Bliss. I've told my family to play it at the end of my funeral. Smile

Yes it is a pretty perfect pop song. JL is a genius songwriter.

cruikshank · 18/10/2014 22:49

Love this song.

Did anybody else ever see the sock puppet version of it that was on Youtube years ago? It's been taken off now, which makes me sad. 'Twas very well done.

Gruntfuttock · 18/10/2014 22:56

OP, not only do I hate the song, but just reading the thread title has given me an earworm, so kindly consider yourself glared at!

In fact, this is me glaring at you!

It's probably Dancing Queen.

And Band on The Run is better than Live & Let Die

Nancy66 · 18/10/2014 23:12

Oh god, no way. Hate it. It's a 'turn the radio off' song for me. Right up there with 'Walking on Sunshine'.

mixedpeel · 18/10/2014 23:15

I can't bear it either.

Scuttlebutter · 18/10/2014 23:19

I love it. And also had Out of the Blue for my 13th Birthday!

I listened to it this week, when I heard that one of our dear dogs who had been in Intensive Care in the vet hospital with spinal injuries would be coming home in a few days. I was so happy I cried, then I listened to this song as it captured my mood perfectly. Smile

Italiangreyhound · 18/10/2014 23:20

My dear dad loved this song AllMimsyWereTheBorogoves and we had it at his funeral ten years ago, at the end. He was cremated and we asked people at the crematorium to sit and listen to it and not to get up and go until it was finished. I would have hated people getting up and walking out while it was playing. It was very moving.

SadEyedLady · 18/10/2014 23:25

I really like this song, and have never quite forgiven my DH for telling me that a school friend of his claimed that the bit at the beginning was the perfect rhythm for wanking to (why you'd need to wank to a beat though I have no idea). When I hear the opening bars it always pops into my mind. Curse you, DH! Angry

Jelliebabe2 · 19/10/2014 00:02

Its a living thing for me! Love elo completely not my era but Hubby's father loved them, so hubby loved them (first record) then I bought tickets fur a concert to make him happy.. Yawn... Now I'm blimmin hooked! Grin

Ohwhatfuckeryisthis · 19/10/2014 07:55

I'm with Grunt. Not an ELO fan at all.
Waterloo Sunset
Hey YA
Wouldn't it be nice or God only knows (but not that celebrity wankfest on the BBC)

AllMimsyWereTheBorogoves · 19/10/2014 13:32

OK, lots of other contenders for most perfect pop song! Can I throw into the mix? Has to be very loud, IMHO.

I am working hard to forget what SadEyedLady has said there. Angry To help me along the way, I'll mention that your name reminds me that the best song of all time (in any genre) is surely Tangled Up In Blue.

Not unreasonable at all! In face, I love most of ELOs music. Does anybody know if they do tours anymore?

AllMimsyWereTheBorogoves · 19/10/2014 13:41

I believe after the phenomenal success of their Hyde Park concert last month that Jeff Lynne is considering it, clickety.

MargotThreadbetter · 19/10/2014 13:44

I saw an amazing ELO tribute band a couple of weeks ago Clickety, they were fab, and the singer looked and sounded just like JL (despite a dodgy afro wig!)
They were called the ELO Experience. Definitely worth seeing - very very like the real thing. And real strings too!

growinggoldwithcustard · 19/10/2014 13:51

AllMimsy we played Mr Blue Sky at the end of my DH's funeral as it was his favourite summer driving song. Twas a lovely and uplifting.

AllMimsyWereTheBorogoves · 19/10/2014 13:54

Thanks growinggold, I'm so glad it helped. That's the effect I'd be hoping for.

deadwitchproject · 19/10/2014 17:54

It's my DH's favourite song, he says it always puts a smile on his face. I love it too!

HereComesYourMam · 19/10/2014 18:50

I love it too. It kicked off our wedding playlist Smile

R4roger · 19/10/2014 18:58

it was the first single i ever bought! Grin

I loved ELO. Got so many of their albums, Out of the Blue, can't remember how old i was, I remember one album I was desperate to buy, I think it was after christmas or my birthday and I didnt have enough money and handed over a Boots voucher in part payment, the bloke took it, he must have felt sorry for me, and said he would buy himself some plasters Grin

and a triple box set with Eldorado and and others

FrancesNiadova · 19/10/2014 20:29

No way, the orchestration in Live & Let Die is so much more interesting! The chorus & main melodic phrase of Band on the Run is all set within a major 3rd. NOOOOOOooooooooooo!

jeremycamel · 19/10/2014 21:07

I was at the hyde park concert in September and saw ELO. I wasn't a fan before but Jeff lynne was brilliant. I hadn't realised how many songs I knew and how fantastic they were. I've seen many bands over the years but this gig was the best ever. So yanbu!
