I don't have a mobile phone, never have. They terrify me. But I accept that the time has come where I need to bite the bullet and get one. I've been into the phone shop a couple of times and it all just makes my ears bleed. I have no idea what any of any of it means. It's like I've landed on Mars.

So I came up with a cunning plan. I went to an accessories shop and bought a phone cover that I love and will go to the phone shop tomorrow and ask for a phone to fit it. DH thinks I'm bonkers.

AIBU?

Yes you are bonkers. But in a delightful way :o

cherrybombxo · 27/10/2014 14:42

If you genuinely don't care what you end up with, no YANBU. It's no different to eeny meeny miny mo.

Just make sure it's not for the iPhone 6, as you'll be paying through the nose for something you don't want or need Wink

JustASimpleSpongeCake · 27/10/2014 14:42

YABU, a bit. What cover have you bought? You could end up with a brand spanking top of the range iPhone and a 70/month contract to boot.

It would have been far easier to go into a phone shop and clearly state what you need it for. Calling, texting, internet browsing?

MassaAttack · 27/10/2014 14:43

Many covers come in different sizes and shapes to fit different phones you loon

Get the nicest Android you can afford. You won't regret it :)

JustScreamNobHurts · 27/10/2014 14:45

Based on your choice of username I am strongly on your dh's side. You seem to have a lackadaisical relationship with the realitys of life Grin

Write the amount you want to spend as a one off down.
Write the amount you'd want to spend on a contract down
Write what you'd be willing to spend on Pay as You Go per week/moth down.

Then write what stuff you want from the phone
Where you'll mostly carry it
How it will be used.

Then. Go into down. Return the phone case.

Then go into a phone shop and buy a phone like a grown up.

Mascaramascara1 · 27/10/2014 14:49

Only if money is no object.

You might have picked the case to the new all singing and dancing £600 phone after all Hmm

Nomama · 27/10/2014 14:52

I went in and said 'that one, the one with the big screen, now!'

Then took the one they had in stock that was the closest.

Weird thing, it'll take me years to get the swing of it. But it does do phone calls and I can see who is calling me!

It costs me £12.40 a month.

trikken · 27/10/2014 14:52

I'd go into a shop and try a few out. No point getting a really nice but complicated one that you end up hating just cos it fitted the case.

ScarletFever · 27/10/2014 14:54

exactly what JustScreamNobHurts said

thats like saying "i want a blue car" and buying the first car that you see in blue - if its a jag, or a corsa!

v.v.v.v.v.v silly Smile

GratefulHead · 27/10/2014 14:55

I want you to be my friend...,I love you already. What phone cover have you got? Most modern phones are fine and will do whatever you need them to.

louloudoodah · 27/10/2014 14:57

Does it say on the packet what phone is for?

HedgehogsDontBite · 27/10/2014 15:02

I bought a ladybird cover. It's very pretty.

I'm getting a phone because my occupational therapist told me to get one. She's then going to go all cyberman on it so it's autistic friendly. The software is hospital grade for cognitive impairments and apparently the make of host phone doesn't matter.

Spindarella · 27/10/2014 15:02

My mum does something like this, bounds into and just picks one that she likes the look of. No idea about newtwork coverage, what's included or anything. She's always happy with what she gets and I suspect you will be too. BUT YOU ARE BOTH BONKERS!

(also, please tell us what phone it is, I'm secretly hoping it's an iphone 6 rather than a Nokia 3310).

skylark2 · 27/10/2014 15:09

I think you're bonkers. Covers often only fit one model of phone and it could be hundreds of pounds on a contract you neither want nor need.

You'd have been far better off walking into the store and buying the cheapest PAYG one they have.

That's what I did. I've topped my phone up twice in the ten years I've owned one. I think the phone cost £20.

BertieBotts · 27/10/2014 15:13

Haha, brilliant Grin

Do tell us which you end up with? Does the cover not say something on the packet? Samsung, HTC, etc?

Icimoi · 27/10/2014 15:17

If you're OT has plans for it, can't she suggest what would be the best one for those purposes? It sounds like, at the very least, she is envisaging a smartphone.

blackcoffeeplease · 27/10/2014 15:17

I love this OP. It has made me laugh a lot. Grin Agreed w/ Bertie - does it not have anything on the packet which says the phone its for? If it's huge then it's probably an iPad...

2minsofyourtime · 27/10/2014 15:19

But what if the phone turns out to cost loads!

yellowdinosauragain · 27/10/2014 15:19

I very nearly got an iPhone as my first smartphone because I'd found a pretty cover so I can't really slag you off... However I did realise in time that paying £10 extra a month on the contract for a phone that was less suited to what I needed was daft.

I like your style though :o

HedgehogsDontBite · 27/10/2014 15:29

She did mention something about a 'smartphone'. I take it that means something other than 'a nice looking phone'Blush.

JustScreamNobHurts · 27/10/2014 15:31

In that case op, I'd advise you get the most up to date samsung or iPhone you can afford. Basically as they are two of the most popular brands the soft wares will usually be kept compatible.

I friend of mine has similar software and switched from an HTC to an iPhone as it was resulted in less issues Smile

Spindarella · 27/10/2014 15:33

Don't worry too much OP, most phones these days are smart phones and if you say the software matches what the hospital need it to do then you'll be fine.

This is actually a really lovely thread - you've brought a smile to my face anyway Smile

Spindarella · 27/10/2014 15:36

JustScreamNobHurts

I think it's the version of Android/ios/windowsphone that matters - OP has said the hopsital has said the phone brand doesn't matter and that her therapist will set it all up.

Good luck OP!

blackcoffeeplease · 27/10/2014 15:36

So its not going to be your basic bog standard Nokia then Grin
The 1st photo is a samsung galaxy case, the 2nd is an iphone case. This seems stupid but, does it look like any of those?

JustScreamNobHurts · 27/10/2014 15:41

That's what I meant. But for some reason her OT struggled with the HTC model she had Smile, I suggested Samsung or Apple for simplicities sake.
