To think my friend is being way to serious about this?

Dd is 5 and can't get the word ' animal' right. She says aminal.
I find it cute and do correct her but gently remind her and she has a think about it and when she says it slowly she gets it right.
But like I said I find it cute and am guessing she will grow out of it.

Df was round earlier and dd mentioned something about animals but said it the wrong way and df told her she said it wrong but dd wasn't really listening as she was running about with the puppy.
Anyway df had a bit of a go at me about how can I let her talk like that kids will make fun of her , do I not care? You get the picture.
I told her to lighten up dd would be fine and changed the subject. But when she left she was still moody.

Aibu to think she's a kid she'll grow out of it?

I work in early years and it's not unusual at all, I have never known a 4/5 year old to tease another child for pronunciation. The aminal variant is a common one, as is lellow. Grin

nevercackle · 03/11/2014 20:14

I said hostipal in a job interview for a a job in a hostipal a couple of years ago.

ds2 says cargidan, and I deliberately don't correct him. he knows what it should be. it will be a shame when he stops saying it wrong.

headinhands · 03/11/2014 20:15

gemzy sekleton is fine (autocorrect having a coronary at that) but adults saying skellington does grate me.

Abra1d · 03/11/2014 20:16

My daughter said hoppypitomus instead of hippopotamus until she was about eight and I couldn't bring myself to make her say it properly.

nevercackle · 03/11/2014 20:19

ds1 used to suffer from 'fish and noodles' not pins and needles.Grin

Ingles2 · 03/11/2014 20:28

I wonder what she was getting so antsy about? most littlies make some pronunciation mistakes silly mare...
1 of mine, used to say fairy for ferry.. and hotail instead of hotel.. we were laughing about it just this morning.

velocity1 · 03/11/2014 20:28

My grown up son is still called Maffoo in this house, because his big sister couldn't say his name when he was born. She can say it now, but we still use Maffoo, just because it annoys him Grin

For what it's worth, as a parent of DC's with speech and language delays, I didn't think it was ever worth getting stressed about their muddled words,I was always just happy they spoke at all

WorldWildWifeFund · 03/11/2014 20:31

Adullts in my house say aminal just for fun (no kids here). Usually when talking to the pets.

My dd is 6 and says aminal rather than animal. But she does have a slight speech issue. We don't force the issue but do always repeat the word correctly after in the hope it catches on. My ds is 9 and still says paft instead of path. He has fantastic speech and has from a very young age. He can read extremely well and sounds out long words confidently, but for some reason that one simple word is never said right. Kids are odd things. Smile
Your friend was a bit ott tbh. I don't think it's something kids pick up on and taunt over and it's likely to be something she grows out of.

mrstiggy · 03/11/2014 20:45

Oh and yes to the kids pronunciation becoming the expected one in families. Neither I or DH could say vanilla for ages after ds called it valinna as a toddler. You don't even notice it after a while.

UsedtobeFeckless · 03/11/2014 21:05

Ignore your mate - she's a loon ... Grin

Mine had a whole raft of mispronunceations we all remember with great fondness - Aminals, efferlent, underbrella, fuddered egg ... DS1 used to call dandelions blow flowers! Happy days!

AyMamita · 03/11/2014 21:17

YANBU. There are loads of adults who say things like chimley and esculator and pecifically and none of them seem to be social outcasts!

mrspremise · 03/11/2014 21:21

My DS, now 10, called coat hangers 'sookeydookeys' until he was 3 God only knows why He doesn't do it anymore, has never been bullied and won a writing prize at school last year humblebrag? Blush Grin

duplodon · 03/11/2014 21:24

My sister is a speech therapist and her son is five and says aminal and hopsital and she says errors like this are very common. Shrug.

elQuintoConyo · 03/11/2014 22:04

Apart from 'nuculer'for nuclear, there isn't anything wrong with mispronoucing things.

I still say armbows (elbows), dressing garden (dressing gown) and geenganman (greengrocer, of course!)

DS was pointing out Draclia to our guests on Saturday night, although he had noproblem with Frankenstein.

I was very sad when one day he asked for Spongebob on tv rather than SpoBo. I miss Spobo.

SistersOfPercy · 03/11/2014 23:39

Oh elquinto you've just reminded me of another, ds had dressing downs not dressing gowns. That's another one we all still use today.

sykadelic · 04/11/2014 00:12

I think the friend probably freaked out a little bit, but I do think YABU to not correct her like you would say "please" and "thank you" when your kids forget to use manners.

She might forget from time to time but I do think it's bad not to correct them and encourage poor speaking just because you think it's cute.

WalkingInMemphis · 04/11/2014 00:23

DS2 is 4 and says 'aminal' and 'lellow' and 'excavator' for escalator.

His vocabulary is excellent for his age but he also still uses lots of words (verbs?) incorrectly. We get lots of 'Mummy I wented to the park', 'I goned on the swing', 'I walked-ed to school', 'I seed my friend' and so on.

It's very cute, and I don't correct but will repeat it back correctly 'Oh really, so you saw your friend?'

It will come, they won't still be speaking like this when they're 30!

cricketpitch · 04/11/2014 00:25

We never corrected them. Their speech was a delight - and like many PPs here we still use some of their words. (Manganzine, sukermarket, par cark, bikkit, among others. And both mine said aminal. Both pronounce these words in standard English now. It is part of growing up. Correcting them would blocks their fluency.

UterusUterusGhali · 04/11/2014 00:32

Your friend, for example, is a twat.

ChippingInAutumnLover · 04/11/2014 00:37

YABU very very U...

...if you don't make sure you have video clips of it! They grow out if it far too quickly and in no time at all you forget most of the little things.

If I'm tired so most of the time then we often go into the Par Cark.

Tell your friend to get on her Bike

Darkandstormynight · 04/11/2014 01:42

She was BU. Does she have kids? We corrected too, but WE still call batteries "badderdries", and dc is 12. I see it as a sweet childhood thing. Your friend is being a drama queen.

headinhands · 04/11/2014 06:55

'Mugit' is music, 'fwash' is squash, 'pop pop pops' are coco pops here.

WalkingInMemphis · 04/11/2014 07:29

Headinhands - we have Coco Pox here. Sounds like a nasty disease!
