to hate the word 'ta'

GnomeDePlume · 15/10/2014 19:45

especially when I see it written in an email from my boss?

Every time my boss writes 'ta' instead of 'thank you' it makes it makes my eyeballs itch.

There is just something so dismissive of 'ta'. It isnt a proper thank you, it is something small children might say when given a biscuit. It isnt the response I expect from my professionally qualified boss when I send a piece of work.

Can you get Brew in there too?

TaliZorahVasNormandy · 15/10/2014 22:35

Actually, I can handle "Ta". Its glaringly bad spelling of easy words that, I dont count people dyslexics or people who just arent great at spelling in this.

But my friend who when typing:

Lying
Dying

Spells them:

Lieng
Dieng

Gives me the rage.

squoosh · 15/10/2014 22:37

Ummmm.......apostrophes need love too you know.

Beingfrank · 15/10/2014 22:37

Ta (and t'raah) are normal for me (Mancunian) but it wouldn't have occurred to me to teach it to a small child as a short-cut.

TaliZorahVasNormandy · 15/10/2014 22:38

I love them so much, I dont use them, dont wanna work them too hard.

Thebodyloveschocolateandwine · 16/10/2014 00:37

Bab is short for baby but it's used to refer to any child or teenager so the bab is your child. Grin orite.

Thebodyloveschocolateandwine · 16/10/2014 00:41

Oh tarar a bit

That's what we said at our school. Grin

squoosh · 16/10/2014 01:35

orite.

perthmom · 16/10/2014 06:29

I cannot stand it when people say "yous" ("what are yous all doing tonight"). I'm sure there's no such word as yous. It makes my stomach do flip flops and my eyelid to twitch.

I know that's nothing to do with the word ta.

I don't mind ta.

Mintyy · 16/10/2014 08:19

perthmom
But yous or youze is a quirk of dialect (the Irish say youze all the time) much like mom is. Try not to be so discriminatory.

Thebodyloveschocolateandwine · 16/10/2014 08:29

To be honest the worst things are the Americanisms. My kids say math and meds!
Angry
No it's maths and medicine.

It's what nurseries teach small children to say before they can manage thank you, isn't it? I don't really like the word but in that context I can understand it - they are teaching them to be polite.

I don't really come across adults saying it in any other context - it sounds a bit old fashioned If anything.

trice · 16/10/2014 09:01

I say ta. I like it. And I am usually a snob.

perthmom · 16/10/2014 09:06

Erm, okay, I wasn't aware I was being discriminatory. I simply said it gets on my nerves.

iwantgin · 16/10/2014 09:11

I hate ta.

When DS was little I had to make sure he didn't take notice of theDGP, nursery staff etc who wanted him to say taaaa.

I am northern and I guess it is popular.

LadyOnARooftop · 16/10/2014 09:20

I use Ta all the time but DD says thank you - it's not a child's word round here (I'm northern - Lancs living in Yorkshire) but a form of Thanks. From the Danish 'Tak', we've just got lazy over the centuries and dropped the K.

Ta, Vikings.

I also work in banking and we use it all the time.

ConkerTime · 16/10/2014 09:28

I like a short adult "Ta!"

I don't like a long drawly "TAaaaAA" as promoted by some caregivers.

Perhaps LadyonARooftop has it with the Danish link: Think Borgen!

You do realise OP that it's short for THANKS A-LOT (I come from a long line of cockneys :) ) actually more polite than thanks.

PetulaGordino · 16/10/2014 15:18

really? "a-lot" isn't a word though. where is that idea from?

Doggone79 · 16/10/2014 15:22

Instead of saying "thanks alot" we say T.A. Instead (ta)

PetulaGordino · 16/10/2014 15:24

"alot" isn't a word though

people have been saying "ta" for centuries - is that the original etymology from the ?18th century?

Doggone79 · 16/10/2014 15:30

"A-lot" isn't a word it's a saying
