Excuse me whilst I vent spleen on the above 2, ds1 just put on BBC 3 in the middle of Downton! There was a comedy programme by the above called "Come Fly with Me" featuring the above pair. I hated it and dressed as Japanese school girls (with bad style (Mikado eye make-up circa 1897) and the fake accents. This is really bad comedy how do this pair get away with this in 2014 for chrissake. I do remember Little Britain but did not really watch it as used to do v.early shift work and so bed early, this offering seems beyond the pail. Walliams seems such a totally "right on " much loved "luvvie" , I just don't understand Confused

I understand Anne was originally invented by one of the League of Gentlemen actors (Reece?) while they were rehearsing together. I think he was playing the character of her carer and they went on from there.

Never did like LB, though. It's like an offensive version of Gigglebiz.

Charliebitmyfinger · 13/10/2014 10:01

AlmaMartyr good on you, I might join you! Only1scoop Sad this is sheer double standards from the BBC as I heard a discussion on BBC radio at the start of the year about Kim Kardashian and some comedian who blacked up for "fun" at a ball. Even though KK is a self serving sleb there was unanimous outrage on her behalf. There was no mention of W and L and their hateful blacking up. I just do not understand how they get away with it........

OP posts:
raltheraffe · 13/10/2014 10:03

Gigglebiz is crap too.

I love all the CBeebies presenters apart from Justin.

OfaFrenchMind · 13/10/2014 10:14

Bridemaid was pure American safer than safe humor. Nice for an evening, but nothing cult worthy. Little Britain, on the other hand :). I don't think UK people understand how much humor like that is a breath of fresh air in standardised media. So, yes, sometimes it goes a little too far. But the pay off is awesome.

NoMarymary · 13/10/2014 10:24

I think the whole point of humour is personal and what's funny to someone isn't to someone else. If it was racist no one complained at the time and I don't find them particularly offensive (or always funny come to that)

CuttedUpPear · 13/10/2014 10:29

I used to think they were quite a good comedy pairing. That was a while ago now.

I saw Walliams on Big Fat Quiz of The Year recently and he came across as bitchy, bitter and self important.
Noel Fielding was ripping the piss out of him and deservedly so.

The blacking up is racist and disgraceful. Takes me back to It Ain't Half Hot Mum, which I'm sure wouldn't get re-aired these days.

Charliebitmyfinger · 13/10/2014 10:48

NoMarymary BBC had many many complaints (just google) and OfaFrenchmind why dont you look at a thread on AIBU on someone's cousin blacking up on FB pictures, and then you may appreciate why it is so deeply deeply offensive and unacceptable. I am trying to link it...

OP posts:
Charliebitmyfinger · 13/10/2014 10:51

And OfaFrenchMind yes the payoff is awesome for those 2 loathsome twunts at (our) licence payers expense

Now I have been forced to join twitter Blush because I want to tell these arses what I really think. Total double standard from Lucas who quite rightly is taking a pop a UKIP but overlooks his own version of racism. How does that work? I know I am late to the table on this show, but as I am in a new job no longer working nights/early shifts I am watching more TV and I found CFWM to be totally unacceptable. Just googled a blog on CIF in the Guardian on this pair so it seems there are others out there who can express their objection far more eloquently than I can.

OP posts:
zen1 · 13/10/2014 11:07

I think it was only made 3 or 4 years ago. DH was channel hopping last night and when he saw CFWM he commented that he couldn't believe they'd got away with making this stuff in recent times.

Racism is believing that one race is superior to another. I don't see that in Little Britain as they take a pop at everyone and it's jingoistic and silly but that is kind of the point. They really skewered middle class racists as well - remember the WI woman Brownie cake judge who vomits all over over any food made by a non white child?
It is funny and not racist in my opinion.

Come Fly with me - is just not funny and that is why I don't watch it.

Charliebitmyfinger · 13/10/2014 11:17

IamOldGregg CFWM has lazy racial stereotyping. The asian guy in the hi vis jacket (just awful). Damn I really want to link about the thread on white people blacking up and why it is never ever acceptable. I just don't know how to link on ipad -Confused

Racism is so much more complex than just believing that one race is superior to another.

I've never seen this show but it does sound awfully racist. Please can someone explain to me why these people need to "dress up" as a black person. Does the fact that they are wearing blackface (which is incredibly offensive and racist) make these characters funnier?

Walliams and Lucas are vile. Nice to see all the MN casual racists coming out to defend them.

TinklyLittleLaugh · 13/10/2014 11:25

I find Walliams and Lucas' misogyny as disturbing as their racism.

But I have to say, Walliams' kids' books are utterly, utterly brilliant. It is hard to believe that they came from the same person.

FreudiansSlipper · 13/10/2014 11:30

I do not think they are particularly clever with their humour it is more lets go against what we are meant to do and see what we can get away with

I think there is a difference between blacking up and becoming a character who is of different ethnic background

but still the lazy stereotype is not funny when done over and over again

but the some people think Citizen Khan is not funny, full of stereotyping but I found it amusing

minkymuskyslyoldstoaty · 13/10/2014 11:31

Martin Clunes, Martin Clunes Grin

i found that funny.

IamOldGregg · 13/10/2014 11:33

Ah I have only seen about two minutes of CFWM - it was just bad. Lazy racial stereotyping was kind of the joke in Little Britain but it sounds like CFWM has gone too far.

Defending free speech and having a different opinion to you doesn't make people (all people at least) 'casual racists' sausagefries

I thought Little Britain was funny.

If I am going to get angry and twitter ranty and argumentative about racism I save it for stuff that seems more important. Like the Stephen Lawrence case, or the shocking statistics of university education. Not some outdated two bit Goon Show.

I have heard his books are brilliant (with a little nod to Roald Dahl Wink) but surely his success as a celebrated children's author has come off the back of all these horrid shows. Just saying it is hard to get recognition as an author so surely all his luvvie contacts Beeb or otherwise have done him a few favours.....

OP posts:
FreudiansSlipper · 13/10/2014 11:42

We are reading Gangsta Granny at bedtime. it is brilliant

IamOldGregg · 13/10/2014 11:44

I have heard the books are great too - what age are they suitable for?

Just as an aside - Roald Dahl books can be a bit 'borderline' on race issues can't they. Or at least lazy racial stereotyping.

FreudiansSlipper · 13/10/2014 11:53

ds is 7 and is enjoying this book I am reading it to him he reads a little of it

I thought RD had to revise Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. I have not read his books apart from CATCF and Fantastic Mr Fox since I was young but we are working our way through them. his stories are certainly dark in nature and I think he liked to cause controversy and made some rather anti-Semite remarks

DilligafMyUKIP · 13/10/2014 11:54

What would you say if the racial stereotypes portrayed were laughing at Little Britain?

I'm in one of their stereotypes and I find it hilarious. I don't need people to be offended for me, that rather implies I'm not capable of having my own emotions and sensibilities or understanding the show.

Would it shock you that a boy I teach, who coincidentally is a wheelchair user, does a fantastic impression of Andy Pipkin (the wheelchair user) ? He finds it funny enough to imitate; just because has no use in his legs doesn't mean his brain is addled. He would be outraged if you were offended on his behalf.

Charliebitmyfinger · 13/10/2014 11:57

I spelt it wrong Dirtyalert so here is the definition (I am halfIrish married to an Irishman with Irish child) btw A Pale = wooden post or strip. The Pale was an area west of Dublin a barricade constructed by the Normans to keep the Irish tribes from attacking them. It is a phrase my mother an Irish woman much used as does Dh it is still common parlance in parts of Ireland. Thanks for pointing it out I will stop using it .
