To feel I almost have to apologise for being veggie...

We were invited out tonight with a big group, but I couldn't go due to no babysitter. Anyway DH casually mentions that, well there was nothing on the menu for me anyway. This is following a holiday where being a vegetarian was considered weird, so had to survive on junk food.

These are just a few of my recent experiences. TBH I feel lucky if I go to a restaurant and have two dishes to choose from. Am I being unreasonable to think this is unreasonable?

kiki

So what was the meal plan for your 10-person vegetarian dinner party this weekend?

RufusTheReindeer · 12/10/2014 14:26

Wish there was a vegi restaurant near me, there is a cafe but that's about it Sad

ChippingInLatteLover · 12/10/2014 14:33

Rufus there's nothing near me either and I live between two very big towns - not a single place!

RufusTheReindeer · 12/10/2014 14:37

I live between two cities and near a big town and some quirky little villages

And there's nothing!!!!!

I say nothing the cafe is in one of the cities...but it's a cafe, it would be nice to go somewhere a bit posher on a night out

I have egg and chips at my local pub, it's not on the menu but they always know it's mine Grin

Actually thinking about it I may be there too often Hmm

SuburbanRhonda · 12/10/2014 14:46

Nothing wrong with egg and chips, rufus.

Done properly, it's food of the gods Grin

ChippingInLatteLover · 12/10/2014 14:47

Rufus I don't eat eggs either Grin

MiddleAgeMiddleEngland · 12/10/2014 14:57

I don't eat out often but it really annoys me too. One or two poor choices a lot of the time, and I'm not even a very fussy eater.

However, last summer DD went on a residential trip and because of the slightly unusual nature of it, vegetarian was the assumed choice and anyone wanting meat had to tick a box on the application form. Fantastic to see it the other way round for once Smile

ChippingInLatteLover · 12/10/2014 15:02

middle do you think they'd let me go on it? Sounds great!

toomanykidstoolittletime · 12/10/2014 15:03

I have 2 veggie daughters and there's never anywhere to go that does much on their menu for veggies. It's such a shame because it does spoil a day out trying to think of places to go where they can get something nice to eat.

ChippingInLatteLover · 12/10/2014 15:03

Rufus I also have another health issue and should really be low carbing... you can imagine how easy that is can't you Grin

maninawomansworld · 12/10/2014 15:15

ChippingInLatteLover
Nice attitude you have going there man. If you don't want to cater for your guests, don't invite them - but don't expect them to eat meat because it suits you.

A wild guess but you're veggie? Also, I expect to get flamed on this thread because I am guessing most people on here are veggie - so do your worst folks.

I have no problem with veggies or for catering for veggie guests but there appears to be a total lack of acknowledgement by veggies that you are a tiny minority and a that your dietary preferences are a spectacular pain for your gracious hosts.

ChippingInLatteLover · 12/10/2014 15:22

gracious hosts

Grin

Why do you need a 'wild guess'?

RufusTheReindeer · 12/10/2014 15:29

chipping

I did look at low carbing but thought it would be much to difficult

RufusTheReindeer · 12/10/2014 15:30

Too, obviously, too!!!!

ChippingInLatteLover · 12/10/2014 15:34

Yes too too too difficult to Grin

It's okayyyyyyy at home, but quit labour intensive and a bit boring (especially as I don't enjoy cooking, not one little bit), but eating out is/was a nightmare. However, it's that or take meds :(

SuburbanRhonda · 12/10/2014 15:37

man, there are approximately 400 million vegetarians in the world - about 5.6%.

Hardly a tiny minority.

Btw, you sound about as ungracious as a host could possibly be.

Lagoonablue · 12/10/2014 15:39

Try being a veggie coeliac. There are only so many baked spuds you can tolerate!

PterodactylTeaParty · 12/10/2014 15:41

Okay, everybody: let's all agree to stop turning up at man's house and insisting on being cooked dinner.

EmbarrassedPossessed · 12/10/2014 15:41

Man, are people with allergies, or diseases like Coeliacs (sp?), or people with dietary restrictions due to religious beliefs (Jewish, Muslim etc) also "spectacular pains" for you as well? Not to mention those pesky women who have the temerity to be pregnant!

Perhaps you could drop all friends who aren't allergy free, disease free, male atheist meat eaters. Would make your life easier.

duhgldiuhfdsli · 12/10/2014 15:43

there are approximately 400 million vegetarians in the world - about 5.6%. Hardly a tiny minority.

I'd be willing to bet that in many, if not most restaurants, more that 5.6% of the choices on the menu are vegetarian (by choices I mean distinct dishes, not "small, medium, large" or "with chips or with rice".

A typical set of choices on the fixed price menu in a restaurant will be one two meat, one fish, one veggie. 25% of the menu. For 5.6% of the customers. What more do you want?

SuburbanRhonda · 12/10/2014 15:43

lagoon, I know know much about coeliac disease but if you can eat rice, try rice noodles. You don't even need to cook them, just soak them in boiling water. You can buy flat, wide ones or thin ones like vermicelli. They are cheap as chips if you have an Asian store near you, and fab with a stir-fry.

They are in restaurants. Good luck getting kosher food, with separated dairy and non-dairy kitchens, in many places outside north London. Some restaurants have taken a commercial decision to offer halal food, others haven't, and outside heavily Muslim parts of the country, why would they bother?

Agapanthusbluewhite · 12/10/2014 15:46

Oops sorry wrong quote 'Pombears anyone'
