to be expecting a lot of compensation from Thomas Cook

Have came back from Tunisia and my full family, me, do and dd(2.5) have been diagnosed with cryptospridiun. I've had to take 2 weeks off work, hubby at least 2 weeks and dd is off nursery for at least 2 week's. When I called them up to complain they said it will take 25 days for them to get in touch with me. What amount of compensation would you expect. The holiday cost £1,800 (edited by MNHQ), and my loss of earnings is 400, dhs 500 and dds nursery fees are 50.00. Would it be unreasonable to ask for the loss of earnings as compo?

You must have realised when you sent your child to nursery in the first place that she'd occasionally be ill and miss sessions. It's just life IMO. Why do we live in such a compo culture crazy world?!

Iwantmyparcel · 11/10/2014 19:22

I don't know how else you could prove you got it from the hotel it's not found in food or anything like that. Although if someone had it and touched the food after being ill...

Icimoi · 11/10/2014 19:40

MyFairyKing, if OP and her family have suffered this because the hotel has been negligent, why on earth should they just suck it up? If, say, you and yours became so seriously ill as a result of negligence that you suffered life-changing disabilities as a result, would you seriously have said "It's just life?"

gordyslovesheep · 11/10/2014 19:42

what did you insurance company say

RJnomore · 11/10/2014 19:51

About ten years ago DH came back from our holiday in Sicily with cryptosporidium, didn't even occur to us to consider asking for compensation as it didn't spoilt our holiday...

Nor from the sound of it did it spoil yours so on that part of the claim, you are being greedy and grabby.

montymum · 11/10/2014 19:54

I think perhaps you could ask for lose of earnings but not nursery fees as well. You would have been paying these out of your earnings so if you get the earnings covered you could still pay the nursery ( or I could be misding something). I hope you all feel better soob.

RJnomore · 11/10/2014 19:54

Sorry I have reread properly.

No if you can prove it came from your holiday and you have suffered material loss then I think you are perfectly entitled to request that amount in compensation.

Letitsnow9 · 12/10/2014 16:27

Is there a Facebook page for the hotel? Could you post and see if others have come down with it too?

Sallyingforth · 12/10/2014 17:06

What about the insurance, OP?
You did have insurance?

You have to prove as others have said that it was the hotel. So other guests, who were there the same time as you and also any testimonials you can get from the hotel. Otherwise it is your word against theirs that you contracted this in the hotel... You said you diddn't leave the complex but again you need to prove it.
Thomas Cook should be in possession of health and safety records of the hotel and they should include the pool. Simce your complaint I guess they will have carried out a full audit and asked for pool water samples to ensure future guests are not infected..... However I doubt they will part with this info. ( unless in a court of law .....)

Sorry that you have been ill and I hope that you all get well soon.

Just to update. We accepted £500 cash. They said the claim is only valid for my dd and myself as we had medical letters proving how Ill we were dh refused to pay for one.

Don't ask us, ask a solicitor.

That a prime example of pennywise and pound foolish.

Trickydecision · 06/12/2014 08:28

The more fellow sufferers you can assemble the better. As others have said, it will be hard ( and made as hard as possible by Thomas Cook ) to prove beyond doubt that you caught this actually in the hotel.

You may not have left the hotel, and I quite understand why you would not want to, but you could have picked this bug up at the airport. I suspect that is how I caught one when returning from Sharm El Sheik with its filthy loos.

You can google and find specimen letters to use in putting your complaint to T Cook. They also have a Facebook page which you might find useful for finding other oeople with a similar problem.

Good luck.

SeasonsEatings · 06/12/2014 08:34

I wouldn't expect this to be easy as proof it came from the hotel is vital. Did you report sickness in resort?

Are you in contact with other holiday makers? Check Tripadvisor to see if anyone else has reported sickness. Put your own review on that mentions illness but not in a defamatory way that may harm your claim. You may get contacted by other guests that way.

SeasonsEatings · 06/12/2014 08:36

Well done OP!

Trickydecision · 06/12/2014 08:45

Well done OP, sorry for XPost or rather for not seeing the happy outcome before posting.
