the acronyms used on these threads as words in my head when I read? (ie AIBU=ayboo, YANBU=yanboo, YABU=yaboo). and IRL I keep wanting to say these as actual words in conversations!

It took me ages to work out what AIBU meant when I joined Smile

steff13 · 06/10/2014 03:33

It never occurred to me to do that, but we have a specialized computer system at work, and we do that for a lot of the screen names.

I'm still not sure what SEN means, even though I see it on here all the time, and it took me a long time to figure out OTT.

Writerwannabe83 · 06/10/2014 05:01

On many occasions whilst writing a text message I have accidentally referred to my baby as DS Grin

SEN - special educational needs? That was always my guess anyway Grin

Took me ages to work out what NC was and I bet there are plenty out there that I have no clue about Smile

CheerfulYank · 06/10/2014 05:16

I do it all the time! Also dee aitch and dee ess.

PotatoPolly · 06/10/2014 05:35

Haha I do the dee aitch and dee dee etc! & often go to refer to my husband as my dh and baby as ds Grin

SweetTeaVodka · 06/10/2014 05:52

Me and my "dee aitch" both do this (he's a mumsnetter too) :)

Optimist1 · 06/10/2014 06:11

While we're on the subject of pronouncing things, Minerves, I'm having difficulty with your user name. Is it to be said in a French accent, suggesting a wise, willowy, inspirational type? Or the more prosaic "My Nerves!"? Smile

MyNameIsSuz · 06/10/2014 07:23

Ahh finally, I've always wondered if other people do this! I also read yanboo, dee aitch etc. My mind even has a go at the more impossible ones - 'eye-swim' for iyswim 'ick-wime' for ikwym.

Stupidhead · 06/10/2014 07:28

'Rolf' for ROFL.

pluCaChange · 06/10/2014 08:06

I've heard "ROFL" turned into a verb: "I'm roffling". It was on the radio, so it was probably done for comic effect, but it worked quite well, and not just thanks to the lovely Marcus Brigstocke.

Charitybelle · 06/10/2014 08:12

I don't do this but i have found myself in real life saying 'it's not unreasonable' or 'am I being unreasonable' a lot! The vocab has obvs sunk into my psyche!
Still don't know what HTH means???

Stupidhead · 06/10/2014 08:15

Happy To Help, charity!

The second!

I also say dee dee, dee ess etc.

Yanboo, obviously, OhPea.

Writerwannabe83 · 06/10/2014 13:45

I thought HTH was 'Hope that helps' Grin

Stupidhead · 06/10/2014 15:11

It might! I'm usually wrong Smile

pigsDOfly · 06/10/2014 16:41

Been on here some time now and have managed to work out what most things mean but HTH has always puzzled me; thought it was some sort of insult as it's often written at the bottom slightly sarcastic posts.

Thanks for enlightening me.

CaptainAnkles · 06/10/2014 16:44

I always pronounce it yanboo in my head too Grin I've also addressed my son as 'DS' before Blush

NanaNina · 06/10/2014 17:09

Have any of you ever been on the TTC (trying to conceive) threads. I am certainly not in that category as a grandmother aged 70! but my friend's daughter is TTC and she's not on the internet so I took a look at one of the threads to see if I could pick anything up...............OMG the acronyms are utterly baffling - POA (peeing on a stick) DPO (days past ovulation) but so many more that I just gave up. I have to admit that both my children were "unplanned" or to be more blunt "mistakes" but I am SO glad that I never had to go through a similar tortuous process that these poor women.

NanaNina · 06/10/2014 17:09

Sorry my last sentence doesn't make sense but I think you know what I mean.

Charitybelle · 06/10/2014 17:33

Aaaaah.....
Thanks Stupidhead

HeartsTrumpDiamonds · 06/10/2014 17:38

My very, very favourite acronym ever is TSSDNCOP. MNHQ use it from time to time. There is even a user with that as her name. Very cool.

Stands for The Secret Service Does Not Comment On Procedure. It's from The West Wing (TV)

I also think "TLDR" a lot but would never actually say so on a thread. (Too Long; Didn't Read)

Neither are particularly unique to MN though.

LemonadeRayGun · 06/10/2014 20:04

Ok while we are on the subject, what is PFB? I think I might know but I don't want to say in case I am wrong and look silly :D

ErrolTheDragon · 06/10/2014 20:11

You do all know that there's an acronyms page - link at the top of the Talk page, don't know what it's like on mobile devices so here you go.

HTH Grin

and yes, I sometimes think of DD as 'deedee'.

LemonadeRayGun · 06/10/2014 20:26

I did not know there was an acronyms page! Incredibly useful thank you! Have bookmarked it :D
