to hate the word 'ta'

GnomeDePlume · 15/10/2014 19:45

especially when I see it written in an email from my boss?

Every time my boss writes 'ta' instead of 'thank you' it makes it makes my eyeballs itch.

There is just something so dismissive of 'ta'. It isnt a proper thank you, it is something small children might say when given a biscuit. It isnt the response I expect from my professionally qualified boss when I send a piece of work.

I don't mind it when young children use it. But from an adult? Just no.

YANBU.

partialderivative · 15/10/2014 19:55

I often use it, both informally and within work e-mails.

Strangely, a lot of other informal stuff would bother me; just not 'ta'

CheeseAndBeans · 15/10/2014 19:57

YANBU, unprofessional in a work environment and just lazy in other settings from an adult.
From small children, it's fine.

futterwacken · 15/10/2014 19:58

I hear it a lot where I live and it sounds childish but just how people speak. Written down is inexcusable! YANBU

Oblomov · 15/10/2014 19:58

I hate it too.

Showy · 15/10/2014 19:59

I don't like it either.

ouryve · 15/10/2014 19:59

I don't mind it, but it is rather unprofessional, coming from your boss.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 15/10/2014 20:00

Yabu. I use it - it is a feature of my Northern roots and nothing to do with speaking to children. So there!

PartyFops · 15/10/2014 20:02

I think its sometimes used to lighten the tone. Emails can sound harsh, so putting cheers or ta can make it seem more friendly perhaps?

IHeartLockhart · 15/10/2014 20:02

I hate it, and I'm proper northern.

magicalmrmistofelees · 15/10/2014 20:02

YANBU, I hate it and don't see the need for it. I'm even trying to teach 11 month old DD to say 'thank you' rather than 'ta'.

Taz1212 · 15/10/2014 20:03

YANBU. I can't stand it - even when small children say it. I remember DH and MIL telling DC, "Say 'ta' " while I gritted my teeth and tried to not screech, "No, say 'thank you'!!!!!"

LuisSuarezTeeth · 15/10/2014 20:05

YABU it's a dialect thing.

Ty is worse.

Ta v much

Bowlersarm · 15/10/2014 20:05

YANBU

FrancesNiadova · 15/10/2014 20:07

Ecky thump, tha' s reet ottymotty ter get meithered over summat or nowt.Wink

ShakesBootyFlabWobbles · 15/10/2014 20:08

YABU.

It is used in various local dialects and has nothing to do with babies in those areas.

Saying ta hasn't held back your professionally qualified boss, they are ahead of you career wise. Touch of the green eyes possibly?

I feel the urge to say get over yourself and be more tolerant of local dialects.

Ta Wink

CarryOnDancing · 15/10/2014 20:09

I'm northern and hate it. I hate it equally when taught to children. It's so unnecessary, DD managed to say thanks and then thank you quite easily.

Jazzhandsrule · 15/10/2014 20:12

Can't stand it either. Hate children being taught to say ta instead of thank you and if I hear an adult say it, I too get itchy eyeballs!

squoosh · 15/10/2014 20:12

I don't mind it and even use it on informal work emails.

Ta.

WinterHobbit · 15/10/2014 20:18

Young children using it is fine for me however I would also find it mildly irritating if an adult were to use it.

Sameshitdifferentusername · 15/10/2014 20:21

I hate language and dialect snobs more.

GnomeDePlume · 15/10/2014 20:21

Interesting about the the idea of it being a dialect thing. My boss does emphasise their 'northernness' a lot. On the other hand my parents were both from northern counties yet never emphasised it at all and were also very keen 'thank you' people.

I dont think it is a green eyed monster thing. I have had many bosses over the years of many nationalities. None of my other bosses' have ever annoyed me by their email style.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 15/10/2014 20:21

This thread has annoyed me more than it probably should have actually. So snobbish.

Ta for that.

GnomeDePlume · 15/10/2014 20:22

sorry about the random apostrophe

ShakesBootyFlabWobbles · 15/10/2014 20:23

I am wondering if you work for me now...

Ta.
