to not have turkey on christmas day as its over priced

We are planning on having sirloin of beef instead. It is a fraction of the price of a christmas turkey. I am going to go out to Tescos on boxing day to see if we can buy and freeze a turkey on the 26th.

To be totally honest, I'd never heard of a bombe until I saw that turkey one the other day.

I had to google the word because I thought it was a typo and they meant 'bomb' Blush

ooerrmissus · 27/10/2014 21:14

DH has had a sneak preview of the Morrisons Turkey Bombe and says it is very good and practical as easy to serve.

But if you don't like turkey have something else. We always have beef.

WorraLiberty · 27/10/2014 21:14

And exploding turkey would be so much more exciting.

SanityClause · 27/10/2014 21:15

We always have guinea fowl, now. It's like chicken, but a bit gamier. We have all the traditional Turkey trimmings, because everyone lin the family likes them.

I have had Turkey in the past, but I don't like it much, and we have had goose, but it's not popular enough to justify the cost, or to feel like a special Christmas meal.

ReallyTired · 27/10/2014 21:15

I want a high quality eating experience on Christmas day. Hence I am not planning to buy frozen cheap turkey from lidl or Aldi. It is perfectly possible to get a high quality piece of beef that can easily feed eight people with lots of left overs for a fraction of the price of a premium turkey.

Last year I bought a tesco's finest turkey on boxing day for £7.99. I put it in the freezer and ate it in January. It was lovely.

Thanks ooerrmissus, that sounds promising.

Mintyy · 27/10/2014 21:17

Well you seem to have it all planned and your reasons sorted op.

Can't think why you posted tbh.

SanityClause · 27/10/2014 21:18

I'm australian, and we always had a ham at Christmas. It's great actually, because it's lovely as leftovers - sandwiches, ham and eggs, ham and pea soup. Mmmmm!

Catsmamma · 27/10/2014 21:21

dh got several complete bargains on Christmas Eve...he sees it as his hunter gatherer duties to go out and try to get a marked down slab of festive protein

so hold your nerve and go out about three thirty!

Unless of course you already have it planned Hmm

LRDtheFeministDragon · 27/10/2014 21:22

I can see guinea-fowl would be nice. When I was growing up we always had pheasant, so for me that's Christmassy. Ham is nice too, with cloves in.

AlleyCat11 · 27/10/2014 21:25

We get an organic chicken. Only the men eat meat, so we don't need a turkey. Chicken is rarely eaten here, so it's still a treat. Red meat is rarely on the menu either, but we do a spiced beef on Boxing Day. The thought of a leftover turkey carcass in the fridge... Yuck! Most supermarket turkeys are pumped up anyway, quantity over quality.

PamShoo · 27/10/2014 21:30

Yanbu of course! In this house we have anything BUT Turkey - beef, chicken, ham, duck!
If you //want// turkey, shop around maybe, it can't be overpriced everywhere..

Idontseeanysontarans · 27/10/2014 22:19

Try local farmers for a decently priced turkey. My IL's reared and sold Christmas turkeys for very little for years blocks out memories of plucking dozens of dead birds in a shed.
They were huge, well loved and tasty Smile

2kidsintow · 27/10/2014 22:21

We either get a mahoosive chicken (or more than one if we want lots of leftovers and who wouldn't?) or a turkey crown for about £11 from the butchers. No waste, all meat. Yum.

youareallbonkers · 27/10/2014 22:22

A frozen turkey is only a few quid, beef is much pricier. But eat what you want

Carrierpenguin · 27/10/2014 22:24

Yabu. It isn't over priced, the price reflects the quality of life the bird had, ie a £12 from Aldi and lidl will have had a torturous life. I'd rather go without than have that (and I will go without).

HolgerDanske · 27/10/2014 22:26

Ohhh I love turkey. It isn't really christmas without it. And I love my midnight feast of turkey sandwiches even more!

But YANBU to have whatever you like for Christmas Smile

ClashCityRocker · 27/10/2014 22:27

Oh I love turkey.

And I cook it well, whereas I always seem to murder beef.

It's insane how much they push the price up at christmas.

BaffledSomeMore · 27/10/2014 22:28

We have duck or goose.

VoyagerII · 27/10/2014 22:29

I stopped buying a christmas turkey, it was a nightmare. Too big (we don't have loads for xmas dinner), a worry to make sure it's cooked right, and dealing with the scary bags of horror bits and then the huge carcass afterwards. Ugh.

I get free range nice turkey steaks and fry them up with garlic and tarragon, loads less hassle and really nice with all the xmas veg and stuff.

If anyone doesn't like my non-traditional style, they can buy, lug home and roast a turkey themselves.

WorraLiberty · 27/10/2014 22:35

I didn't like turkey for years but ate it 'because it was Christmas'.

Then one year, I didn't have enough room in the freezer for the normal frozen turkey, so I bought a fresh turkey crown.

Omg the difference in taste and moisture was amazing. We loved it as it tasted completely different to what we were used to.

So from then on, it was a small turkey crown and a honey roast gammon.

There was very little wasted turkey too (if any at all).

steff13 · 27/10/2014 22:38

We have gammon.

Michael Gammon?

We have ham. Turkey is for Thanksgiving. I'm very surprised turkey is more expensive than sirloin, there. Beef is generally the most expensive here.

littlemoot · 27/10/2014 22:38

lots of lovely ideas. i'll have to break it to them gently they may not be having a traditional turkey ...

OneDayWhenIGrowUp · 27/10/2014 22:39

YANBUAA. I'm having duck this year :-) much tastier. I don't think Turkey is ''overpriced'' though. As someone else alluded to, living things aren't meant to be cheap.

pumpkinsweetie · 27/10/2014 22:40

I believe in eat what you want for Christmas dinner, not what society expects us to eat!
We sometimes have turkey and we sometimes have Duck, I personally find too much turkey gets wasted or we simply get bored of the leftovers, so I guess money is wasted here, hoping to convince dh into duck this year Wink
