To think that jury service selection isn't random at all

Teddybeau1988 · 03/10/2014 11:15

I have just received a letter summoning me for jury service. I'm really looking forward to it. They will cover wages and travel, and also feed you for the days your there. I spent three weeks on a trial a few years ago and found it really interesting.

A few of the other jurors had been picked before. Has anyone else been picked multiple times?

Unfortunately it is random.

Because I had 6 months off recently and did a quick search to see if I could get selected. And you can't.

Middleagedmotheroftwo · 03/10/2014 11:17

I have never been selected, but I'd love to do it.

WaroftheRoses · 03/10/2014 11:18

I don't know anyone who has been selected.

WorraLiberty · 03/10/2014 11:18

It's totally random.

DH has been picked and starts next week. He's never been picked before.

My Mum was picked twice.

Some people win the lottery twice. I suppose it's law of averages or something.

Teddybeau1988 · 03/10/2014 11:19

I know you can't pick to volunteer, as it would attract certain types of people. I'm just wondering of they pick from a smaller pool of names

I have never been picked. It might be a bit of a pita finding childcare, but I wouldn't mind doing it now that dd has started school.

It seem a pity that there can't be a database of people who wouldn't mind being picked.

Rissolesfortea · 03/10/2014 11:19

My DH has been called three times, I never have.

cozietoesie · 03/10/2014 11:19

Done it twice and have just been notified that I've to do it for a third time - but all different locations so I think it must be random.

BadabingBadaboom · 03/10/2014 11:20

I have unfortunately. It was a horrible case. We were all offered and all took counselling.

BoredPanda · 03/10/2014 11:20

I've been selected twice. The first time, I almost enjoyed it as it was just so interesting, but the second time was horrible, really, really horrible. It still makes me sick thinking about it.

Stupidhead · 03/10/2014 11:20

I was selected but was either pregnant or breastfeeding (I can't remember) so wrote and told them. Less than a year later I was picked again and did it.

BadabingBadaboom · 03/10/2014 11:22

Sorry should have said the second case*

shouldnthavesaid · 03/10/2014 11:23

I've never been selected. I think I'd be a bad juror though, I'm agorophobic and would spend the whole trial working out how long it would take me to run to the door and get safely home again!

ilovesooty · 03/10/2014 11:23

I've never been picked and would love to do it. My ex got picked and didn't want to do it. I kn ow someone who has been selected three times.

UncleSue · 03/10/2014 11:24

I have never been picked, always thought I would quite like to, although seeing boredpandas post makes me think it wouldn't necessarily be a fun thing to do.

WeeClype · 03/10/2014 11:24

I was selected once, turned up at court and sat around for ages to be told to go home and report back the next day.

As I was on a zero hour contract I couldn't claim for two days lost wages Angry

PixieofCatan · 03/10/2014 11:24

It's entirely random. My Mum was called three times in the ten years or so she was a childminder, and got out of it three times. Never outside of those years though oddly enough. I've been called once last year and got out of it thankfully.

I don't know if amounts are local or not but I'd have only got £50 a day 'compensation' which would have left me seriously out of pocket and probably homeless had a trial gone on for more than 2 weeks.

I would love to do it out of interest though and if I got called again a few years from now, when I'm not the primary earner and not a nanny (and therefore somebody elses childcare) I think I'd find it really interesting.

ebwy · 03/10/2014 11:24

I'm hoping to be exempt due to mental illness (my agoraphobia wouldn't be able to take getting there!) or never get selected.

my brother was selected while still doing his a-levels

ConkerTime · 03/10/2014 11:25

I've been asked 3 times but have had caring responsibilities and been excused.

maras2 · 03/10/2014 11:25

DH and I are in our 60's and have never been asked to do Jury Service. We've both been on the electoral roll for 40 plus years Confused.

Nancy66 · 03/10/2014 11:26

I've done it twice, got called a third time recently but managed to get out of it.

It's bad news when you're self employed

scurryfunge · 03/10/2014 11:26

Both DH and I have been selected but didn't do it. My mother did jury service for 2 week trial. She thought it was hard work but did enjoy it.

ScrambledeggLDCcakeBOAK · 03/10/2014 11:26

Iv have the letter three times but have never actually been chosen.

KneeQuestion · 03/10/2014 11:27

I haven't ever been selected. I dread being picked as it would be a logistical nightmare due to caring commitments.

My Dad has, he defered once, then did it a few monts/a year? later.

Would be awful to end up on a trial that lasted months.

DancingBabyGroot · 03/10/2014 11:27

I've been asked once and I replied stating I couldn't due to mental health reasons. That was 14 years ago and I've never been asked since.
