This little chap (or chapess)? I am a hardcore camper but feel differently about bugs when in a 4* hotel. Is anyone able to identify it? Baby cockroach? Blood-sucking Werewolf Beetle?
Feel a bit guilty for creating a fuss but would have wondered if he had friends in my pillows...

I prepaid fluffy, but I might just accidentally mention it if it isn't mentioned by the staff on checkout... And I did nick the pen.

Thanks iccl, top info. But for the purposes of checkout, this might just have been the Usain Bolt of the bedbug fraternity. If that is okay.

this thread has made me super itchy

MrsTerryPratchett · 19/10/2014 22:20

Have a little look around the seams of the furniture for little dark blob-looking marks. Bedbug poo.

Catsize · 19/10/2014 22:25

Thanks MrsTP, but I ain't going back in there. I will stay in the room next door and hope that it can't go through walls. Still, this has all been very enlightening and far more interesting than the work I was supposed to be doing this evening which was the whole reason for the hotel stay - so I could work in peace and not have to get up at 03:50

That's OK Catsize I don't blame you. I once did a presentation on Bedbugs for a class and someone came in next week with a little baggie, for me to 'check out'. Yep, you guessed it, a little friend was in there. "A present? For me?" is what I didn't say.

ElephantsNeverForgive · 19/10/2014 22:30

Bed bugs in that link are segmented like wood lice, I don't think your beastly was.

Far more likely a small beetle.

LemonDrizzleTwunt · 19/10/2014 22:30

Pretty certain this isn't a bed bug, there normally tiny, think along the lines of the size of nits.

Slowdownsally · 19/10/2014 22:34

I hate those little bastards. A housemate managed to bring some home with her from Malaysia!

Two whole house treTments from the pest control chaps later and we were finally free of them. It was hideous, hideous.

Their bites are foul.

If I were you OP, I'd move to the next country rather than come into contact with them again.

PiperIsOrange · 19/10/2014 22:34

Wishes I never opened this thread. I'm itching all over.

Hope you have a good night sleep

Catsize · 19/10/2014 22:52

Thanks folks. Off to bed now. Checked this bed a little bit for more companions. Can't see any. Will post again tomorrow. If I don't, I have been eaten by Welsh Flesh-eating Hotel Beetles. Thank you all. Night night. Tardis
(Sorry, just wanted to try that emoticon)
Bollocks. Just realised I've left my gorgeous swimsuit on the back of the bathroom door next door. I fear it may be no more...

You are not in Oz are you? That just looks like a Christmas beetle to me. They have started turning up.

UltraNumb · 19/10/2014 23:29

its a beetle, most likely the very common garden friend called the violet ground beetle.

probably came in on someones shoes or coat, we get them loads here!

FannyFifer · 19/10/2014 23:36

Hope you get a good discount on hotel price.

Catsize · 20/10/2014 05:19

Doing some expressing. Still alive...
Not in Oz. In Wales.
Like the idea of a Christmas beetle. Didn't have any sleigh bells or a red pointy hat though.
It was the whispy antennae things that made me think it was not a bog standard beetle. Who knows...

OP posts:
Catsize · 20/10/2014 07:39

Was really hoping for violet ground beetle, but my beetle's legs were much shorter. Wrong colour for Christmas beetle.
This side view might illustrate leg stumpiness better.

Well, they called out pest control apparently, and it isn't a bed bug. Phew! But pest control had no idea what it was so it has gone to see an entomologist. Not so phew.

Not sure whether my little friend has gone to see him/her alive or deaded. Hmm

Got an apology on checkout. There were a couple of other issues at the hotel. Had to change rooms twice in all, as the wrong type had been allocated. And there were a couple of other things. Would feel a bit mean to complain though. Unless they find out it is a Lesser Spotted Lethal Beetle. I have asked them to tell me what sort of beetle it is.

Catsize, glad it wasn't a bedbug after all. Good job you don't visit any tropical countries; I had a blinking scorpion in my bed once (Senegal again!). Not funny. As long as I don't see a spider, I'm fine in Africa with any little beasties. The bigger ones (people have actually woken up on a sleeping mat to find a snake snuggling up to them) are not so amusing.

Catsize · 20/10/2014 22:35

Hmmm. Not sure Senegal is on my holiday list spiders. Thanks for the heads up. Am surprised by how seriously they took the whole business. Quite impressive really. Feel a bit guilty! Blush

Rainbunny · 21/10/2014 15:34

Are you sure? It's far larger than any bedbugs I've read about. From your photo it also doesn't resemble the picture of bedbugs posted below either. I've been told you should use the torch app on your phone and life the corners of the mattress on the bed, if there are dark spots in the mattress creases etc... it's a sign of bedbugs (I think the black spots are meant to be bedbug feces).... Hoping it isn't a bedbug for your sake!

Rainbunny · 21/10/2014 15:34

lift not life sorry.

JustForThisFred · 01/11/2014 03:44

Urgh. What happened catsize??

I have just left a hotel after finding a couple of bugs. The bathroom was filthy and the room smelt a little damp, so already not impressed. The linen was clearly fresh on the bed. It was a tiny single room so I assumed not used much until I went to use the toilet and there was a poo in it. Clearly had been there a few hours I flushed it, then thought, eurgh so called them & asked them to come & clean the toilet. Later on I realised how filthy the rest of the bathroom was but it was 9pm by then and a bit late to start looking for somewhere else to stay, then something started crawling towards me, normally I'd just flick it away, but my immediate thought was 'that's a bed bug'. I took a couple of photos but the bastard moved quickly. Then there was another one.

I packed my things. Young staff left on duty were great, offered me another room etc but I said I was going home. 2 hour drive home, fab. I really should have checked in somewhere else to make sure I wasn't bringing them home, but didn't think of that, just couldn't bear the thought of sleeping in another bed but my own.

So I came home, took me & everything else straight into the bathroom, had a long hot shower, hair wash, everything. Got dried in there, left towels in there... Only things that came out were a steamed cleaned me and phone & iPad, both inspected.

After about a hour I was starting to relax, thinking about sleep (and not the washing & checking & whatever else I need to do tomorrow!!!)... And another bug is heading for me.... Argh. He's smaller than the other but appears to be the same.

I can't stop itching.

Just read another thread about his impossible they are to get rid of in a house, how stupid was I to come home :(

I'll try to post the pictures to see what you all think?!

JustForThisFred · 01/11/2014 03:48

Sorry photos are crap but there wasn't much light and they were fast. Also can't tell which are the best photos on thumbnail.

Oh and if it wasn't for the unholy noise the machine makes, it would have all been boil washed tonight (I don't like the neighbours very much, but equally I don't hate them that much! Machine has just started walking while thumping. I think it's hit the toddler years!!). Just hope I don't have any escapees over night.
