his. He rakes it in everytime this song gets re-released. It's possibly a bigger money-spinner for him than his entire Boomtown Rats career...

PrincessOfChina · 14/11/2014 17:38

They are re-writing it I think? Or at least updating some of the lyrics.

I don't see the harm, the 80's version is the most enduring but raising money and awareness with a new generation is no bad thing. If they did something totally new it'd be bloody awful. Like that awful Barlow Sing thing. Awful.

AgentZigzag · 14/11/2014 17:49

YANBU, I can't believe Bob's still not got his hair cut f-ing and blinding at people not coughing up their due.

Nicely knitting together the celebrity pop ebola crisis, I came across this story about Amy Childs (Telegraph link) who thought ebola was a band Grin Grin

She was asked on the MOBO's red carpet 'have we done enough to prevent the spread of ebola?' and said 'I might be a big fan after tonight...I think it will be absolutely amazing' Grin

DuchessofNorks · 14/11/2014 18:28

Gatorade Amen.......

....and with that said, maybe he should calculate royalties gained to date and bloody well donate them to the cause himself Hmm

DuchessofNorks · 14/11/2014 19:22

Also.... has it really been 30 years since the original?? Woah!

GlacindaTheTroll · 14/11/2014 19:30

There is a band called Ebola and they've been around since the late 1990s.

Puffykins · 14/11/2014 19:37

Does it matter? It raised £8 million for the famine in Ethiopia. And as Bob has said, "it doesn't matter if it's a shit recording as long as people buy it." There are a LOT of One Direction fans out there, and God knows Sierra Leone needs help with the Ebola crisis. And money will help.

Updating of lyrics - that'll be mainly Feed Heal the World then...

I do remember the original, I would go round to the neighbours and play their copy on their record player as I liked it so much.

I suppose Geldof felt it was time for a rehash though - although if we're lucky we might go another 20 years until the next one.

I think the previous versions were 1984, 1989, 2009?

BertieBotts · 14/11/2014 22:43

The last one was the year before I had DS, I'm sure it was - 2007?

BertieBotts · 14/11/2014 22:44

Will they sing "cure the world" instead? That could be interesting.

ToniWol · 14/11/2014 22:44

Oops, just checked, it was 2004.
