To think that recipes like this should be banned

...or at least come with a big fat warning triangle. It's Miranda Gore Brown's recipe for Hazelnut Tiramisu Cake, in this month's Essentials. It's basically a nutrition-wheel red-out, with chocolate, double cream, mascarpone, butter, sugar, sugar, booze, sugar, chocolate...you get the picture. Calorie content: 1074 cals a serving.

Shock

I'm not a food prude. I'm not a health nut. I like a slice of cake as much as the next woman. But really? Is it physically possible for anyone except endurance athletes, Arctic explorers and lanky teenagers to eat this without it affecting their health? This kind of recipe is more like drugs than food, TBH, and I think it's probably deeply irresponsible to be promoting it when so many people are worried about obesity. Yes, you can choose not to eat it, or have a smaller slice. But I'm not sure it should be glorified as delicious even though it probably is

AIB completely U to feel a bit disturbed?

OP posts:

Genetically modified corn causes cancer? Evidence please? Hmm

I don't think I could eat more than the tiniest sliver of that cake, but oh would I enjoy it.

Banning foods is useless, we need to learn moderation instead.

morethanpotatoprints · 17/10/2014 19:50

YA completely bonkers Grin

Andrewofgg · 17/10/2014 20:03

OP says:

I'm not a food prude. I'm not a health nut.

Wrong on both counts. Yes she is.

CherryDolphin · 17/10/2014 20:11

I would eat that cake in a flash. YABU.

CherryDolphin · 17/10/2014 20:14

Also I'm assuming that the nutritional content is per the whole cake and not per serving? I know you did say it was per serving but that sounds a little off. Because I do find it a bit Hmm if 1074 is per serving but I would still eat it.

ElkTheory · 17/10/2014 20:22

Banned? Yes, that is obviously the right course of action. Hmm

I'm now imagining the dystopian future when cake recipes are furtively passed around in samizdat copies.

kelper · 17/10/2014 20:24

So if you had a smaller slice, or a mouthful say, how would you work out the calories then? Tbf I would just get that cake in ma belly ;)

BIWI · 17/10/2014 20:29

Sometimes I don't understand all the fear about obesity. I do understand that type 2 diabetes is ridiculously expensive for the NHS, so obviously that's really bad. But obesity seems to have become a national obsession.

But it's the rate at which obesity is increasing that's the worry. Obesity leads to not just diabetes but also hypertension, cancer and Alzheimer's disease. Alzheimer's is now being called Type 3 diabetes by some scientists.

So it's right and pertinent to worry about our health, weight and the food we eat. And we all eat far too much sugar (via carbohydrates).

But despite saying all that, I really can't get my knickers in a twist about a cake like this. It's obviously not something that is to be eaten every day. And we all deserve a treat every now and then.

Andrewofgg · 17/10/2014 20:32

ElkTheory Cake will also be available in underground eateasies where you will have to give the right name at the door to be allowed in. And Chocleggers will smuggle it in and make great fortunes. And we wil all get fatter than ever before!

MaryWestmacott · 17/10/2014 20:33

"I don't like something. It's not something I want. Therefore, it must be BANNED."

ElkTheory · 17/10/2014 20:35

"Chocleggers." Love it! Hmm, might be time for me to make a career change. . .

CherryDolphin · 17/10/2014 20:40

I have a feeling this is being taken far too seriously.

merrymouse · 17/10/2014 20:40

Am confused.

Why are they not just recommending a smaller serving?

It's not healthy to have half your daily calories in the form of cake or biscuits but doesn't that just come down to portion size?

If it is so calorific that it is 1000 calories even for a spoonful, wouldn't it just not taste very nice? I sense a printing error.

Andrewofgg · 17/10/2014 20:41

You cannot take cake too seriously.

mrspremise · 17/10/2014 20:57

Michael Pollan writes that you can eat all the 'junk' food you want, as long as you make it yourself... I think he's onto something Grin

Aridane · 17/10/2014 21:05

This sounds yummy - can anyone post a link? Couldn't readily find via google

ShadowStar · 17/10/2014 21:46

YABU.

This is obviously a fiddly to make special occasion cake, not an everyday pudding. It's hardly in the same league as a muffin or cupcake that someone might have with coffee several times a week.

And as for warning triangles - are there really many people deluded enough to think that cakes of any description are a healthy food?

Stratter5 · 17/10/2014 21:49

Carrot cake, fruit cake, LDC? Grin

Tinkerball · 17/10/2014 21:52

Thanks for that OP, was looking for a special cake. Need to buy the magazine now!

grocklebox · 17/10/2014 21:53

Its fucking cake, not fucking crack. Are you on glue?

ShadowStar · 17/10/2014 22:00

Actually, on consideration, I think the OP has this all back to front.

Eating lots of cake is unhealthy. I think we can probably all agree on that. However, most people's cake intake comes from cake that they've bought in shops, cafes, etc.

So.... ban people from buying cakes! Let them eat all the cake they want, but only if they have made it themselves (or someone else, i.e. friend / family member has made it and given it to them for free).

Many, maybe most, people simply won't bother baking themselves, and will just do without cake. Even if they do bake the super-calorific cake the OP's concerned about, the lack of cake from shops will balance this out, and they'll still end up eating less cake over the year.

Problem of too much cake solved Grin

grocklebox · 17/10/2014 22:05

that is actually what I do, Shadow. Seriously.

LaurieFairyCake · 17/10/2014 22:09

Is it really a thousand calories a portion?

That just doesn't sound right - a Big Mac and fries is about that

kali110 · 17/10/2014 22:23

Slight overreaction? It is possible to enjoy things like this in moderation.
Cafe i used work in, slices of cake were between 700-900 calories each. They were very popular and bloody nice!
My friend has to eat high calories foods as she loses weight very easily.

Mintyy · 17/10/2014 22:27

I also seriously doubt it is 1,000 calories per portion.

I'm not actually sure what the point of this thread is Confused.

There's more than 1,000 calories in the average takeaway curry, or two course meal out plus wine. Should they be banned too?
