My OH's uncle was in the catering corps during the WWII. He left a book of army recipes to OH and the standard one for making tea for 50 men was to boil up tea, milk and sugar together for 5 minutes. Tell DP you are making tea the military way :)

Surfsup1 · 17/10/2014 05:53

Just leave the milk in the container with lid on?
I would consider it v odd and annoying if you didn't make the tea the way I like it.

MildDrPepperAddiction · 17/10/2014 05:58

YABU. That sounds awful. What if you take more milk than someone else?

LittleBlueHermit · 17/10/2014 06:02

I thought adding milk straight away stopped the tea from steeping properly? (Or is that a myth?)

Concordial · 17/10/2014 06:52

Why not just keep the cat off the table/kitchen top.

It is a bit strange to add the milk into the teapot if you are making tea for others. If it's just for you, go for your life.

kentishgirl · 17/10/2014 06:55

sounds disgusting, like when you make tea in a flask for a day out, it tastes all weird.

How is the cat getting the milk? I don't understand. You take lid of milk bottle, pour milk into tea, put lid back on. What are you doing with your milk?

Cockadoodledooo · 17/10/2014 07:42

YABU! What if your guests don't take milk in their tea like me? I would be horrified to be forced to drink milky tea because you couldn't keep your cat off the table/work surface.

skylark2 · 17/10/2014 07:49

Get a jug with a lid? Or just leave the milk in the container with the lid on?

And keep the cat out of places where it can get at human food. Yuck.

Only1scoop · 17/10/2014 07:53

Yabu ughhhh

WerewolfBarMitzvah · 17/10/2014 07:55

I would be most confused as to why milky tea was coming out of the teapot. So YABU.

If exposed milk is an issue and you can't just put the milk bottle on the table, can you fashion a lid for the milk jug with foil or a plate?

You're not one of these people who put milk in the teacup first, are you?

victoryinthekitchen · 17/10/2014 09:10

yanbu it sounds delicious (off to put the kettle on)

cherrybombxo · 17/10/2014 09:59

I don't drink tea so was really confused when a colleague told me off (lightheartedly!) for putting milk in first. I've always drank coffee and back in my instant coffee days I learned that you put milk in first or the water will burn the coffee, making it taste bitter.

I'm no longer asked to make tea Wink

MrsWembley · 17/10/2014 10:07

Not so much unreasonable as bloody wierdHmm

HTH

Trapper · 17/10/2014 10:09

Yuck. The milk will cook and taste all wrong.

HoneyDragonMumshnet · 17/10/2014 10:10

Tell the cat to use a straw

hellsbellsmelons · 17/10/2014 10:11

Confused That is all!

PrettyPictures92 · 17/10/2014 10:18

Do people still use tea pots?? baffled

Sallyingforth · 17/10/2014 10:23

What else does the cat get its face into?
I'd make sure that the cat never jumps up on the worktop.

GilesGirl · 17/10/2014 10:41

I think I'll pass on a cup, thanks, as you apparently will have cat hair in it.

ScarletFever · 17/10/2014 14:52

ew.... that's soooo wrong...

MIF (Milk in first) for the posh people as their cups were very thin and liable to break with the hot water

TIF (tea in first) for the workers who had nice fat earthen ware cups that could cope with the shock of the heat

ScarletFever · 17/10/2014 14:54

why is the cat able to get to the milk? we keep ours in the fridge

Crinkle77 · 17/10/2014 14:55

Don't pour the milk in the cups until you are ready to pour the tea

FelineLou · 17/10/2014 15:03

We never put our cat in the fridge but she does get shut in the conservatory.

MissBlennerhasset · 17/10/2014 15:11

I don't see anything wrong with this. If you put the teabags into the pot first, let them steep, take them out and then add milk, how is it different than making up the tea in the cup?

Intrigued at how the milk would 'cook' in the teapot, too!

SanitaryOwl · 17/10/2014 15:41

I want to know how the cat opens the milk carton without opposable thumbs.
