To think that having a dog is just a nuisance?

The kids wanted one, as did DH. Got a lovely Cavalier King Charles 6 months ago. He's well trained and very affectionate but I now find him the most annoying burdensome nuisance. Why would i want another dependent? He's lovely when he lies down at night on the sitting room floor but I could have bought a rug for that purpose.

I'd take that any day over my needy, boisterous Jack Russell who wants to play every single minute of every single day. If I don't IMMEDIATELY throw his bastard rope for him to chase, he will growl and bark without stopping for breath until I do. Swap? Grin

DiaDuit · 07/10/2014 16:08

To be fair Dia the OP probably did not realise just how much time dogs need and the volume of mess they can create.

Research would have helped with that. Pretty basic research actually. Like asking people who owned dogs for starters.

ouchLegohurts · 07/10/2014 16:10

Well we're just about to get him neutered. We've only had him a few months and the vet advised us to wait until he was 6 months. He's past that now and booked in for next week...we were always going to get him neutered. He's not an annoying dog, he's a very good one but I find it annoying to have another dependent...the kids and DH love him and I guess I like him but I still find dog owning annoying!

DiaDuit · 07/10/2014 16:12

So there's no actual problem other than you didnt really want a dog but got one anyway?

ouchLegohurts · 07/10/2014 16:12

I owned dogs before DiaDuit but just before my kids came. I find it different with kids...the door opening and closing a zillion times a day and having to chase him back and pick up poo from the neighbours garden...one day with a kettle of boiling water because it was soooo messy, aaaaargh!

ouchLegohurts · 07/10/2014 16:13

Yep but it's no biggie, just having a rant! I've just washed him and in fairness he's very cute now..asleep...

Not so much the nuisance that has put me off.

It's carrying a bag of poo around waiting for the next bin. When I see someone with a nugget bag swinging from a tie on their back pack happily bashing them on the thigh every stride. I know I will never be a dog owner.

ouchLegohurts · 07/10/2014 16:14

Ha Cherrybombxo, sounds like a charmer Wink

Stairgates, rules for everyone about checking where the dog is before opening doors, teach a good recall.

Dead dog is a bit messier to clean up than runny poo. Please make sure he cant bolt outside any more.

raltheraffe · 07/10/2014 16:17

Who says the OP did not do any research?

There are lots of unexpected things when getting a dog. I could not have predicted just how many dog hairs Benji would leave all over the place. He is only a tiny dog but moults more than the Dobermann I once had.
I could not have predicted Shauny had a brain tumour. MDH did not realise and her last owners never took her to the vets, so it was only diagnosed when we got her and now we have costly vets bills, but she is worth it. Also all her teeth fell out due to a jaw defect and then she lost an eye. However she was still crowned RSPCA rescue dog of the year!
I absolutely love my dogs and am currently searching for a third rescue to join our family.

Hilarious Butterpuff!

OP's posts indicated he hadnt done enough research- or any basic research really tbh. As i said, knowing the benefits and drawbacks of neutering would be pretty basic before getting dog- as would finding out what life with dogs (and children if you have them) is like. We arent talking undiagnosed illnesses or behaviours here. This is a healthy, well behaved dog. No surprises there.

silverten · 07/10/2014 16:22

I'm with you OP.

Like a permanent toddler, with the added bonus of sharper teeth.

Kendodd · 07/10/2014 16:22

My dog's a nuisance.

She barks in the night
Doesn't come when she's called
Chews the children's toys
Drags her bum along the carpet
Digs holes in the lawn
Steals our biscuits
Knocks plants off the window ledge

She's 12 and we've had her since she was 8 weeks old, we all love her Smile

ouchLegohurts · 07/10/2014 16:23

And no nappy

Couldnt you train her ken?

Canyouforgiveher · 07/10/2014 16:24

Can't say I really disagree OP. I love our dog. I think getting a dog was one of the best things we could have done for our family. I can't imagine life with out him ... well actually I can and it would be much easier. Having a dog is a huge responsibility - holidays, days out, working were all affected by it. I knew this going in but it doesn't change that it is a lot of work.

I generally tell people not to get a dog. I reckon if they want one enough they'll ignore me but they might as well hear how much of a commitment it is.

ouchLegohurts · 07/10/2014 16:24

Yeah Kendodd you see I think some people just don't mind that stuff but it drives me cracked!

TeenageMutantNinjaTurtle · 07/10/2014 16:25

I used to be a real dog person, nearly split up with DH when we first started dating because he made a comment about not really liking dogs.

Then i had children and then I looked after my mum's dogs for two weeks and I can honestly say there is no way on God's green earth I would get a dog (or any pet) now. I have enough people to keep clean, provide food for and teach good manners (dh included).

I will get a dog when I'm retired, the children have moved out and dh has run off with the au pair.

ouchLegohurts · 07/10/2014 16:26

Off to walk the little shit darling now, byeeeee!

VeryStressedMum · 07/10/2014 16:28

I love my old dog she's my 4th child and the best dog I could ever have wished for but bloody hell she's annoying sometimes.

raltheraffe · 07/10/2014 16:28

Yes this dog does need neutering urgently. Not neutering a dog is quite cruel really. Imagine being that dog, having sexual urges and never being in a position to do anything about it. Must be very frustrating.
Also neutering can decrease the risk of certain cancers.

TrevaronGirl · 07/10/2014 16:29

I grew up with all sorts of animals - including dogs - around the place (farmer's daughter) but never really 'took' to dogs at all.

I think bells is correct, one has to be a 'doggy' sort to like accept them.

ChristinaYang · 07/10/2014 16:33

"Off to walk the little shit darling now, byeeeee!"

lol - you had me in proper giggles there!

I'm not a "dog person" at all, but my husband is adamant that we're getting a dog in the future. I really don't want one and refuse to discuss it with him but I can see him landing home with one some day Angry
