cleaner taken thread out of carpet

one of our carpets is a little loose under the door bar/threshold thing. It is has been like that for a little while and needs pushed back under the threshold, which our builder is going to do (we have had a renovation done and it is on the snagging list).

I came home today and a thread about 50 cm long is gone from the edge of the carpet into the hallway. The carpet is thick thread, so it is really really noticeable. The carpet is ruined effectively and will need replaced.

The cleaner must have done it whilst hoovering over the threshold. Which I never do given it is a little loose (you can't fail to notice it is coming out from under the threshold). But she has failed to mention it to me!

I can see these things happen, I am not quite sure who is at fault here, but AIBU to think she should have at least mentioned it to me?

'AIBU to think she should have at least mentioned it to me?' That is the question.

Even if something it not your fault, but damage was done whilst you were carrying out your job, wouldn't you mention it. Isn't that that the right thing to do?

Well, if it is as obvious as you say it is, she will know that you would see it. She didn't attempt to hide it. The outcome would be the same iyswim even if she had told you about such a glaringly obvious thing.

Sorry, it does come across as though you think it is her fault- it is like you want her to 'own up.'

Notmadeofrib · 15/10/2014 18:51

Yes she should but I think the cleaner may have worried about the outcome. Not saying anything doesn't help it's more a deny deny deny approach..... a little like the 10p sized chip out of my quartz work top my cleaner managed to make but ignored. She didn't do it on purpose, we both knew she'd done it, but it was an accident so what would discussion achieve?

DiaDuit · 15/10/2014 18:57

But that is fecking not relevant! Shouldn't she have mentioned it?

Well, maybe she took the same line of thinking as you did. You didnt mention to her to avoid the area so she didnt mentione to you that when she did- this happened. You not mentioning it to her may have given the message that it really wasnt that important to you if it got damaged so why would she mention it to you?

IrishBloodEnglishHeart · 15/10/2014 18:58

Are you sure she did it? Absolutely sure?

If I were the Cleaner I would have mentioned it. I have copped to much worse when I didn't really have to. That's what Catholic guilt will do to you Grin

DiaDuit · 15/10/2014 18:58

In other words, you are expecting a courtesy from your cleaner that you didnt allow her yourself.

TheCraicDealer · 15/10/2014 19:00

It may well be her worry that by owning up she'll invite a demand to replace the carpet. It's not the grown-up thing to do, but it's understandable. I'm not sure Accidental Damage cover on your home insurance would even cover this tbh, it could be deemed as inadequate design/installation of the carpet which is an exclusion on most policies.

YourKidsYourRulesHunXxx · 15/10/2014 19:03

Why don't you ask her about it?

BerylStreep · 15/10/2014 19:08

I don't get what is funny about what MrsMorton said.

Confused
Mrsmorton · 15/10/2014 19:15

It's innit.

HavanaSlife · 15/10/2014 19:20

Bloody hell just get a wider bar

ClapHandsIfYouBelieveInFatties · 15/10/2014 19:23

Show us a photo OP...of the offending area which "needs replaced" and the carpet which "needs pushed back".

I find your use of "need" most upsetting. I suspect my pedantry over grammar is akin to your carpet pedantry.

Sandthorn · 15/10/2014 19:23

"...she should have at least mentioned it..." does seem to imply that the OP would've expected something more than a mention. Anyway, I was thinking on similar lines to Dia... Maybe the cleaner assumed you hadn't noticed/weren't arsed that the carpet was loose, so would neither notice nor care about a pulled thread. She probably should have mentioned it! but I couldn't swear that I would have Blush

in your shoes, I would be annoyed that it had happened, but 99% of my annoyance would be directed at myself.

uptheauntie · 15/10/2014 19:24

A wider bar to cover the damage would need to be 50cm wide - not really feasible!

Clap, it was a typo.

Twice!? Grin

Camolips · 15/10/2014 19:27

Yes, a photo would be good as I can't really envisage a pulled thread noticing that much. But then I live in a pigsty and probably wouldn't notice if the whole carpet was missing, slattern that I am.

Seriouslyffs · 15/10/2014 19:27

Grin mrsd
Picture please, OP before I comment.

ClapHandsIfYouBelieveInFatties · 15/10/2014 19:27

How can one thread being pulled out result in 50cm wide bare patch?

Bartlebee · 15/10/2014 19:27

You really can't blame the cleaner. Whether she told you or not is not really relevant.

If it needed to be fixed, you should have done it, or warned the cleaner not to vacuum that area.

YeGodsAndLittleFishes · 15/10/2014 19:32

Even I can fit a threshold bar. If you had done tjis, and not waited for your builder to do it, you could have saved the carpet. You might be able to claim this on insurance, but tbh I hope not as this was preventable. It is the cleaner's job to vacuum. I doubt you pay her enough to think.

Fingeronthebutton · 15/10/2014 19:33

Bugger being your cleaner. You won't answer the question: Did you point out the loose thread. I take that as a no. Otherwise I think you would have stated it in the op. Accidents happen. Is she/he a good cleaner. Have they been with you a long time. If that's a yes. Then get over it. It's when they burn your house down that you have reason to complain.

HavanaSlife · 15/10/2014 19:34

Well the way you wrote the op made it sound like it was 50cm across .

This is what happens when people dont just take up the bar and sort the carpet out (as I told dp 100 times) you dont need a builder to do that, just a screw driver snd maybe carpet glue.
