to think the sodding school should replace the sodding PE kit

My DS started school in the summer and parents were asked to supply a PE kit in the first week. In the registration days we were also told that the PE kit would stay in school to save kids forgetting to bring them PE days etc etc.

Got a post it note in DS's book bag 2/3 weeks ago saying that he had no trainers in his PE bag, I spoke to teacher and pointed out that they must be somewhere as my DS has not brought them home, teacher said she would check again and if she didnt come across them she would let me know. Time passed I forgot about it until DS pipes up last night that he has NO PE kit at all, its all gone!

I have a number of mums from the school on my twitter so had kindly tweeted them to ask them to check their kids bags to see if they had mistakeingly took my DS's things, now the school he attends have their own twitter account to remind us of dates etc, well my DS's teacher runs this account so I get a private message from her saying "I told you a number of weeks ago that DS has no trainers and I know nothing about the PE kit as I dont take the class for PE, if its important please come into school and check for yourself"

Now I know the tweets I had send would have been seen by her as we all follow the school, I reminded her of the convo we had about the trainers and I had pointed out that unless the full PE kit had grew legs and took themselves out of school then they must be there!! She kept saying I dont take PE so I dont know and its maybe best if I just replace the whole PE kit.

Now AIBU to think that she should sod the sodding hell off, stop sending me private messages and that the school should take some sodding responsibilty?!

Have you checked lost property?

SWIMTHECHANNEL · 24/10/2014 09:19

I would get your ds to bring the kit home on non sports days. My ds has a combination padlock on his bag - otherwise kit disappears regularly.

Good luck finding it.

CromerSutra · 24/10/2014 09:20

If he hasn't brought it home at all then you certainly have a point. I don't blame you for feeling pissed off!

DiaDuit · 24/10/2014 09:22

Ooh she was a bit arsey wasnt she? Is she like that generally?

I think if school arent providing them with a locked cupboard or lockers for their PE kit then he should bring it home and yes school should replace as they were responsible for it.

dontknowwhatnametopick · 24/10/2014 09:23

He brought it home the second week of school cos he thought he had to, we sent it back and reminded him to leave it, it has not crossed over the doors of that school since! The teacher also said to me that they have not needed their kit on as its just been movement things they are doing so not needed a full change into kit!

Checked lost property too, nothing!

The teacher sounds phenominally irritating.

In the real world, I'd say you have no chance at all of the school replacing the PE kit.

Either your son hasn't put it all back properly (so in theory it should turn up in lost property, or under a bookcase or somewhere), or someone has taken it, or both.

I'd speak to the office staff or deputy head, and tell them their policy of keeping kit at school isn't working, maybe they have a stock of second hand items they could give you.

Whatever you do, I'd insist on the kit coming home each week.

Your DS's teacher is very rude.

MimiSunshine · 24/10/2014 09:25

The kit is kept in school, Who washes it?

But no YWNBU to ask the school to replace it, if their policy is for it to be kept at school but they haven't kept it secure or kept track of then it's their responsibility to replace it.

DiaDuit · 24/10/2014 09:26

In our school they just ask us to send the kids in wearing their johging bottoms and trainers. It works for us. They dont have to change at all.

dontknowwhatnametopick · 24/10/2014 09:26

DiaDuit no she is generally nice. last week in Scotland it was Oct week and she private messaged me to say have a good holiday with two kisses at the end!

That week I also tweeted a mum to confirm address of a play area for DS party that my DS was going to and she messaged me to give me into trouble as it wasnt a private message so everyone could see the details! Fair enough if I was asking the Mums home address!

If the school have asked that the PE kit stays in school then they have the responsibility for keeping it safe

Stuckinastorm · 24/10/2014 09:28

Dd lost her swimming kit a week before our holiday. I told teacher dd wouldn't be swimming the one week due to lost kit. Teacher wanted me to take another in, I said I wasn't taking another in as if that also went missing then she'd be short of costumes on our holiday. Teacher wasn't impressed. Neither was I as all the kit was named. About 3 months later towel turned up in lost property, can't remember if the costume ever re-appeared....
Last week ds' coat went missing, found in lost property, his swim kit also went missing but I found it on an unnamed peg--
What's the point in labelling everything if it all just gets dumped in lost property or other places anyway? Why not check the name & return it??!!!!

DecaffCoffeeAndRollupsPlease · 24/10/2014 09:28

I think teachers contacting parents over twitter individually is odd, but maybe I am just waaaay behind the times and e-com etiquette.

Check the lost property and keep asking for your kit. Contact the pe department every day and ask them to check lost property and other children daily if necessary. This problem is so frustrating and expensive for the parents who aren't thieves (forgetful maybe?)

If you do end up buying mote kit, buy supermarket stuff and emblazen DC's name all over, embroider if possible, on the outside, in effort to combat the forgetful parents not returning accidentally acquired kit.

dontknowwhatnametopick · 24/10/2014 09:29

Sorry I wasnt being clear, on PE days we send kids in wearing the school polo shirth then they change into shorts and trainers. They also said in block one they wouldnt need their shorts they can do the PE in their trousers/skirts and trainers so the kit did not need to be used yet, the more I write down the more I realise how unorganised it all is!

My dc also have a PE Kit that has to be left in school. It comes home every half term to be washed...it doesn't need washing more often than that through the winter because they do PE indoors so no mud/dirt and they're 6 and 4 so sweating isn't an issue.

If one of my dcs PE kit was misplaced in school i'd fully expect the school to replace it. Once they have it, it's their responsibility to keep it safe IMO.

3pigsinblanketsandasausagerole · 24/10/2014 09:31

The twitter thing is odd

Unfortunately missing clothes seems to be standard at school these days however the whole kit missing is suspicious

puds11isNAUGHTYnotNAICE · 24/10/2014 09:32

Mimi my DD's school keep theirs in school. The kits come home at half term and term to be washed.

DiaDuit · 24/10/2014 09:33

Yes it really does all sound a bit haphazard. I would just keep his kit at home and send him wearing it on the day.

18yearstooold · 24/10/2014 09:38

Teachers should not be private messaging on social media

RiverTam · 24/10/2014 09:40

it's all very odd. DD's PE kit is kept as school for the whole term (again, it won't need washing, why would it? Indoor PE only and they're hardly working up a sweat) but as far as I can gather she's never actually worn it for PE, she just does it in what she's wearing (T shirt and leggings most likely, there's no uniform).

If it's the school rule that the kit is kept at school then I think they do need to take some responsibility if it just vanishes. I would speak to the Head of Year if you're having no joy with this very irritating teacher.

dontknowwhatnametopick · 24/10/2014 09:47

18years thats what I thought too but then wondered if I was looking too much into it!

Whatchamacalllit · 24/10/2014 09:47

I think if the school gave a directive to the parents (and that is what I'm taking out of the original post) that the kids were to bring in the PE gear and leave it in the school between PE classes, then they are assuming responsibility for it when it isn't being worn by the child.

I would arrange a meeting with the head teacher and PE teacher, state just that and ask what they are going to do about it. You did your part of the deal - supplied your child with PE gear - but they haven't done their part - keep it secure so that it is available each time your child needs it.

It really does defeat the purpose of labelling everything that your child wears if it goes missing or worse is stolen from them.

GreenPetal94 · 24/10/2014 09:55

I think you are over thinking it all. We send cheap plimsolls not trainers and Asda shorts. You don't want to have to replace it all the time, but I would buy another one and explain to you little one how to keep it all together. Obviously after going in and checking lost property and the changing rooms etc yourself. If it happens again then complain to school.

Teachers have a large class to teach and can only spend so much time keeping track of each PE item.

Recently my son lost his trousers during PE. This caused some amusement in our house, but ultimately I went in to school (normally he walks home) and actually looked at the room where they hang the coats and there on the bench, quite a few days on, were his long lost trousers (he is 11!)

TaliZorahVasNormandy · 24/10/2014 09:55

My DD has managed to lose, 1 plimsol from her PE kit, no idea where its gone, will have to search for it. Even having sewed name labels in the kits dont seem to help either.
