To be slightly cross at my hairdresser

So i had the full works done at a new hairdresser £60, and i bought some products. Total was £95. I paid with a card and gave him £10 cash as a tip as he had done a splendid head massage while washing. He wasn't pleased... Am i out the loop here because it wasn't enough or should you not tip a hairdresser anymore???

Not pleased with ten quid! Shock
Tough. I only give a fiver and that's enough when I've just spent £75 getting my hair done.

£10 is more than generous. What a greedy twunt he is.

NaiceNickname · 25/10/2014 13:32

He actually showed his displeasure at receiving more than a 10% tip? I'd have snatched it back out of his hand, cheeky git.

Hamandcheesesarnie2 · 25/10/2014 13:32

As of 6 months ago I stopped tipping altogether Blush

Costs me a bomb for a cut and colour and they now charge to straighten so I am not then paying another £5 on top. Yes I feel awkward at the till and I know she is waiting but its not happening anymore. I mentally beat myself up after I have left the shop and know doubt she is mentally flicking a v sign at my back but I am standing firm. She is being paid to do her job.

passmethewineplease · 25/10/2014 13:33

How do you know he wasn't pleased?

What did he say/do?

When I worked in a salon as a junior I was grateful for a quid. I didn't expect it really but then I'm not a tipper anyway.

BingoBonkers · 25/10/2014 13:34

I would take my custom and tips somewhere else!

Gunpowder · 25/10/2014 13:35

I think that's generous. Are you sure he was pissed off?

ChillingGrinBloodLover · 25/10/2014 13:36

He'd love me. I don't tip. It's an American thing and it needs stomping out, not encouraging. The salons charge enough to pay their staff properly.

TheBuskersDog · 25/10/2014 13:36

How did he show his displeasure? He should be grateful to get a tip at all.

I don't understand why we are expected to tip hairdressers but not plumbers or anyone else who provides a service.

DealForTheKids · 25/10/2014 13:37

I've had them get hacked off when I ask to tip via the card machine (presumably they lose out on a bit or don't get to pocket it direct) but 10 in cash is more than generous!

Unless it would cause even more issues I'd vote with your feet.

Iliveinalighthousewiththeghost · 25/10/2014 13:38

£10.00 is more than generous.
I feel like a right scrouge now.

I only leave about £1 tip when I get my eye brows done. but if thyey got that off everyone though they'd be okay.
£3 Tip when I get my nails done.
and about £5 tip at the hair dressers.

Fairylea · 25/10/2014 13:39

How do you know he wasn't pleased?

£10 is more than enough!

mommy2ash · 25/10/2014 13:42

how do you know he wasn't pleased. I refuse to tip. it's a custom that should only be used when the staff need their wages to be made up by tips and the prices are cheaper for customers because of this. I think hairdressers charge extortionate prices so I wouldn't feel the need to. h started doing my hair myself for ten euros i could buy enough product to do my hair for a year at a salon shop

AccidentallyInLove · 25/10/2014 13:43

That's a massive tip. I tip about £2 each time. I couldn't afford to tip more every time.
You were more than generous.

AntiDistinctlyMinty · 25/10/2014 13:51

I've never tipped my hairdresser. Is this a thing now? I can only just afford to get my hair done (I went four years without setting foot in the salon), add an extra fiver and it's a no go.

Gunpowder · 25/10/2014 13:55

I usually do 10-20% if I'm happy, depending on what's easiest to round up to. I usually give the junior a quid or two as well if they've washed my hair/got coffee.

My hairdresser said they are happy to get anything but they don't expect it at all, although one lady gave her 20p and she was slightly offended... Grin

PotOfYoghurt · 25/10/2014 13:55

I've never even thought to tip in a salon. I go to a large chain one, and my stylist is always rather cheerful when I say goodbye. It's not really the done thing where I'm from.

Gunpowder · 25/10/2014 13:56

Anti I think they'd much rather not be tipped and keep you as a client. Smile

PourquoiTuGachesTaVie · 25/10/2014 14:01

I only tip for things that cost under a tenner, and even then I usually just tell them to keep the change or round up to the nearest pound. Anyone who showed displeasure at the amount I'd tipped (or not) wouldn't get my custom again. If they want more.money they should change more, then ill decide if it's worth the extra expense. If I were rich enough I'd tip everyone but unfortunately I'm not.

Wishfulmakeupping · 25/10/2014 14:04

Are you sure he wasn't pleased with it? That's really generous I pay about the same and only ever tip a couple of quid fiver max if its Xmas :)

LokiBear · 25/10/2014 14:05

I never tip my hair dresser. However, at my salon the hair dresser takes you to the reception desk, thanks you for your custom and leaves you in the care of the receptionist. Very odd that a hairdresser would turn their nose up at 10 quid.

LovleyRitaMeterMaid · 25/10/2014 14:07

If my from costs £12 what tip should I leave?

skylark2 · 25/10/2014 14:09

I've never tipped a hairdresser.

But then I don't go (hair I can sit on) and DD's favourite is the local barber which has branched out a bit and now has a couple of seats for ladies in the back room.

Dinopaws1987 · 25/10/2014 14:09

Yanbu

Greedy idiot!

I don't tip anyone anymore, I'm too skint! And i refuse to be embarrassed Grin
