to think this is a perfectly acceptable way of choosing a new phone?

I don't have a mobile phone, never have. They terrify me. But I accept that the time has come where I need to bite the bullet and get one. I've been into the phone shop a couple of times and it all just makes my ears bleed. I have no idea what any of any of it means. It's like I've landed on Mars.

So I came up with a cunning plan. I went to an accessories shop and bought a phone cover that I love and will go to the phone shop tomorrow and ask for a phone to fit it. DH thinks I'm bonkers.

AIBU?

Just work out what you want the phone to do . Some sales people can be a bit ott like the guy in the Vodafone store who tried to sell my elderly father a new i phone and contract as it would be better for him, although he is lucky to spend 10 a month on payg and cant send a text mesg Angry

Bunbaker · 27/10/2014 15:47

Can you take someone who knows about mobile phones with you when you go and buy one?

If you really don't understand about mobile phones - different brands and different contracts, you will be utterly bamboozled by the choices available.

You need to find out beforehand what you need to be able to do with the phone. Is it just for calls and texting? Will you need access to the internet? What apps do you need?

HedgehogsDontBite · 27/10/2014 15:49

It sort of looks like that second picture.

I now suspect that a better plan is to take it back and instead bribe next-door's teenager with promises of McDonald's and borrow him for the afternoon.

Legionofboom · 27/10/2014 15:58

I feel your pain. I love lots of technology but I hate mobile phones.

The software is hospital grade for cognitive impairments and apparently the make of host phone doesn't matter

I think this might be misleading. I have a very basic phone that makes calls and sends texts but little more. My phone would not run the software you are talking about.

I think you need to get help from next door's teenager. The make of the phone may be irrelevant but I suspect that you need a smartphone.

WineWineWine · 27/10/2014 16:01

I think you need help to choose the most appropriate phone for your needs.
Choosing by buying the cover is not wise.
Not sure what software your OT was planning on putting on it, but if it's an app, then it will probably be fine on most phones.

BertieBotts · 27/10/2014 16:01

The second picture is an iPhone, if it's that sort of squareish shape then you'll be fine. iPhone is easiest to use with no issues and software tends to just work on it whereas with android it can require more setup.

If it has a big touch screen then it's 99% chance it's a smartphone.

ChillingGrinBloodLover · 27/10/2014 16:08

Hedgehogs

What phone does your husband have?

You are going to need a lot of help with it, so if you could get the same as him that would make life easier.

Taking the teen next door will most likely be like taking the dog to the butchers. Not A Good Idea.

ChillingGrinBloodLover · 27/10/2014 16:09

I wonder if the 'software' the OT has is mac and android compatible though? That could be a big determining factor and one the OP needs to check before buying anything.

Bunbaker · 27/10/2014 16:16

Sensible point Chilling.

Hedgehogs I think you need more information from your OT before you buy a phone. I think the OT presumes you already understand how smartphones work.

Captainweasel · 27/10/2014 16:24

Could you ask your ot for advice?

HedgehogsDontBite · 27/10/2014 16:26

DD has had this software for a while now. Apparently it was first provided already installed on a 'motorola' and they've just installed it on her new 'galaxy'. Can anyone translate that to English?

OP posts:
Notmeagain1 · 27/10/2014 16:27

I have an LG-G2 and love it. Its very simple and all I ever use anymore. Most everyone ever hears about is the I-phone or Samsung galaxy....but there are pther options . you can google cell phones ratings and see what the reviews say.

Just an idea

JustScreamNobHurts · 27/10/2014 16:32

Your dd had a phone by the brand Motorola.

She now currently has a Galaxy, which is a type of phone made by the brand Samsung. So any Samsung smartphone that is around two years in the making will cope fine with the hospital software.

Bunbaker · 27/10/2014 16:34

Which version of the Galaxy range? Ace, S2, S3, S4, S5?

Are you really this clueless about mobile phones? Genuine question BTW, not a dig.

RandomFriend · 27/10/2014 16:45

Your OP made me smile. Definitely bonkers!

Borrow the teen next door after you have bought the phone to show you what you can do with it. That will save you a lot of time.

BuilderMammy · 27/10/2014 17:15

God, I'd love a Nokia 3310 again! I hate smartphones.

Definitely do the writing it all down thing. Whatever you get, you'll be able to find a nice cover for it afterwards.

BertieBotts · 27/10/2014 18:00

It will be fine. Motorola and Samsung's Galaxy range are both android phones, so they'll run android software.

It sounds like she's going to set it all up for you, so I'm not sure why posters are being all handwringy about it.

She said "The make of host phone doesn't matter", I would take that to understand that it will run on any of the top three smartphone platforms, Apple, Android and Windows phone.

Moghedien · 27/10/2014 18:05

That software sounds brilliant. Hope you get on well with it. If you do get to choose a phone I'd recommend a nokia, apparently they're known for being sturdy. I've always found them easy to use.

Pipbin · 27/10/2014 18:12

If you do get to choose a phone I'd recommend a nokia

Nokia are now owned by Microsoft who are going to drop the name soon, I think. Therefore there will soon be no more Nokia phones.

LineRunner · 27/10/2014 18:14

I'm on Giff Gaff, £7.50 a month. DD and DS are too, so we call each other for free. Unlimited texts to anyone.

LineRunner · 27/10/2014 18:15

But you need an UNLOCKED phone, OP.

ZingOfSeven · 27/10/2014 18:15

Grin Grin Grin Grin

it's the upgraded Cinderella story!

BertieBotts · 27/10/2014 18:18

Or O2. Giff gaff runs on O2 so any O2 locked phone works with it. But don't complicate things - walk into the shop, show them the case and ask.

I wouldn't go with a Nokia, Nokia phones run Windows and although I said I thought the software would work on it, android and apple are more certain. Almost any brand of smartphone apart from Nokia will be android, iPhone is Apple.

NeedsAsockamnesty · 27/10/2014 18:32

That's exactly how I picked mine op as far as I'm concerned its the mdt sensible way to do if.
