To think toddlers don't need shoes to go with each outfit

DS has 3 pairs of shoes 1 white adidas trainers 1 pair of smart-ish navy boots and 1 pair of wellys for park/garden/walks. MIL thinks he needs more shoes as the shoes he has don't go with everything she wants to buy him brown boots and blue trainers I said no as I don't see the need for it at all I think 3 pairs is plenty and more than some kids have. She is now totally offended that I've refused her kind offer and saying I'm ungrateful. I just don't see the need for it and don't need yet more shoes to store I did tell her he's growing out of his current clothes size and if she was looking for something to buy he needs everything except shoes to which she told DP that I'm being bossy.

So hit me should I have just said yes to the shoes? I wasn't rude just said he doesn't need anymore shoes she said they don't go with his clothes-yes they do-- I said he's growing out of his clothes so if you want to buy him something you could get him clothes he needs everything. MIL and I usually get along really well I like her but think she's a bit flashy and that's not really me. DP would happily sort it out but I prefer to deal with her myself through the good and the bad she's usually very reasonable.

I would have said, thank you, and let her buy the shoes.

We only ever have 2 pairs for DS at a time. Usually one blue pair of trainers and one brown pair of shoes. Seems to work!

TheHorseHasBolted · 25/10/2014 19:37

Glad she's getting the jeans instead, more shoes seems pointless to me. My boys usually had one pair of Clarks shoes and one pair of either wellies or sandals, whichever was more useful for the time of year, at that age.

Discobugsacha · 25/10/2014 19:38

I do try to match shoes to outfits but I only buy about 3 pairs at a time too. I think if you have a pair of dr martens, a pair of converse and a Mary Jane style then you have enough to match all outfits! Plus wellies!

I HATE clarks shoes though, they are so ugly, and I really think it's a big con the way parents are convinced to only buy shoes from there. It is really easy to learn how to fit children's shoes. Look online, buy a shoe Measure and boycott clarks!

DS is 2.8 and a size 9 so he grows pretty fast. I just don't see the need for it I would have let her buy them if she really wanted to but we usually get on really well and I thought she wouldn't have minded me saying he doesn't need shoes he needs clothes. I just spent £50 in Clarks outlet and sports direct 3 weeks ago on boots and trainers and £10 yesterday on the wellys so his current shoes are brand new. I was due to buy new clothes next week when I get the child benefit so I seen it as a perfect opportunity to save some much needed pennies since she was keen to buy.

shoes are a pain for MIL to buy in that she would have to take ds along to get them fitted. Clothes you can just tell here the size.

Mind you as my MIL has never spent more than £5 a year on her grandkids I do feel slightly jealous!

Artandco · 25/10/2014 20:35

Kiki - wow! Ds1 is 4 1/2 and only just moving into size 9 shoe!

Purplepoodle · 25/10/2014 20:58

Omg ds3 is 2 and has one par of shoes, ds2 is 3 and has pair smart trainers and pair of Wellies.

StripyBanana · 25/10/2014 21:04

My daughter started at size 5, age 1. Now nearly 5 years later she is size 12.

That's 15 shoe sizes in 5 years. We check every few months when small. Cant imagine them only growing one size in a whole year?!

StillSquirrelling · 25/10/2014 21:18

My DS (3 next week) has three pairs of wellies (not sure why - he only needs two pairs, one for home and one for nursery), a pair of 'goes with most clothes' Clarks leather shoes and a pair of Crocs. He occasionally dons a pair of either of his big sister's cast offs if he fancies it (he particularly loves a pair of pink and silver sparkly Hello Kitty trainers at the moment).

DD1 (almost 7) has a pair of school shoes, a pair of Crocs, a pair of wellies and she really does need a pair of 'home' shoes or trainers. I also buy the girls a pair of boots for the winter so will get her some of those soon. She also has a pair of cheap Sainsburys party shoes. I think she might have some flipflops somewhere too.

DD2 (5) has a pair of school shoes, a pair of Crocs, a pair of wellies, a pair of boots, a pair of party shoes and a pair of massively overpriced Lelli Kelly's (that I made her buy herself from birthday money as I refuse to pay that amount of money for a pair of children's 'fashion' pumps.

Oops, forgot to close my parentheses Blush

StillSquirrelling · 25/10/2014 21:21

Stripy DD2 has really small feet and they don't grow very often. She has often lasted an entire year in the same size. She started of with a 3.5 when she was 1 and now is still only a size 10 at the age of 5.5. In fact DS (2.5 yrs her junior) has the same size feet as her!

ShadyMyLady · 25/10/2014 21:25

I always start by saying each dc will only have 2 pairs of shoes at any one time. Unfortunately it never works out that way.

Ds 18mo - vans, adidas hi tops, next smart pumps, wellies
Dd2 4yo - converse, ugg style boots, timberland boots, smart party shoes, crocs, wellies, school shoes
Dd1 10yo - vans, converse, timberland boots, smart black pumps, flip flops x 2, school shoes

And that's average. I think I have a slight problem Blush.

I've also been looking at some other winter boots for both dd's.

hettie · 25/10/2014 22:40

BonkersGrin.. Until recently both of mine have only ever had one paper of shoes (sandals or crocs in summer) and wellies.... They now have to have separate school shoes which I find annoying.. I can't bare needless consumption (but that probably makes me reactionary old hippie Wink)
