to be expecting a lot of compensation from Thomas Cook

Have came back from Tunisia and my full family, me, do and dd(2.5) have been diagnosed with cryptospridiun. I've had to take 2 weeks off work, hubby at least 2 weeks and dd is off nursery for at least 2 week's. When I called them up to complain they said it will take 25 days for them to get in touch with me. What amount of compensation would you expect. The holiday cost £1,800 (edited by MNHQ), and my loss of earnings is 400, dhs 500 and dds nursery fees are 50.00. Would it be unreasonable to ask for the loss of earnings as compo?

we have been to all inclusive Holiday Village type places and not left the resort either - everything is there that you may need. Some holidays we went on had a high incidence of people pooing in the pools and people not putting swim nappies on children so probably lots of contamination. There were threats of culprits being sent home if it didnt stop.

PurpleSwift · 11/10/2014 16:06

It's just a holiday bug isn't it? It's Nasty but it happens. Tbh I'd be complaining to the hotel but I wouldn't be looking for compensation. It's unfortunate.

nomorecrumbs · 11/10/2014 16:48

Hm, I had a stomach bug for 2 months after returning from Egypt. I didn't even think to ask for compo...it's just one of the unfortunate side-effects of travel to unusual climes.

Loveloveloveher · 11/10/2014 17:03

Why would anyone suggest the OP is lying about not leaving the hotel? We've done it before. If you find a lovely all inclusive hotel with plenty of facilities sometimes it's nice to just chill out there.

Optimist1 · 11/10/2014 17:19

The fact is that OP will have to prove that the hotel was at fault. If a significant number of other holidaymakers staying there succumbed to the condition then she's probably in with a chance of compensation, but if not, not.

MyFairyKing · 11/10/2014 17:23

YABU, it's a risk you take when you go all inclusive somewhere like Tunisia.

phantomnamechanger · 11/10/2014 17:24

agree with optimist, unless this is part of a much larger outbreak, very hard to prove source I would think.

charlie0123 · 11/10/2014 17:25

Ugh - me and my son both caught crypto a few years ago. Environmental health thought it would have been our hotel pool too. You have my sincere sympathies op, I was a good 6 weeks before I was right and was hospitalised for 2 days aswell. Your holiday wasn't spoiled though was it - I would say loss of earnings would be reasonable to claim for though. Good luck

Sirzy · 11/10/2014 17:30

I think the key is whether others have reported similar problems. If there is then you will have a case, if you are the only ones who register any problems then it becomes much harder to prove.

Hope you are all better soon.

dimsum123 · 11/10/2014 17:36

Getting ill is par for the course with some destinations. I used to work for a tour operator and we put in the brochure that you would get ill if travelling to eg Egypt so people would know beforehand.

CookieB · 11/10/2014 17:45

I've been to Tunisia and I don't blame you for not leaving the complex. We ventured out on the second day despite being warned by the people who work there and we got pestered to hell. Put me off ever going back tbh.

zobey · 11/10/2014 17:52

All the people we are still in contact with have said that they are the same apart from the childless couple who didn't go in the kids pool...

ilovepowerhoop · 11/10/2014 17:56

there are holiday claims people on the iinternet who seem to claim for these sort of events e.g.

KnackeredMuchly · 11/10/2014 18:10

Ask for their names and room numbers to provide as proof.

As recommended above have a look on the Trip Advisor forums too.

specialsubject · 11/10/2014 18:18

nasty, and get well soon.

But yes, this is a travel insurance matter although it should be reported to the tour operator.
and yes, AI is always risky for this and the kids pool is a particular risk. Doesn't mean it should happen, doesn't mean holiday companies shouldn't monitor it - but the sea and eating out are generally a better bet.

raltheraffe · 11/10/2014 18:47

You should go for loss of enjoyment of holiday, plus loss of earnings, plus compensation for ill health. You can either go via small claims or ABTA arbitration service.

charlie0123 · 11/10/2014 18:51

HOw can it be loss of enjoyment of holiday when they weren't ill til they got back?

handcream · 11/10/2014 18:54

I do wonder about people who literally don't set foot outside a hotel but hey ho, what has really surprised me is people who do this then use the pool as a toilet!!!!

raltheraffe · 11/10/2014 18:55

I would claim for everything I could, including breaches of contract re the hotel.

Iwantmyparcel · 11/10/2014 19:14

It should be easy enough for the hotel to prove/disprove. It can easily be tested for in a lab from samples of the pool water.

Was this done ?

It's a bloody difficult organism to kill cleaning wise.

zobey · 11/10/2014 19:16

I'm only wanting the loss of earnings and nursery fees tbh. As I'm still in probation at work. Hubby is loosing out on a lot of overtime. Dd is missing nursery.

zobey · 11/10/2014 19:19

Iwant the investigation with Thomas Cook is still to take place.

Iwantmyparcel · 11/10/2014 19:21

It might be a bit late now - surely they clean the pool fairly regularly ?!

Sallyingforth · 11/10/2014 19:21

So HAVE you claimed on your holiday insurance?
