To feel I almost have to apologise for being veggie...

We were invited out tonight with a big group, but I couldn't go due to no babysitter. Anyway DH casually mentions that, well there was nothing on the menu for me anyway. This is following a holiday where being a vegetarian was considered weird, so had to survive on junk food.

These are just a few of my recent experiences. TBH I feel lucky if I go to a restaurant and have two dishes to choose from. Am I being unreasonable to think this is unreasonable?

Nail on the head, there, rufus.

ChippingInLatteLover · 12/10/2014 13:42

rufus your meal sounds lovely :)

... and on the other thing... I'm thinking single split brain cell...

TheSpottedZebra · 12/10/2014 13:43

Kiki -none of that is true, is it?

RufusTheReindeer · 12/10/2014 13:43

I have never asked a friend to prepare something different for me and I quite often take something along if they are having a curry or something

Defeats the fucking object if I have to do it in a sodding restaurant though!!!!

kikisunflower · 12/10/2014 13:44

My comment was not an anti vegetarian rant at all?!? It was just don't expect others to accommodate your decisions and complain if they don't. That is all.

SuburbanRhonda · 12/10/2014 13:46

zebra, thinking exactly the same.

kiki, why do you keep referring to vegetarians as "you"?

spababe · 12/10/2014 13:47

The thing I am wary of when eating out is checking to see if they have made the veggie dish from the leftover veg from the day before.
Sometimes it is obvious. I don't ask directly just think in my head if they could have done this before I make my decision.

Oops just read the vegetarian bit !!! That's awful !!! I have a group of friends coming over next Saturday 2 of which are vege, which does muck up my meal plan, but no way would I not invite them.

kikisunflower Sun 12-Oct-14 12:19:44
Ps can I also say I have some friends with odd dietary requirements who often bring their own pre cooked food round. I did have a vege friend once who kept banging on about how meat is bad etc so never did invite her back as i did not welcome her overly strong opinions re meat and the way she put her point her across esp infront of DD and DS as it made everyone feel uncomfortable.

SuburbanRhonda · 12/10/2014 13:51

kiki, I'd love to know what you cooked for your completely vegetarian meal for 10 this weekend.

Care to share?

OneStepCloser · 12/10/2014 13:51

Arf, kiki take the shame, you've been caught out..

I had a great meal a few weeks ago and there was four vegetarian options on the menu, not one of them risotto or pasta, almost made me feel quite faint Grin

ChippingInLatteLover · 12/10/2014 13:52

Where was that onestep?

SuburbanRhonda · 12/10/2014 13:54

Great detective work, chipping.

Shame, I really wanted to read the meal plan Sad

kikisunflower · 12/10/2014 13:55

I have a young DD and DS who I cook meat for yes so what? Is that a problem? One of my friends is actually vegan now so yes I do have to change my meal plans, didn't think I had to expand on that at the time but as you ask one texted to say she doesn't eat cheese now.

OneStepCloser · 12/10/2014 13:58

Chipping it was Canterbury, it was really lovely, the chef knew his flavours, Dh had fish and was also blown away.

I do find it odd because a lot of people choose the vege options for many reasons, belief, dietary, preferring organic etc... You do think restuarants would be offering better choices now. Good Indian restuarants are always good for vegetarians I find.

EmbarrassedPossessed · 12/10/2014 13:59

Isn't the point of inviting friends round for dinner, to entertain them? So wouldn't that entail cooking them something that they might like? Even if that means cooking a variety of dishes? Within my friendship group there are a variety of meat eaters, vegetarians (of differing types), people with allergies, a coeliac suffer, and occasionally some pregnant women! Somehow we all manage to have people round without experiencing the kind of rage that man has described...

Being vegetarian is as much of a "whim" as being a meat eater, or a vegan. They are all a choice, and just because one is more common than the other doesn't mean that being a vegetarian is arbitrary decision taken to annoy other people.

ChippingInLatteLover · 12/10/2014 14:03

*One Step - Canterbury. That's a shame! Sounds lovely!

Yes, Indian generally offers a good meal, but I don't always want Indian and a lot of my friends don't like it.

I don't understand why better vegetarian menus aren't offered, I would eat out more and I know a lot of others who would too.

Scarletohello · 12/10/2014 14:05

I'm not a veggie but Turkish/Middle Eastern restaurants have some delicious vegetarian dishes. In fact when I go to our local one I only ever order the veggie mixed mezze as it's so yummy! Stuffed vine leaves, potatoes in spicy tomato sauce, baba ganoush, fresh salad etc.

TheysayIamparanoid · 12/10/2014 14:05

YANBU!!

My local curry house does all the side dishes as a main, officially on the menu now but have been doing that for me for years!

Went to Butlins (half board) a few weeks back and they had amazing veggie options that you could have cooked fresh infront of you!
Its brilliant for the GC of course but the food will be a big reason for going back!

Scarletohello · 12/10/2014 14:07

Also Food for Friends in Brighton does amazing fine dining veggie food these days. A far cry from the lentil bake they did when I was a student there in the 80's!

TheysayIamparanoid · 12/10/2014 14:10

Also, my ex once said to me
'When are you going to stop this vegetarian lark?''
I said
''When are you gona stop this breathing lark?''
Grin

EmbarrassedPossessed · 12/10/2014 14:10

Most restaurants in Brighton have a decent vegetarian choice as there are so many veggies that live there. It is a pleasure though to go to Food for Friends or Terre a Terre and be able to have a choice of the whole menu for a change!

RufusTheReindeer · 12/10/2014 14:11

Used to always go to Cranks in covent garden when we visited london

Ahhh the good old days

Pipbin · 12/10/2014 14:11

I am very lucky to live near here: www.theveggieredlion.co.uk
and here www.vegetarianliving.co.uk/placestogo.php?do=view&article=115

To have a whole menu to chose from is such a treat.
I am of the opinion that I chose to become vegi and therefore it is my problem. But I do get fed up with people confusing being vegi with being healthy. Sunday lunch is the worst. I want the same as the meat eaters but without the meat.

RufusTheReindeer · 12/10/2014 14:14

There is an Indian restaurant in a city near us and it does a whole page of vegi dishes

A WHOLE PAGE PEOPLE!!!!!!! A WHOLE PAGE!!!!!!!

AND I KNOW I'M SHOUTING IT'S A WHOLE FUCKING PAGE

Now that's what I call a choice

Pipbin · 12/10/2014 14:15

There is also a regular village pub near my folks that has a whole separate vegi menu!
