I am 30weeks pregnant with a massive bump and extremely uncomfortable.
I travel by train two days a week to get into work and I can't remember the last time I got my allocated 'half' of a double seat (ie full capacity of my actual seat). Appreciate that sounds petty but it's hard to be rational when you spend four hours a week precariously balanced on the edge of your seat (always seem to end up with the aisle seat - probs because of where/when I get on the train) feeling like I'm gonna fall off.
I hate to stereotype but I've got to say every single person who has pushed me into this position has been male. Only one of them has been of a bigger build which I can't resent, he was basically taking up the space he needed. I'm talking about space hoggers of perfectly average size who purposely 'take up' the maximum space they can.
Rant over!

I feel your rage OP

I hated the journey to work on the train. I always found the biggest arseholes were middle aged men dressed in expensive suits.

YANBU, I once smacked a guy in the knee with my laptop because he sat down and spread just as I was sitting down too. Made me stumble and the side caught his knee, it wasn't in a laptop bag just a regular one. Thankfully tiny laptop was fine but he was in a bit of pain.

Glad the laptop got there before my arse ended up on his knee!

You should have said 'your trousers leave little to the imagination. It's not that big, doesn't need much space, so close your legs.'

I hate this too. When I was recently pregnant it was extra bad but ordinarily I have quite a bad back so if sitting I have to sit straight on the seat or it makes it worse.

I usually do call leg spreaders, or just general spreaders who think they can take up extra room, on their rudeness. Often that gets the desired result. The other thing I have tried is wedging a newspaper or book between the seats - if you can't do it they are taking too much room. It's worth having a go just to make your point! If their is an arm rest always say you are going to put it down now.

I also second the sitting down heavily aiming for the full seat manoeuvre - it generally makes them move!
