Yes, I concur, it's horrifying to think of anyone voting UKIP . But sadly I don't think all people vote with their heads. Adam Curtis in his excellent documentary series Century of the Self showed how it is unfortunately the swing voters that decide elections and how little it has to do with real political issues (Episode 4 in the series focuses on that: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Century_of_the_Self)
He also showed how political parties create enemies to win votes in the series The Power of Nightmares and how malleable we are (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Power_of_Nightmares).
Unfortunately, not all people want facts, it's much easier to decide allegiances or dislikes based on tabloid or news headlines (I had a kitchen fitter who began each morning by reading the Daily Mail before starting work and then spent the rest of the day quoting the so called "news" stories as evidence of the evils of muslims and bulgarians — I'm pretty sure I know which way he's voting in May). In reality, there's a wealth of information out there that we could use to gain some insight into what any party tells us is the "truth". It took one second to find the following article debunking UKIP mantras:

I don't want this current government and only if I had a lobotomy might it be possible to persuade me to vote UKIP. I always vote tactically, no other choice at present.
