Currys staff shouldn't get rude and call you an idiot if you don't buy their upsales and they should know the promotions that they have signs for

I'm really not sure how curys still exists, I only bought something from there as was on offer.

I had it reserved so expected to just rock up and collect it, I was wrong.

Waited for 15 mins for someone to serve me at the desk. Then when I said it was a tablet I was collecting they made me wait another 10 mins for their tablet "expert" to serve me.

He took ages on his computer, then disappear ed for 5 mins to get it. Then he came back and started on the hard sale of some "free" software that costs 80 but I can cancel it within 30 days and get my money back. I said no thanks, he got all assey saying I'd be an idiot not to get it and it makes no sense for me to say no. He was getting really rude and huffy that I said no. He got even worse when I didn't want to buy their cover or a case. He said unless I bought this software it wasn't safe to go on the Internet, liar.

Then when it came to pay I asked for the 20 voucher off,he said it didn't exist even though it is all over their shop with posters and applies to tablets only and he is supposedly the tablet expert. Took 4 members of staff for me to actually get the voucher applied. He was rude and nasty throughout.

I'm annoyed with myself for actually buying it after he was such a jerk. As I walked out I hit the unhappy buzzer several times.

I was in there buying a laptop. Turned out I used to teach the child who served me. She started hoing on sbout jow unfair I'd been sending her out once. I left.

toriuk · 04/11/2014 18:53

the unhappy buzzer was the only good thing in their shop. i hit it several times, i hope each one of them registered.

shocking they are still trading when most people here hate them.

john lewis really is worth paying more for.

I've never shopped in Currys/PC World but love the sound of the unhappy buzzer! I think I may make my own portable one and zizzz it in all the shops that make me unhappy.

Oh I'd love that too Grin

Elliptic5 · 04/11/2014 18:59

They've got an unhappy buzzer? Haven't been in one for years after such shit service I would rather pay more elsewhere (although my John Lewis does price match to Currys anyway).
I might visit just to hit the buzzer Grin

Hatespiders · 04/11/2014 19:01

They say that people now use them just for 'showroom shopping' to have a look at goods, then they go online and buy!! Serve them right.

youmakemydreams · 04/11/2014 19:04

I never shop there ever I never even look for things I need there. Entirely because PC World are so awful and their customer service are awful.
I had a laptop from them that went wrong within warranty they wouldn't even look at it. Kept telling me it was my fault. Ended up getting it looked at independently and handed them a copy of the report that said what the fault was and it wasn't user error it was something wrong with the laptop. Now this fault happened soon after getting it. It was out of warranty by the time anyone in pc world would even look at it. I was not giving up though and eventually got another laptop which was an upgrade as well after I wrote to a consumer page in a newspaper who contacted them. Funnily enough it was sorted in a matter of days when that happened after 9 months of getting nowhere.

When i was pregnant with DD we bought a washing machine from them, it arrived and the delivery guy dropped it, plumbed it in and then it wouldn't work. After much moaning they sent a second one that was faulty.

After many many phone calls I had enough and went in to the store I had originally ordered from - initially the manager was not too much help until I pointed out to him that my baby bump was already a week overdue and I was going to wait in the shop until either my washing machine was sorted or the baby came, which ever was soonest! After that he couldn't help me enough (or get me out of the shop quick enough)

toriuk · 04/11/2014 19:17

jh often wont price match as different retailer have different codes for exactly the same item or if its a discontinued item with limited avalibility.

I love the idea of the unhappy buzzer. Might just pop in, have a wander round and give it a few presses on my way out; make up for missed opportunities in the past.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 04/11/2014 19:57

They probably have to con as much as they can out of folk now - given their (well deserved) appalling reputation it's maybe the only way they can make any profit

I visited PC World (same company) with a tech-savvy friend who asked the staff member something about a computer's motherboard. Came the reply: "What's a motherboard?"

Say no more ...

8misskitty8 · 04/11/2014 20:20

Currys staff don't seem to be trained on anything really.
When i went to buy an integrated washing machine i wanted a hoover and not a hotpoint as IMO they are rubbish (my mum had one and it blew up and a family friend had one blow up and set fire to her kitchen ) Was told there was no difference in the machines as the same company made them (Not true ) Said i wanted a hoover and was told no I really need to buy another machine which was on offer and just under £1000 and would last longer than the £300 hoover. Really 3 times longer ?
He could see I wouldn't be swayed so booked the machine I wanted in then came the sales pitch.

With it being an integrated machine he installation fee was double a regular machine which they justified by saying they had to refit my cabinet door on it ! I said i would fit the cabinet door but they still wanted the full integrated machine install price. I refused to pay over £80 (£40 of which was to rescrew a door on ! ) and my father in law fitted it instead.

Don't get me started on the warranty, guaranteeing an engineer within a week and repair within 2 weeks is not exactly a brilliant warranty is it ? Took out the hoovers own warranty which was cheaper and only to cover the engineer and call out as you get 5 years free parts !

ihatethecold · 04/11/2014 20:31

This is why for kitchen appliances you should us AO.com.
They are a company that knows what the customer wants and needs when they are shelling out large sums of money.

nohysteriahere · 04/11/2014 20:38

I used to work for them, minimum wage, crap commission and flexible availability seven days a week.

For that you needed to be an expert on everything in store, with all the answers to every conceivable question that customers might ask, giving better customer service than supermarkets(I work in one now and the standard is lower). Customers have higher expectations in Currys which are harder to meet, this gives the perception that they are crap imho.

pointythings · 04/11/2014 20:47

I have never had a problem in the branch near us, but that could be because it's smallish, or because I'm a stroppy cow assertive, or a combination of the two. I work in IT too and as soon as I mention that with any IT purchase, they tend to back off and just give me what I want. Mind you, that's what I get pretty much everywhere.

I'd never buy a washing machine from them, though.

MovingOnUpMovingOnOut · 04/11/2014 20:52

Bunch of shysters they are.

toriuk · 05/11/2014 07:42

I understand its hard for them to know everything. I had ordered the item I just wanted to pick it up, not be treated like a shit on the pavement, not lied to and for them to know about the offer they have poster for in store.

I had a very similar experience at currys buying a tablet, the man serving me refused to talk to me and insisted on talking to my DH until my DH had a go at him, got annoyed when I wouldnt buy the anti virus and in the end I insisted he got someone else to serve me, which he was also rude about. I sent in a complaint and got a standard "apology" back. I refuse to go back there again.

CantBeBotheredThinking · 05/11/2014 07:54

I'm one of those who use them as a showroom to look at things then go and order online but it's their own fault I do that. I needed a new tumble dryer found one I liked so wanted to buy it but in store if I wanted it delivered within a reasonable time ie 30 days I needed to pay through the nose so I went home and checked the website and I could arrange for free delivery within 2 days. They take any opportunity to upsell and lie to do so I would much rather order through a system that doesn't allow that to happen.

Stupidhead · 05/11/2014 08:07

Wow! Complain! Write them a letter, tweet/FB and give them this link.

I've never had a problem, I know they get commissions on warrantees and when I've turned them down they've replied, 'I don't blame you'. I had to get a freezer and a washing machine there in the past year and haven't had a problem. Probably because DP looks like a serial killer though.

JulietBravoJuliet · 05/11/2014 08:12

As an ex Currys employee, it's a disciplinary offence if you DON'T badger every customer. Staff don't work on commission but to targets for the branch, and are taught to repeatedly question every customer. My old manager would pull you to one side after every sake and make you go through the whole conversation - why didn't they take the Whatever Happens cover? Why did you let them walk without Norton 360 and Cloud backup? Hated the job, hence I don't work or shop there anymore! Staff are largely untrained on products and very pressured into doing the hard sell.

SevenZarkSeven · 05/11/2014 08:16

I bought something from curry's 15 years ago.

On the basis of that experience I have never been back.

MrsRabbitsTwin · 05/11/2014 08:38

I got a laptop there a few years ago and the guy was all arsey about me not wanting the antivirus or the home insurance. He then insisted I needed my address and, since I needed the laptop before I went on holiday, I reluctantly gave him my details but asked NOT to be put on the marketing list for insurance.

Of course, he put me on the list anyway and it took me three goes (two e-mails and a phone call) to stop getting marketing.

I realise the staff must be told they have to do all this, but it must lose them loads of customers.

toriuk · 05/11/2014 08:45

They demanded my address before selling it to me, I panicked and gave them next doors :(

Its shocking they have any customers seeing how they behave, in many cases illegally.

Best story is the teacher who had an ex pupil having a go at her haha.

We went into our local electrical shop looking for a built-in cooker. We looked at the few they had on display, even looking at the back so DP could see how to fit it, and as we walked out to think about it, the shopowner yelled at us to 'go away and shop online then' accompanied by a few swears. (I didn't hear but dp did, and he stepped back in to ask if the owner thought that was a reasonable way to talk to customers who were thinking of buying? )

The shop has closed now.

DazzleU · 05/11/2014 09:17

I'm the same as ihatethecold and now go on line to ao.com.

That was after trying to buy a washing machine from Curries - there was a delay to deliver five days - then they delivered a smashed washing machine - they were in and out so fast - it had clearly been dropped. Further delay and another week - then had to be in for them to pick damaged one up only for next one they delivered had an electrical fault - so went through it all again and machine lasted less than a year.

In end it was weeks without a machine - there five us us - 3 dc at aged they were super messy. No car and no nearby laundrette - family decided they couldn't help despite later helping my sister who machine went so washing just piled up. It was really stressful - washing in clothes in the bath and then hoping they'd dry.

Next time it went - went to ao - they had a 9 kg machine which was so much better and years later still going strong - next day delivery - no fuss no drama and no delay.
